Good to read that in full.

Love his sense of humor - an the total lack of it by the 'Idiots in Charge'... people like that are always dangerous once they they are allowed to get the bit between their teeth.

They just don't get it. They didn't then and they don't now.

Has no one asked to see Seeger's birth certificate?

Thanks for this link. Great stuff!

Something I once heard played on the radio, and would love to hear again, was a recording of Pete's address to HUAC, where he told them "Shame on you!" and told them off (in a civilized way) but with such incredible power and forcefulness and - most of all - integrity, that it made shivers run down my spine.

If anyone knows where I might find it, I'd really appreciate it - I would love to hear it again, and play it for friends...

I couldn't tell you where to find the recording but an account of Pete's appearance before HUAC, and how he invoked the first amendment rather than the fifth, is in David Dunaway's excellent biog of Pete seeger; How Can I Keep From Singing?

How indeed.

When that interview took place, I was one day short of being seven months old.

When I was in my twenties, every Fourth of July, I went with my mother, a staunch Republican, to hear Pete Seeger sing with the American Wind Symphony.

Fascinating - I would like to see a transcipt of Paul Robeson's "trial" also.
I understand at this time the movie stars were being monitored and reported to this committee by a one "B" Movie actor - Ronald Reagan.
I said fascinating - but it is also very deressing how the US society was tearing itself apart

Thank you so much for posting that, I shall reccomend it to everyone I know. It's importand we read about how infected by madness politicians can become. Especially in these times when people are again being asked to justify their beliefs, opinions and individual prejudices. Just how UN american were that committee! Pete is the greatest American ever

I always thought the title - House UN-American Committee was very ironic...

The transcript of Paul Robeson's testimony can be found in Eric Bentley's THIRTY YEARS OF TREASON, Pete's appearance is in there also. MY favorite was Zero Mostel. When they asked him his name he said "Sam Mostel". They then inquired if he was also known as Zero, and if so, why? He said it was in honor of his financial standing in the community. They asked who he worked for? "19th Century Fox." "Would you care to amend that?" "Yes, make that 18th Century Fox!"

In every way but actual words he comes up with the same result as Woody Allen's The Front - "go fuck yourselves." :)

I had the inspirational pleasure of meeting and talking with Pete a few years ago in San Francisco. I totally agree that Pete is one of the greatest people (worldwide) in our time. When I think of the trouble that he has endured because he insists on helping people recognize and celebrate common humanity, I am reminded of W B Yeats's poem "The Curse of Cromwell." Text follows:

You ask what I have found and far and wide I go,
Nothing but Cromwell's house and Cromwell's murderous crew,
The lovers and dancers are beaten into the clay,
And the tall men and the swordsmen and the horsemen where are they?
And there is an old beggar wandering in his pride
His fathers served their fathers before Christ was crucified.
O what of that, o what of that / What is there left to say?

All neighborly content and easy talk are gone,
But there's no good complaining, for money's rant is on,
He that's mounting up must on his neighbor mount
And we and all the Muses are things of no account.
They have schooling of their own but I pass their schooling by,
What can they know that we know that know the time to die?
O what of that, O what of that / What is there left to say?

But there's another knowledge that my heart destroys
As the fox in the old fable destroyed the Spartan boy's
Because it proves that things both can and cannot be;
That the swordsmen and the ladies can still keep company;
Can pay the poet for a verse and hear the fiddle sound,
That I am still their servant though all are underground.
O what of that, O what of that / What is there left to say?

I came on a great house in the middle of the night
Its open lighted doorway and its windows all alight,
And all my friends were there and made me welcome too;
But I woke in an old ruin that the winds howled through;
And when I pay attention I must out and walk
Among the dogs and horses that understand my talk.
O what of that, O what of that / What is there left to say?
