Kendall's new country song

09 Jun 11 - 11:44 AM (#3167707)
Subject: A new country song
From: kendall

Opinions please

I've been sitting here living in the past and this thought came into my head

If you walk up to a juke box and slip a nickle in,
You can bet your bottom dollar that disc aint gonna spin,
'Cause the cost of country music keeps risin' all the time,
This new country music has become a real gold mine.

chorus

Hillbilly fever's going down,
Good old country music can't be found,\
This crap they now call country
Don't do a thing for me,
Let's bring back country music
To the land of liberty.

I used to listen to the Oprey
And be singing right along,
With Wilma, Roy and Grampa
I knew every song,
Now this racket they call country
Makes me miss them good old days,
I'm just an old time picker
And I just can't change my ways.

repeat chorus

When I get up to Heaven,
When my time is done down here
There will be real country music,
Of that I have no fear,
I'll pick with all my favorites
And make a joyful sound
Hillbilly fever will be spreadin' all around.

I was thinking that the original tune for "Hillbilly Fever's going around"would work best.

I think the original was called Hillbilly Fever.

You can hear the original on Utube by Stringbean (David Akeman)

Works for me, Cap'n;
I'm hard put to figure out what a lot of the half-baked rock on the market has to do with country music; I'm at a total loss to figure out what "Big and Rich" have to do with country music.

Fine job Kendall! Somehow I was reminded of George Jones and Randy Travis singing this one on special awhile back:

George and Randy in 1991

A FEW OLD COUNTRY BOYS

Not too many years ago
When dreams were coming true
I'd reach for inspiration
Sometimes it would be you
I'd hear you on the radio
I sure did like your sound
Say it's good to know there's still
A few ol' country boys around

From the smoke it's hard to tell
What's coming down the line
We heard you were a fast train
Coming out of Caroline
We wondered what you were haulin'
When you rolled into to town
Say it's good to know there's still
A few ol' country boys around

You must have felt that same old feeling
More than once or twice
Guitars pressed against our hearts
Under the neon lights
I've got to say that feeling is the best that I have found
Lord it's good to know there's still
A few ol' country boys around

There's a lot of truth you know
In our kind of songs
About the life you're living
And how love's done you wrong
As long as there's a jukebox
And a honky tonk in town
It's good to know there's still
A few ol' country boys around
It's good to know there's still
A few ol' country boys around

Kendall your lyrics certainly align with my sentiment! When Rose, the record lady, had an active site she refused to put up anything newer than the 70's. Since then it has been mostly crap except for this:

You are all as bad as the old codgers on the Steel Guitar Forum!
There are plenty of good modern country songs- it's just that you are only hearing the rubbish ones!
Only last night I was listening to AKUS (Alison Krauss and Union Station), Nickelcreek, and a brilliant young mando player called Sierra Hull. That was on the BBC in the UK. We do a couple of superbly written songs by Suzy Bogguss in the band.
What I am saying is that you should not forget the good old stuff, but that the good new country songs are way better melodically, lyrically and harmonically than anything ever done in the 'classic' days.
Cheers
Dave

Name one good one.
All I hear in modern country is a lot of pounding and screaming, just like Raucous and roll.Rock and roll with a steel guitar is not country.

Hey Kendall, my festival pal Donnie Dobro Scott, who lives in Mt. Airy, NC and has been playing trad bluegrass and country with some of the best as long as you and I have, had this to say:

"Hey Chance That's a real good song. Only problem I don't think there are any coin juke boxes (left). May wish to research that as I seldom am in places that have jukeboxes.
Donnie"

That's part of the problem of course, but, as a point of information, they still have a quarter Jukeboxes in the booths in the Tastee Diner in Bethesda, MD. Of course, they've still got Hank Williams and Hank Snow on the Jukebox.

Personally I like the song. Thanks for sharing the lyrics, and I hope to hear you sing it in October.

For the discussion above: I lost interest in the commercial country stations just as I lost interest in the commercial pop and rock stations. A few artists mine the more traditional roots of country music. George Strait, Randy Travis, and Dwight Yokum come to mind, but the pickings are slim. Willie Nelson is still out there.

The gentleman above suggested "Alison Krauss and Union Station), Nickelcreek, and a brilliant young mando player called Sierra Hull". They are what is called Newgrass or Pop Bluegrass here in North Carolina, and have little to do with Country Music, apart from some trickling over; they're talented and sometime cover trad music, and add some life to the genre, but they aren't Country.

All this to say, good song, Kendall.

I'm waiting for Lady Gaga to record Walking After Midnight. I'm going to download it on my Droid smart phone.

Nice one, Kendall.

Spaw, I really enjoyed the link, too!

Fortunato, I echo your thoughts about "Alison Krauss and Union Station), Nickelcreek, and a brilliant young mando player called Sierra Hull".

If memory serves, Chris LeDoux had some excellent, genuine Country-Western, from his early days in the 70s and on and I *think* his son and his band try to continue that, though I couldn't swear to it. I've also heard a few kids of some of the oldies who sound pretty good, too.

I enjoy a lot of the older stuff. Morgan - the grandson, and I had a blast listening to Hoyt Axton, today, esp. Boney Fingers and the one about Della and the Dealer and a dog named Jake and a cat called Kalamazoo.

My sentiments, exactly about country music - at least what is played on commercial radio and TV. I am willing to concede that there probably is still some good stuff being written and performed, but it probably is 'under the radar' and not heard nowadays unless you know where to look. Great song, Kendall!

Kendall, I think your lyrics are good, and certainly express one point of view. I think there's good stuff out there, though, but I DO think country is sliding more and more into pop. When it comes right down to it, I think the main differences are instrumentation, arrangement, and 'twang'.

Ya know, Kendall, I hear your complaint from a lot of people who share your opinion -- even "younger" people...in their 40s.

Country IS getting to be more pop-ish all the time, I think because of the music sales industry and the way radio stations are organized -- they want to draw the broadest base possible, even if it means "selling out"...(hmmm, "selling out" to sell out product). But I've also heard that some performers stay true to the genre.

Whatever sells is what we get to hear.

Remember what H.L. Mencken said, "No one ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public."

Someone else said "As long as we have Hot New Country, '70s rock will never die."

And Tom Russell said

"Don't call me no Country singer, those are poison words to me,
'Cause I ain't heard a good Country song since 1973."

(The Death of Jimmy Martin)

I think everyone agrees except record company execs and radio program managers. And the record companies are heading for broke fairly quickly.

Kendall,

I got a kick out of your song, even though my main exposure to older country music was at a Wyoming dude ranch in the early 1970's. I don't know where the lines get drawn these days, since I listen to music that identifies itself as "folk" & that's it's OWN can-o-worms. I can almost always tell the difference between a bluegrass and an old-timey musician, however; attitude as well as taste in songs makes that divide.

What I read as your frustration with how commercial and "cross-over pop" the mainstream called "country music" is, seems to tap a vein that goes back decades. Are you familiar with a band from Bloomington, Indiana back in the 80s called Ecclectricity ? They did a devastatingly witty dismissal of then contemporary country music called "Back to Beethoven" that used well known bits of classical music as the breaks between verses.

The chourus ran something like:

Country Music gives me heartburn
Charley Daniels turns my spleen (a different performer inserted each chorus)
And Crystal Gale makes my face pale
As any satin sheets you've seen.
I'm tired of singing about cheaters
Margaritas and driving trucks
I'm going back to Beethoven
cause country music sucks

I don't think the band exists anymore, and anything left would likely be on cassette or vinyl. Going through old posts, Charlie Noble seems to own the album & I've got the sheet music around somewhere. If yer at all interested, I can try digging it up before Old Songs.

I think a lot of it comes from instrumentation. I like acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin, Bass and Dobro for the pure sound of each.

I can not abide electric instruments, especially when they are cranked up to the threshold of pain, and drums belong in marching bands, and classical orchestras.

Call me fussy; I call me eclectic.

Here's a real country song.

erse 1

E                                                A                      E
I remember way back when I was just a boy, going places with my mom and dad
                                                          B
It used to scare me to death, how mama used to act after six or seven beers she'd have.
          E                                                      A                     E
We were sittin' at a table, when mama got disabled with all the liquor runnin' to her head.
                                                          B                         E
Soon I got to choking', cause daddy wasn't joking', when he grabbed me by the arm and said

Chorus

NO                Chord                  A                   E
Don't look now, mamas got her boobs out showing everybody in town.
                                                             B
My face was turning red, I was wishin' I was dead, there were people standing all around.
    A                      E                         A                            E
When mama gets to drinkin', there ain't much thinkin', there's nothing anybody can do.
          A                  E                        B                      E
You just hope and pray, there never comes a day when mamas out drinkin' with you.

Verse 2

                                                               A                   E
Well we got her in the truck, and we started driving home, when mama said she had to go.
                                                             B
Daddy pulled it over we were standin' on the shoulder, while ma was puttin' on a show.
         E                                           A                     E
Daddy fired up the truck, and mama stood up with her pants down around her knees.
                                                                     B                      E
That's when I heard mama holler, if you give me a dollar, than I'll let you take a peak at these.

Chorus

NO                Chord                A                   E
Don't look now, mamas got her boobs out showing everybody in town.
                                                               B
My face was turning red, I was wishin' I was dead, there were people standing all around.
      A                      E                                  A                E
When mama gets to drinkin', there ain't much thinkin', there's nothing anybody can do.
          A                   E                      B                      E
You just hope and pray, there never comes a day when mamas out drinkin' with you.
          A                   E                         B                      E
You just hope and pray, there never comes a day when my mamas out drinkin' with you.

How can that be a real country song? Now if Mom's brother had shown up and fucked her, now THAT would be a country song.

Or......if a passing 18-wheeler had picked up Mom and she was never seen again although they heard about her sleeper exploits for years afterward, THAT would be a country song.

OR......if Dad had pulled over on a railroad crossing while Mom was needing a piss and a train came along and killed them all, THAT would be a country song.

As it is, not so much.............................

Yuck, that's not what I'd call good country, at all.

And, the no good music since 1973 completely leaves out the stuff we were playing at KVOC AM Country Radio in Casper, WY by Chris LeDoux, Don Edwards, and a slew of others. ALL great country and western.

Some examples: Rose-Colored Glasses. Not by the original artist that I remember, but check out that 70s suit!

This one was played a lot in the late 70s/early 80s. Here it is done by EmmyLou: Save The Last Waltz for Me.

And, Don Edwards sings old and new, but wasn't really well known until the 80s: Desert Night.

And, maybe because I met him when he was first starting out, bringing his albums to the radio stations, himself, I'd challenge anyone to claim Chris LeDoux isn't GOOD country-western. Caution, there is a song playing automatically at that link, BUT there is a control bar at the bottom of your screen. BTW, I do prefer his earlier albums which were more acoustic, but he still wrote and sang damn good country songs, imo! Remember Five Dollar Fine for Whining?
