BS: Much Ado About Nothing...

"The Weiner"
Sarah Palin's email
Paris Hilton
Katy Perry

Meanwhile, there's Yemen, Syria, Arizona is on fire, another earthquake in New Zealand, water is running desparately short, and the world is in an economic mess that will likely get a lot worse before it gets worse, still. G-d bless the media for keeping our attention properly focused. I'm just saying...

You forgot the worst one... cesium and plutonium from Fukushima.

Oh, yeah... and Rap's water heater blew up.

And don't forget that the Mississippi River is really just beginning to recede, the Northeast US is already flooded in several places from the runoff from Canada (why can't they just steal the water like Colorado and Nebraska do for Kansas?) and the Missouri River basin is busy sandbagging for the runoff from record breaking snow-melt runoff that's just beginning.

In Texas and Oklahoma the livestock is dying and crops are past fail-point from the extended drought.

(And Spaw has gas.)*

* Are we thankful that only one significant WMD threat appears in our lists?

A little "comb over" story.

"And I just discovered some poison ivy in my bushes!"

That sounds serious, Bill. How about if I come over there and bring my ivy-clearing glubs, and you can reward me for my help with a beer or two, and some autoharp tuning and tips(yes, again). I still owe you a B-day celebration, anyway.

Yes, Arizona is still on fire.

They seems to be calling it the Wallow Fire, although the town of Sringerville is probably the population center of that area.

The fire is only 6% contained and there is wind and very hot weather. Over 100 degrees in Phoenix.

And while the rivers here are receding, another meltoff from the remaining snowpack is due any day -- and God help us if we get significant (>0.5 inch) because the rivers REALLY be out of their banks!

Iowa reports a levee that broke last night. Emergency sandbagging in progress to erect a secondary barrier to avoid flooding of at least one fairly large town.

Was it on your news?

I wouldn't call the sexting thing 'nothing.' If I were a Virginian, and discovered that my Congressman had no more brain, no more loyalty to his family, and no more common sense than that, then I would want to know, and I would want to get rid of him.

For the rest of us, I agree that it's hardly important. And I glance at the headline about such a thing and don't even read the article.

Saul, you are right on!!! I watch precious little TV news, and would cancel my subscription to the LA Times if my wife would let me. I get most of my news online, and most often look for a corroborating source for what I read.

Leeneia, most times the headline does not convey the main theme of the story. Often it is contradictory to the text. They are not to be taken a face value.

That's because the "5 W's and an H" are no longer taught in journalism school. AP and modified AP leads are used. Instead news focuses on "feel good" stories and stories about people and events most of us couldn't care less about.

I don't care about Weiner's weiner, except insofar as it highlights another danmedfool in Congress who ought to wear his pants backwards. Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, Lady Gaga, Tom Cruise, Kaylee somebody, and the rest whose names I see in the papers at the checkout stands I've never met and likely never will -- so ask me if I give a rat's patootie about them. Some actors and actresses -- such as Henry Winkler -- I do care about because they ARE well-trained and good theater people.

But I do care, deeply, about people made homeless by tornadoes and floods and what we as Americans (and human beings) are doing for them. I care about the kid who right now is cutting my lawn because some day he's going to be in charge and I hope he can get the information he needs to make cogent, reasonable, decisions.

If the news media is dying it's because of suicide.

"If the news media is dying it's because of suicide. "

My take is on that is that the media is more interested in ratings than news. Profits - and not the public interest.

Rap: That's because the "5 W's and an H" are no longer taught in journalism school
Are the "5Ws and an H" the same as Kiplings 6 honest serving men:
"I keep six honest serving-men
(They taught me all I knew);
Their names are What and Why and When
And How and Where and Who."

Cheers

There ought to be a seventh, "Whither", but for some odd reason this seems to have virtually dropped out of the language. Maybe we don't like to think to much about where we are going...

Re mentions of recent weather disasters above (more newsworthy than lots of what's reported) NOAA has issued a new report on recent Weather Events in the US.

The "news version" is at:

April's weather extremes 'never before' seen, US experts say

The interesting, albeit rather long and tedious to read, actual report may be of interest at:

the report by experts at the National Climatic Data Center.

The actual report does say that the "number of signficiant events" in April was unusual for a single month.

Same ones, yup.

New York Times, Wall Street Journal, The Times, The Idaho State Urinal Journal, The Canton Suppository Repository...newspapers no longer gather news, but report what others have gathered or said they have gathered. I find little difference between the "mainline" papers and "News Of The World" or any other tabloid.

I even read more comics online than appear in our local wrapping paper. By the way, they haven't added or dropped ANY comics since at least Calvin and Hobbes grew up.

I'm not in favor of a man cheating on his wife, or even behaving like an adolescent nincompoop; but for goodness sake the man is going to have to step down from office and he didn't even get any!!

I feel we were totally manipulated by the media on Weinergate- it's like the Toyota story that went on and on and had only a grain of truth to it.Far mor important agendas on the political front.

And meanwhile; the Governator, who was being a totally scumball all along, sailed off scott free, as far as his job. The greedy self indulgent governor of New Jersey used THOUSANDS of dollars of states' monies to fly his offices' helicopters to his sons hockey game, and is getting away with that. NOW he's reaching in his fat pockets to repay the cost- why isn't HE being investigated and given the boot!!!

But what saddens me is that Weiner, idiot tho he may be in his personal life , didn't really do anything totally corrupt or illegal, except stand up fearlessly and tirelessly for YEARS for the working person and the disadvantaged. Shame.
