Is is in sadness that I must post the death of Tom Highes. He was an organiser for Darlington Folk Club for many years and a friend. He lost his battle with cancer at 8.30 on Wednesday.

I will update with funeral details as I get to know.

Love, hugs and light to Jenny and family. xxx

Undoubtedly sad but could you please clarify who has died - Hughes or Highs? I say this as there is also a Tom Hughes from the Manchester area - one of the two surviving "Hughes Brothers"

Thanks
Ray

It's a few years since we saw Tom but will always remember his great drive and enthusiasm for Darlington Spring Thing and indeed the folk scene locally and nationally. Without him we are diminished. Our thoughts are with his family at this sad time.

Oh man. I am so sorry to hear this. I sang at Darlington Folk Club in 2010 and had a lovely evening. I had no idea that Tom had been ill and I would never have known it when I met him. My thoughts are with his family.

Another really wonderful man gone to join all the others that have left us.

Sadly,
Debra Cowan

Sad news indeed. I too was unaware of his recent illness - but then again I'd not made it up to Darlington for some time.

On my relatively infrequent encounters with Tom, mostly through Darlington Spring Thing, I found him to be a truly genuine chap, one of those constantly enthusiastic, loyal and ever-obliging "backbone of the local folk scene" characters without whom....
My thoughts and condolences to Jenny and his family.

Visiting Darlington has always been a highlight of our UK touring schedule, mainly because Tom was a delight to spend time with. We'll miss him.

I assume that this is the Tom Hughes that compered for very many years at Saltburn ff?

It is always sad to hear of the death of folkies who were the bed rock of the music scene

God rest and condolences to Tom's family

Very Sad News. Tom had mentioned to the Family at Saltburn Festival, just a few short weeks ago, that he had a battle ahead....Tom did a great job in maintaining the Spring Thing, Darlington, as a weekend to look forward to over many years, and the local scene will certainly miss his drive and enthusiasm. Those who new him, will miss a throughly nice man. Condolences to the Family.

To clarify for Guest Ray - Tom was indeed one of the Hughes Brothers and made a feature of the family's appearance at the Spring Thing each year.

He will be sadly missed by all folkies in the area.

Well Tom was given a good send off yesterday. The church was full. There were high points and there were low points. The over riding message from the family was - life goes on.

Loverly day, good to see old friends again and join with them a celebration of Tom's life. Rest easy. xx

I saw Tom perform alongside Johnny Silvo a few years ago in Darlington Folk Club and Tom was a lovely singer and guitarist in his own right with a gentle sense of humour.I hadn't realised Tom had died until reading about the sad news of Johhny Silvo, who like Tom is suffering from inoperable cancer.
It is sad that neither will never sing in Darligton again but they will in heaven.
God bless to Tom's family.
