It looks like the link was to the old website of the Wareham Whalers, which is now located here: http://www.wareham-whalers.org.uk/index.htm They have song lyrics on the site, but none seem to correspond to the chorus above. I suspect that the "precisionproductions.com" link from the old thread was probably a link to the "2009 Festival Song Book" that these folks are selling: http://www.falmouthshout.com |

Anchors weighed and sails unfurled, Heave away boys, haul away boys, Haul on the halyard, stamp and go. I never thought I'd see the day We'd sail away from Botany Bay; Heave away boys, haul away boys, Haul on the halyard, stamp and go. Blow today and blow tomorrow: Blow away all care and sorrow: Transport out and timber home: Across the wide and raging foam: With a fist full of tin, we'll leave the dock: You Plymouth girls we soon will rock: One more haul and that'll do: For we're the bullies to kick her through: Don't you weep you Sidney girls: Anchors weighed and sails unfurled: Written by Graham Moore and now sung by The Shanty Annas |

22 May 11 - 10:36 PM (#3158950) Subject: RE: Lyr Req-Shanty: Haul on the Halyard Stamp and Go From: Bob Bolton G'day fi(ona)_in_nz, My first reaction was that this had to be 'revival' composition ... and I see that it is the work of Graham Moore. I'n sure that real sailors know where they are bound ... and especially where the dock actually is. Nobody really sailed off "bound for" Botany Bay" after the First Fleet, in 1788. Captain Phillip took a good hard look at Botany Bay ... and sent his officers off to look for a decent harbour ... and they pretty quickly came back and said the next harbour north was great ... and could hold all the navies in the world! The destination "Botany Bay" may well have been written on convict sentence details ... and even shipping schedules, for some time ... but they all actually landed in Sydney Cove. I think the persistence of the error can be blamed on singers ... initially the ones flogging penny broadsides on the streets of London / Liverpool / Dublin / wherever ... and then (a century later) on Mayhew's production of Little Jack Shepherd with its version of Farewell to Ye Judges & Juries re-jigged as a 'music hall' song Botany Bay. Admittedly, in these days of massive container ships ... and the necessity of quick transfer to mass transport ... Botany Bay is one of our major container shipping docks ... but it spent most of the 19th century being heavily guarded against a possible 'back door' invasion by the Russians! Regard(les)s, Bob |

12 Apr 22 - 01:44 PM (#4138881) Subject: RE: Lyr Req-Shanty: Haul on the Halyard Stamp and Go From: radriano The lyrics Mrs Duck posted are good, exept for one line: "Anchors weighed and sails unfurled" should read "Anchor weighed and her sails unfurled." Here are the lyrics I use: STAMP & GO Written by Graham Moore Don’t you weep, you Sidney girls Chorus: Heave away, boys, let her go Anchor weighed and her sails unfurled Chorus: Heave away, boys, haul away boys Chorus: Haul on the halyard, stamp and go Full chorus: I never thought I’d see the day We’d sail away from Botany Bay Heave away, boys, haul away, boys Haul on the halyard, stamp and go Shake her out and let her sail Blow, ye winds, a pleasant gale All blow today, all blow tomorrow All blow away our sins and sorrow Drive her on through the Old Bass Strait On the open sea we’ll meet our fate Greener fields we soon will find And leave these hellish lands behind Transport out and timber home Across the wide and raging foam With a fist full of tin, we’ll leave the dock You Plymouth girls we soon will rock One more haul and that’ll do For we’re the bullies for to kick her through |

14 Apr 22 - 08:58 PM (#4139121) Subject: RE: ADD Shanty: Haul on the Halyard Stamp and Go From: GUEST,radriano I sent an email to Graham Moore asking for the correct lyrics but have not heard back from him yet. It occurred to me that although this is presented as a halyard shanty the structure of the song is more like a capstan shanty, what with the grand chorus. |
22 Apr 22 - 08:49 PM (#4139933) Subject: RE: ADD Shanty: Haul on the Halyard Stamp and Go From: radriano I communicated with Graham Moore via email. Graham Moore wrote ‘Stamp and Go’ for his folk musical “The Last of England,” telling the second part of the story of the Tolpuddle Martyrs who were transported to Botany Bay in 1834. |
