Tech: Processor Speeds?

Just wondering if anyone can answer this for me.

I am getting a gaming computer shortly for Danny (previous thread) but the game that caused our problem in the first place and prompted all this, lists all the requirements it needs and tells you what your computer has and ticks the ones that are ok.

The thing we "failed" on (it says) was the CPU's frequency which it listed as

"Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4CPU 3.00GHz (1 CPU, 2992 MHz"

and it then says upgrade. "CPU's frequency Minimum: 1.9GHz"

Now I don't know anything about processors and this may be quite stupid BUT, when I look at the above, it seems to me that my Intel Pentium says 3.00GHz surely that has to be MORE than 1.9GHz that is the minimum requirement. Help!

It depends what the processor does with each cycle.

Here is a list of processors and their performance http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php

A Pentium 4 3GHz (an aged processor) is rated at 491, a modern top of the range processor (i7 3GHz) over 10,000 - 20 times the performance. The most lowly Intel Atom processot you could buy would be at least twice the performance of a P4 3GHz.

Any new computer you purchase will have a processor that out performs the specification required by the game.

Your ISP cannot provide the speeds.

Allow the lad to wait 18 months and THEN look to the new Intel 3D

In the in between time - save 300 a month to purchase the new system....he will become the fastest gamer on the block.

for the next 18 months.

(On the other hand - purchase him a musical instrument - and let him be frustrated - BUT HAPPY - for the rest of his life.)

Thanks for the explanation folks.

Gargoyle, he has had a couple of guitars since he was 5yrs old and has just passed his grade one piano exam, and is doing his grade two for the tenor horn, so he has the music in him, gaming is, I am glad to say a secondary interest.
