Well, looks as if the Rupert Murdock is about to make it to the US side of the pond and if Murdock's people get caught here, as they have in the UK, then FOX could take a major hit... Like loose its FCC license...

Tables seem to be turning away from the 30 year grip the right has had on our politics and our news sources...

Looks good on the smug suckhole... errr, arsehole... errr... His Arseholeship. Has he now got a "ship" in The House of Arseholes?

Am I not right in thinking that the Fox network is just that, a network? (A bit like ITV used to be over here in The UK.)

Lots of different broadcasters franchised to their programs whereas Fox News is cable so not subject to licensing in the same way.

So if I read it right, it would go down through advertising boycotting it rather than US government intervention. Politicians would drop Fox immediately if they felt association was bad for their image and Fox wasn't in a position to throw mud back.

Makes interesting reading. Far more than the rather harrowing and downright awful reading of what has been going on in their UK operations. I sincerely hope they haven't been using such tricks in The USA, as the families of those affected just don't need this.

Mind you, delighting in his downfall? isn't that the state of mind these media dues rely on in order to sell their rags anyway? I wouldn't take any enjoyment from it, despite having been on the receiving end of his "people." Enjoyment of this state of affairs is why the affair exists in the first place.

Donuel is correct, follow the money. If and when the big advertisers decide to pull the plug, even the biggest media outlet can go down the plughole. And that happens when it becomes clear that enough of the public are really pissed-off.

That happened with the News of the World, because the facts about the hacking of murdered Millie Dowling came out, and turned too many people's stomachs. So if, for example, people come to believe that there is evidence that 9/11 victims and families had their phones hacked by FoxNews , I wouldn't give the organisation a snowball's chance in hell of surviving, at least without sacking their existing executives, and a bunch of familiar faces. At very least, that is...

It isn't down to politicians making decisions, they'll just jump on the bandwagon as fast as they can - to avoid being booked onto the tumbril.

Dont be silly, they each contain facts and observations worthy of editorial news coverage that we might see weeks down the road.

The point of advertising revenue is big nut something I had not considered until I read it here. My conjecture involved only the largest owners on the board and shareholders.

Cable channels do not have the same rules as broadcast such as having to fullfill a public need or obey language standards
but frankly I am unsure if they are not constrained by any goverment regulations whatsoever. They do have those emergency broadcast tests,
Which I may add were never used on September 9th 2001.

Isn't this a bit much? Three of the top seven threads are about trashing Rupert Murdoch.

Although the evasion of privacy charges are serious, there is an underlying current here.

The BBC fans want Murdoch's empire destroyed and their side to have a state-run monopoly. The US Left and the Democrat Party want Murdoch discredited and Fox news destoyed. The future of the concept of a "free press" is in serious trouble.

As much as people look down on the tabloid side of the press, it is driven by an insatiable desire on the part of the consumer. Murdoch's "give 'em what they want" attitude is perfectly reasonable. Fault lies with the bad taste of the consumer.

"The BBC fans want Murdoch's empire destroyed and their side to have a state-run monopoly. The US Left and the Democrat Party want Murdoch discredited and Fox news destoyed. The future of the concept of a "free press" is in serious trouble."

PDQ: This has nothing to do with 'BBC Fans', which a ludicrous concept in this context anyway, and it's nothing to do with left verses right as both sides of the political divide have been sucking up like lampreys to Mr Rupert's arse. For that reason alone, the Murdochs are, and have been a threat to UK democracy. Despite this rather sad and hubristic display by the Murdochs in the line of some pathetically gentle questioning from all but two of the committee members (and one custard-pie throwing tit), they have overseen one of the most scandalous acts of press criminality most people have ever seen. Remember, most people in the UK don't buy Murdoch tabloids so there's a sizeable number of people who think this is outrageous.

This outrage is genuine and to a large degree apolitical and it's based on public outrage - basic moral code e all adhere to have been transgressed. That's not to say politicians are not jostling for position, of course they are but to think that's the major move behind these proceedings is a gross misunderstanding. View it more as Parliament and people vs. News Corp and you'd be closer to the true nature of how this is viewed in the UK.

You might think this outrage is misplaced, and perhaps in your world it is. Unless, of course, you think it's OK to hack into and delete voicemails from a murdered girl's phone, hack into 7/7 victims phones, the phones of the families of dead soldiers who were killed in action on active service in Afghanistan . . .

I'm all in favour of giving the Murdoch's a trashing, but I don't think you really understand what's happening here and how deep the disgust is amongst the people of the UK.

Free press in touble ?

Let me count the ways.

It was in trouble when journalists felt fear and intimidation to tell the truth, not from the sources or war time dangers but from their boss.

When a collusion exists between politicians, police and a monopolistic press under the control of one man, I say that it is a free society that is in trouble.

SOme prefer a free society and some unwitingly prefer a police state.

It can lead to starting wars for the benefit of war profiteers.

It can lead to the destruction of the greatest people due to the political whim of one man.

It can lead to a police state supported by fearful politicians and the full support of one man.

Murdoch has 172 TV channels in the US bound by FCC rules.
The right to out right lie in the guise of news was allowed when Reagan abolished the fairness doctrine. the slogan fair and balance is but another example of new speak in this Orwellian wave that has swept the world over the last 20 years.

Does a free press exist?

Yes pdq, the 5th estate does exist and yes it is in trouble, because of the nature of a man who sought to control not just newspapers, but all politicians, all police, all celebrities and everyday men and women in what amounted to a blackmail scheme and hush money mill to silence its victims. Justice itself was corrupted when investigations are canceled by the head of the police who had the closest relationship with Murdoch.

Now dead bodies and warning on FOX to keep quiet if you got hush money has entered the equation. These are things we should investigate. If investigating this is considered to be trashing Murcdoch, you are either biased or delusional.

The biased can eventually re think an issue. The delusional can not.

TUE AM at 7:30 FOX and Friends Steve Douchy introduced a story about Tiger Woods paying a phone "pal" hush money 2 years ago.
He concluded by saying, "I would have to say that if you have been given hush money, you should be quiet." the other male talking head then chimed in "I got the message!".

They then smirkingly grinned at the camera.

Seeing that it is proven that NEWS CORP has paid 755 MILLION DOLLARS in hush money to keep cases out of court thus far, I found the threat made by Steve Douchy to be huge. Particulary when the first whistle blower against Murcdoch was found dead in his home the day before!

Poor Rupert coudn't remember ever of having asked how they got a story, Poor Rupert does not recall ever hearing about the $755
dollars paid out for hush money after keeping a case out of court.

You can believe him if you want, but enquiring minds want to know.

"The state" doesn't run the BBC, pdq - that's just not how it works. The size of the licence fee is set by the government, that's true, keeping it far below what we pay for access to satellite channels(and to many of the sporting events which we used to get without any extra payment.)

There is an editorial duty to provide balanced news coverage. Much of the time this means coverage that reveals and explores things the government of the day (any day) would very much sooner wasn't revealed or explored.

I suppose if you are accustomed to news media which are heavily biased, in any direction, the notion of balanced coverage might seem strange. Basically it means reporting all sides without spin and lies. Not that difficult an idea, but not one that is commonly put into practice. The BBC does it pretty well.

Police chiefs, CEOs of subsidiaries, politicians and private detectives may well go to the wall, but the Teflon coated arseholes who presided over the whole sorry mess will go on being a menace to a decent society until said society grows a pair and squashes them and all their ilk.

A "free press" is the common excuse for allowing the dissemination of lies and prejudice masquerading as news, and that is not what was intended as the meaning of the phrase.

It is supposed to mean telling the truth without fear or favour, the antithesis of the Murdochs' activities as displayed, for more than three decades, over three continents.
