From: GUEST,Jon I've still got it somewhere but I'm not sure where but a folk club tape of things, actually the good things rather that off bits, that worked really well. I was in hosptial when it was made. On it are a couple of tracks of a young Irish girl we knew as "Irish Audrey" who came from Carlow way (Bagenalstown?) and sang "Red is The Rose" and "Only Our Rivers" quite brilliantly and some of Mike Hand (RIP) who really could have turned pro, Another would be Father Liam Corish and from when he was ill in Llandudno Hospital, entertaining other patients with "Rambles of Spring", "Bread and Fishes", "(Don't you let nobody) Turn You Round etc.) Only snippets (although the songs are complete) really but put time/place and uninqueness into it and they are more than commercial CD can ever be... |

I do own several very rare Sun Ra Saturn albums, but I guess my most TREASURED slab of ULTRA RARE SOUGHT AFTER CULT vinyl is a copy of the original yellow-label Blakey edition of the first Back Door album with which I would not part for all the tea in ASDA. That it's also one of the finest albums ever made is a consideration too of course... |

The reason it's so rare is that Bruce would break every copy he found. People he stayed with knew to hide their copies when he was due to arrive. I found it on E-bay for 27 bucks, and then called him up to tell him about it. Bruce asked, "What are you going to do with it?" I told him that I was thinking of making bootleg CD's. Also treasured: the Folktrax CDs of 19th century shantymen, even if you can't understand half of what they're singing! Close to the top is Judy Collins's "Maid of Constant Sorrow." Cash value of all five together, used: maybe forty bucks. Sentimental value: priceless. |

From: Phil Edwards I gave my copy of Noah's Ark Trap to Ship Dawdler a year or so back Indeed he did, and a fine and generous act it was. I borrowed my mother's copies of Amaranth and For as many as will in the summer of 2005, saying that I'd put them on CD for her. I didn't have much experience with ripping and burning at the time, so I still hadn't done anything about it when she had a stroke in October and went into hospital. After Christmas she was discharged into a residential home, mobile but a bit confused. I got the various bits of audio hardware & software sorted out, and ripped Amaranth - to two 20-minute files - in February. In March she had another stroke and never came round. SoAmaranth those two albums - the "Anthems in Eden" suite on Amaranth in particular - have meant an awful lot to me. |

He is backed by the Red Onion Jazz band, somthing Dave Van Ronk did a few years later. Actually, there are a few song usually associated with Van Ronk on this record. CD came out recently and seems to be pretty cheap if you look for deals. |

Yeah, I have it in mono -- at the time I bought it, I thought stereo was a fad (still do, in fact). I doubt if it's rare, but for me it lives. I especially like Eric von Schmidt getting kicked under the table, or whatever, before he dares rhyme anything with "front", and Mel Lyman going into a trance and playing "Rock of Ages" over & over till they had to fade him out. |

From: Sir Roger de Beverley My signed copy of the Paul Simon Songbook "To Bill and Rog: Thank you for the bed, the meal and the conversation" from 1965 just before he went back to the US and global fame I must have bought it just a few weeks before he stayed with us. The album was released in 1965 and was deleted when S&G made it big. I think that it had a very limited release in the US before being withdrawn. Finally made it to CD in 2004. Just reminds me of a time when I was eighteen and was sharing a flat with my friend Bill who I haven't seen now for about 40 years after he moved to Africa. I still have the album but it is very worn through much playing. Roger |

From: Fred McCormick Probably an Ace of Hearts LP of Michael Coleman, which had the most awful bejasus artwork on it you could ever imagine. It got supplemented, but never quite replaced in my affections, by Gael Linn's superb double CD of Coleman which they released in the 1990s, and which was recently re-released. The beauty of it is that the Ace of Hearts has several tracks which never made it onto the later compilation. Then there's the very first blues LP I ever owned; Back Country Blues by Brownie McGhee and Sonny Terry. The Manchester Angel. Yup. Definitely MacColl's masterpiece. Kingdom of the Sun. A marvellous LP of Peruvian music on the Nonesuch label, which no record of Peruvian music I've come across since has quite been able to match. John Doherty. Pedlar's Pack. An LP from the EFDSS Folk Classics stable. For all the controversy surrounding Peter Kennedy, and the way he treated his informants, this one breathes more life into Doherty than all his other records put together. Old Time Music at Clarence Ashley's. A 2 LP release of music from Doc Watson, Fred Price, Clint Howard, Clarence Ashley, Tex Isley and several other good guys from the North Carolina/Tennessee border. reissued on CD as Original Folkways Recordings of Doc Watson & Clarence Ashley; 1960 through 1962. The Best of Muddy Waters. Sublime, mate. Totally sublime. Harry Cox Sings English Love Songs, and English Folk Singer. Two LPs which came out around the same time and which complimented each other magnificently. Grand Airs of Connemara. The LP which first opened my eyes to the wonders of Irish sean nós singing. Just about anything in the Living Tradition series of ethnic music LPs, which Argo released from the collection of Deben Battacharya. Fred McDowell. I do not play no Rock 'n Roll. That was the one I managed to snaffle from the tighest dealer in the busines, for a mere £3.75. Hedy West. Old Times and Hard Times. The first, and for my money the best, of three LPs which she recorded for Topic in the 1960s. All three have just been reissued on an unmissable Fellside double CD. The Muckle Sangs. A double LP of some of the finest field recordings of Scots Child ballads ever assembled. From the same stable (Scottish Tradition) Music From the Western Isles, Bothy Ballads and Gaelic Psalms from Lewis. There have been many more in the series, but those are the ones I definitely wouldn't be without. There's quite a few others as well. But they'll do for now. |

I've also got some early Blue Note 45s that I acquired from a DJ who was giving up the business that are possibly worth a bit. As far as Folk music is concerned; I've still got a gatefold 'My Boys Can Play Anything' from Skinners Rats (plus lyric sheet) and The Shanty Crew's first album. |

From: GUEST,Ken Brock I used to have John Denver Sings, from 1966 (only 200 to 250 copies were pressed), but sold it on ebay 11 years ago. I still have a copy (not a bootleg) of The Beatles Christmas album (a 1970 compilation of their 7 Christmas singles for the fan club), that is in terrible condition and the cover rotted away from water damage. Among folk, I have the cover (the 78's broke years ago) of The Alamanac Singers Whaling and other songs, which Pete Seeger signed for me in Williamsburg, VA in the 1980s. I also have 3 letters from Tom Lehrer, the first of which was principally to thank me for sending a copy of the play script to the 1927 version of the George and Ira Gershwin - George S.Kaufman STRIKE UP THE BAND, which has never been published. I figured America's greatest satirist of the 1950s and 1960s would be interested in the work of the greatest American satirists of the 1930s, and I was right. |

It says 'What is YOUR rarest' etc. A personal collection, not an archive. I would certainly keep anything rare on either vinyl or plastic in an archive but, once it is archived, why should I treasure it? The song holds the memories. Not the album! I found that one stashed in a cardboard box in the corner of a book store. When I saw it, I grabbed it and raced for the check-out desk! I also value my 3 recordings by Steeleye Span, as several people here have already mentioned them. For sheer sentimentality, my copy of Steppenwolf Double Live, the first LP I bought with my own money. My first 45 rpm (rememeber those) was Jan and Dean's Little Old Lady from Pasadena. |

CD would be all my Jackie Leven, John Wright & Kieran Halpin. All the above & the rest of my collection hold memories for me, so to me are valued, nobody else might think so. |

From: GUEST,Chris B (Born Again Scouser) For pure sentimental value, I'd say 'Fotheringay' (an old pink label copy from 1971), 'On The Shore' by Trees (which I got for my 14th birthday), 'Please To See The King' and 'Hark The Village Wait' (both original labels), 'Sound of Silence' and 'Parsley, Sage, Rosemary and Thyme' by S & G, 'Blue' by Joni Mitchell, 'Threshold Of A Dream' by the Moody Blues', the first Planxty, Boys of the Lough and Bothy Band albums, 'Chemins De Terre' by Alan Stivell and some daft stuff that I don't even listen to but it just carries memories like the first Horslips album with the daft concertina cover. Never been as sentimental about CDs - maybe they're just not such nice things. Also I'd hate to lose any of the dozens of tapes I brought back from Cape Breton in the late 80s. |

From: Phil Edwards Most of my most valued music didn't cost me anything, thanks partly to the kindness of both friends & strangers and partly to sparing use of download sites* (I avoid downloading anything that's commercially available, although I have made an exception for a couple of albums which have been re-released on CD-R by D. Bulmer*). This includes albums by Peter Bellamy, Nic Jones, Tony Rose, Shirley Collins and Tony Capstick. I'd pay money to replace them legitimately. Speaking of Capstick, I wouldn't part with any of his LPs, even though I only got them in Oxfam a couple of years ago. One of a kind. *If anyone wants to discuss either of these controversial topics could they do it on another thread? I don't want to hi-jack this one. |

He has bought all kinds of fancy equipment (including a turntable that sucks the record flat) but hasn't done the software yet. If it ever happens, I spect I'll give the LPs to the FSSGB library. |

Pat Sky, "Songs That Made America Famous"? Bikel and Gooding, "Young Man and a Maid, Love Songs of Many Lands"? Electra in the mid-50s - I can't find any indication that it's ever had a CD release.)
