27 Jul 11 - 04:07 AM (#3196363) Subject: RE: Fictitious tribute to Edith Piaf. From: SRD Not fictitious, but Djamila from Piaffinitée performs Piaf's songs as well as anyone else I've heard, not a carbon copy as she brings a lot of herself to the performance, but very much in the spirit of the originals. Most of the other artists I think would do justice to the work have already recorded some of the canon. |

27 Jul 11 - 06:58 AM (#3196452) Subject: RE: Fictitious tribute to Edith Piaf. From: BrooklynJay Many years ago, I became aware of the very talented French singer Denise Le Brun when her one-woman show aired on Public Television here in New York City. She specialized in the works of Edith Piaf and Jacques Brel. I don't know if she still performs (or, indeed, if she's still alive), but articles on the Internet indicate she played an engagement here in the States as recently as 2007 when she was 71. I have fond memories of her TV special, and wish that I had owned a VCR back then. She was an impressive singer. Jay |

27 Jul 11 - 04:21 PM (#3196794) Subject: RE: Fictitious tribute to Edith Piaf. From: Colin Randall The makers of the film La Mome/La Vie en Rose used Piaf's own voice throughout until near the end when they wanted to show how she had begun to lose it. only then did they let the star of the film, Marion Cotillard, sing. Or so she said in an interview (I think she was slightly miffed since she sees herself as a bit of a singer). So maybe not Cotillard. I'd go along with Flossie provided Richard Bridge were not available. |

27 Jul 11 - 06:23 PM (#3196875) Subject: RE: Fictitious tribute to Edith Piaf. From: Q (Frank Staplin) Whatever. Two views which will never meet. In my view, Edith Piaf is one of the greats who never will be equaled. Flossie M. might improve if she discarded the boom-boom approach to ballads. |
27 Jul 11 - 07:12 PM (#3196899) Subject: RE: Fictitious tribute to Edith Piaf. From: Thomas Stern I think there are a couple of "sounds" of Edith Piaf (as was true with Billie Holiday). The early recordings (1936-1945), before the illnesses and drugs are most interesting to me. They are collected in a 4-CD box issued by Polygram. My reaction to some of the late recordings is that she has become a caricature of her former self. BTW - does anyone have the EMI box set of LIVE recordings? (issued the same time as a larger box set of the EMI studio recordings, possibly about 1990). Thomas. |
