Appollonio Cittern for sale at 12th Fret

I bought one of Nick Appollonio's Bell-shaped Citterns about a year ago...I now have it on consignment at the 12th Fret in Toronto. I was not playing it that much, being mostly a guitar guy, just tried it out of curiosity for awhile. Now I figure I'll put the money toward something else.

So I'm letting people here know, because I know that many of you love Nick Appollonio's instruments and might like to get this one.

It has a red spruce top, South American mahogany back and sides, mahogany neck, and it produces a BIG sound. Lots of resonance and great tone. And it's in brand new condition.

Those citterns have paired sets of strings, rather like a mandolin, but they're a lot bigger, so they have a deeper tone. They should be ideal for Celtic and Maritime music. They are normally tuned in either "open C" or "open D". Nick says he likes them better in the "C" tuning for the deeper sound it gives, and I think I agree on that. So you work up from a low "C" on the bass end pair of strings (the C note that is below the bass E on a 6-string guitar). That makes for a pretty deep tone on the bass end of the instrument. This one rings out long and powerful when you strum across all 10 strings.

Nick normally sells these instruments new for about $1,000. I've got this one selling at the 12th Fret (in Toronto) for $750.

It might be just what you're looking for. If so, stop around at the 12th Fret and give it a try. I need the money to pay for a photoshoot and promo package my Dachshund has his little heart set on. He's hoping to get a starring role in a upcoming major Hollywood film about wiener dogs, so this is important! Please buy my cittern! ;-D

Website here: www.12fret.com.
It doesn't appear to be listed yet. They're easy to deal with and ship. I got a guitar from them back in... was it 2001?

Strange that they haven't listed it, because it's been there on consignment since June 17th. I just called today and checked to see if it had sold, and they told me that it's still there, so I figured I'd let people at Mudcat know about it.

Why in the hell does Nick Appollonio make a gawddamn water tank and why would 12th fret sell it? Even moreso, I am completely bumblefucked to know that LH actually has one! What's the deal? Are you really into the "green" thing are now storing rainwater?

I can't figure it. Is the damn thing somehow musical? I can see how you might get some interesting acoustics in one of these old style underground mohunker types but for the life of me I can't see how you could be too musical with one of the newfangled types. I think you got a yourself a good fuckin' over!!!

They'll sell anything that Nick makes, Spaw! His reputation is that good. Last February they sold a musical commode he made, and for big bucks. When you sit down on it, it plays a happy tune and it amplifies whatever else happens too. You would not believe the sustain...........................simply in-fucking-credible. I'd have bought the thing, but it was way out of my price range. I think J.P. Cormier or somebody like that walked away with it.

Anyone searching for more information might have more luck using "Apollonio" as the search term.

I hate being caught with a cittern empty on a Saturday night. Boy, you got trouble. With a capital "T".

$750 is a steal. They're now going at auction for twice that much or more.

As for the cittern, I have one and adore it.

And Spaw, you can't outpun Nick. Can't be done. He's a Maine coastal musician whose most recent CD is "Cittern on the Dock of the Bay."

Is that right, Dan? On auction where? Maybe I should yank that cittern out of the 12th fret and sell it some other way. Got any recommendations?

yeah the price is cheap--i'd grab it but i have about twenty citterns bouzouki's or their cousins.

i have heard apolliono instruments and they are very goos. i am looking for a short scale cittern to tune with a high a string eventually . that would suit playing fast tunes and droneish song accompanyment

not that i need one.

but what the heck little hawk--whats yhe scale length of the resonating strings. thats from nut to saddle?

This one has a really long scale. I can't tell you exactly what, because it's in Toronto and I'm not there to measure it, but it's at least as long as the scale on a dreadnought guitar, maybe longer.
