They come from The George Gardiner Collection, and the two lines below appear only in his original notebook No. 9 Page 109, and seem to be ascribed to Samuel Bull: "On highland mountains so far away, there dwelt a lovely maid" - Tune Rambling Sailor. and "Come all you tender parents where ever you may be" Does anyone know which songs these lines are from. From: GUEST,John Moulden It's likely that the first is a version of Mary and her gallant soldier, it's in Sam Henry and there are various ballad sheet versions. More if you can't find it. The second is such a common first line form that I wouldn't venture. |

If you search the Roud Broadside index there are 14 entries for that as first line with title as Highland Soldier or similar. There is no Roud Number given for the entries, which usually means no collected version known to him. The tune is given (on at least some of them - I didn't check all 14 entries) as The Rambling Sailor. Having said that I've just redone the index search as a cross-index search and there is one extra entry with Roud No: 2496, collected in Co.Tyrone by James Foley from Tommy Quinn (source: Arts Council of N. Ireland: Harvest Home No.1). There are 16 entries in total for that Roud No. This should give you the search results: Highland Soldier Re: Come all you tender parents wherever you may be The Roud cross-index search gives only 1 entry for that as 1st line: The Little Chimney Sweep, Roud No.1549. From: Reinhard This might also be Roud 2496 "The Gallant Soldier", one version of which starts with "On the lofty mountains far away". The Traditional Ballad Index has this song as Gallant Soldier, The (Mary/Peggy and the Soldier). |
