BS: My kitty is dieing...

Subject: BS: My kitty is dieing...
From: Bobert

Well, Emma, our 9 year old female calico is dieing... We've had her to the vet and she has HIV in cats, she has quit eating and drinking and unless we want to put her thru dieing maybe next month at the vet with tubes feeding her she is still dieing...

It's a bummer and part of me says to take here and have her "put to sleep" but she doesn't seem to be in any pain... She is comfortable and just sleeps and won't eat or drink...

It's a bummer...

I know, Bobert. Sometimes it is difficult to make that final decision. Rule of thumb for me is, are they in distress. When it gets to that point and the vet says there is nothing left to..............

Oh my. Oh dear. If she will not eat or drink, it's time. She can't tell you she is in pain, but, if she won't eat or drink...

I've been there and done that a few times as many of us have, perhaps even you?

If it's a done deal, do it. I know I would want someone to be that merciful to me if I couldn't eat or drink.

Sniff.

My heart goes out to you and to her.

Sorry Bobert. Went through that not all that long ago. Our Katie-cat had lymphoma, which we only found out about after she stopped eating. The thing to remember about cats is that once they stop eating, they have a tendency towards liver failure.

I'm sorry you, the P-vine and Emma have to go through this.

I think I agree with Jacqui, and it's the level of distress. Does she seem to enjoy anything? Sleeping, being petted or anything?
Not eating, even starvation, probably isn't something that's bothering her. I've hear many people say you have no doubts when the right time rolls around, if it does.
Hugs.

Both of mine reached that point within a year of each other, and both were miserable, so hard as it was, when the time come I took each to the Humane Society to be euthanized. They might have died soon on their own, but they wouldn't have been happy or comfortable. The calico, in particular, her body language said she felt bad; I took her home to bury her, and her face looked so much younger and peaceful - I hadn't seen that look for a long time. Poor thing.

Take care of yourselves and your kitty; it's equally painful whether you wait or do it now. Hugs all around.

My vet charges a small fortune for this procedure and disposal isn't cheap either. When the first cat was so ill it needed to be done that day it was a Thursday afternoon and no one was in and the emergency vet wanted a horrendous fee to check her first before they would do it. I called the Humane Society to see if they could recommend a vet open that afternoon and she said they do it for whatever I could donate. They understand that the last act of kindness we can show a pet is to give them a peaceful death, so they don't charge.

Bobert-

Very sad when this happens.

One of our strays that we adopted we later learned had feline HIV. He survived for another 5 years but his life was cut short. In his last week we noticed that he was sleeping much more, and being more snugly than usual. Then one morning he went out and didn't come back. We later found him curled up beneath a pine tree in our back yard. We still miss the big lug.

So very sad to hear that, my cat was 18 but I still did not want her to go. She had been such a faithful friend it was a hard decision to agree to her being put to sleep but she wasn't eating or drinking at all and could hardly stand come the end. Despite that I still found it hard to let her go I just hoped that nature would take it's course but in the end it was the only thing to do.

I am sorry, Bobert.
Two facts from experience:
1 If she is not drinking, her kidneys will shut down leaving her in severe pain.
2 If you find her purring for no reason, she is in pain. It is a mechanism cats use to deal with pain.
Do what you know is right.

Just what I was going to point out, Marigold. Esp. if they are not drinking. Cats go down hill quickly without hydration.

Much love and hugs to you all, Bobertdarlin'. It is never, ever easy, but the relief to them is a gift we can give in return for the unconditional love received.

When their kidneys go there is a form of dementia they experience. My oldest cat could be treated with a form of dialysis by injecting 200ml of saline solution under the skin on his back twice a week. The bulge of water slowly is absorbed and passes through the kidneys, clearing them out. But he was strong and hated it and we hated it and decided not to torture the cat for the next few months to try to keep him alive.

$#@! You have my sympathy. Ome of my most senior cats is going through this as well. She seems to have had a stroke (front and back legs go at a different gait, eats and drinks heartily every other day but drops food from her mouth) When she's napping she just wants left alone but when she's awake she wants company, and then falls asleep cuddled up to me. Whatever the decision at the vet's, it'll be one of the hardest decisions you have to make. Like they said, follow your instincts and your heart.

Gnu, It's an IV and a large volume of saline solution, not what would fit in a syringe. It takes a few minutes to drain in from the IV bag once you have the needle under the skin and you have to hold a struggling cat in place all the while. My son helped me with this and the first time he nearly fainted. It was rough on everyone.

Emma came from the animal shelter in Jefferson County, WV, where she spend about her first 6 months so she was an "older kitten"... She was a calico with brown and tan and white with a tabby tail and she was always kinda on the frail side... I doubt if she ever weighed more than 7 pounds... Until about 4 years ago she had Meeko, a black long haired cat who protected her but when he died she became lonely and depressed... She did not do well with our other male cats and lived mostly in out farrowing barn back in Virginia... Actually she had become quite independent in there and the only way I could get her moved with to trap her in a Have-a-Heart trap and bring her down in the trap... Since getting here she did calm down and let up pet and hold her again... She loved to sit on the front porch glider and just watch everything... She will be missed terribly by us...

With the exception of GfinS's thoughtless post, thank you all for your supportive posts...

We've had a general design for our gardens and there is this place not far from where Emma liked to spend her days and we'd planned on using some hardscape there so I buried her there and now it's just a matter of finding the perfect rock from our collection which will act as a headstone... We've always come up with names for out various beds so this one will be "Emma's Bed"... The two main plantings in it so far are two camellias but it will end up with a lot more before we call it quits on that bed...

Not too sure about wild roses, brucie... They are kinda, ahhhhh, wild and don't bloom too well... Plus, I'm not a rose kinda guy... The Emma bed will be a mix of azaleas, hostas, Lenten Rose border, the 2 camellias and a few specimen plants with the large stone marking her grave... I'm down to two stones... One is granite (150 pounds or so) with a quartz streak in it that came from West Virginia mountain and the other is a chipped river rock (real cubist)... I donno...

We've had a long series of cats and dogs that have come and gone. It's always tough losing one, specially in certain individual cases, because some of them have very strong and memorable personalities. The best, most loving cat we ever had was Sammy, back when I was a kid. He was extremely smart, very gentle, affectionate, cooperative with house rules, not your average "bad boy" tomcat at all. Think the COMPLETE opposite of Garfield in every respect, and that was our Sammy. A true gentleman, a prince among cats, and still missed to this day.

I'm sure we don't view our pets as 'animals' but as personalities and characters in their own right. They're as dear to us as any member of the family, and the grief is as great as that of losing any person we have loved.
I too have had a long series of dearly-loved cats, and one or two have stood out as exceptional. I also had a Sammy, Little Hawk, a wise and kind Siamese. And long before that, a Simon, who was as intelligent as a human. He often astounded me with his actions. Today we have Smokey, another Siamese (but grey in colour) who I can safely say adores me with all his heart. He's not young any more and I dread the parting one day. Minty is my husband's special guy, he speaks to him in Malinke, and I swear he understands! Murphy is the timid and nervous one, needing gentle handling and reassurance. Oh dear, we love them and lose them, it breaks the heart, but they enrich our lives immeasurably...

God bless you Bobert for your compassion and kindness. You have taken in these cats and given them a secure and happy life. How lucky they were for you to have found them!

Just saw this now. So sorry for your loss. It is one of the hardest things anybody goes thru, but you made the right decision. Went thru it myself 4X. Never gets easier. Bless you all.

So sorry to hear this Bobert, I've done this too many times with my cats. Remember the good times, cherish the love and fun, and know you did your best.

Look after yourself mate, Chris

We had to have ours put to sleep back in the spring. She had a pretty big growth on her jaw that was causing a lot of pain as well as difficulty in eating. We had her for 20 years although she could well have been a year or so older as she came to us as a rescued cat.

She had me pretty well trained so I could recognise the "I want out NOW!" yell, the I want fed NOW!" yell and even the "There's no food in my bowl! I'm not hungry right now but I might be later so put some in NOW!" yell. She was pretty patient with me and would persevere until I got it right.

On the big day, she sat on my lap for about two hours and seemed puzzled as to why I was blubbing like a baby and seemed to quite enjoy the taste of tears.

We have resisted getting another because she was such a one-off.

My heart goes out to you mate.

Eddie

Well, Emma would be very pleased to know that so many people have weighed in on her passing... Of course, she would be more pleased to be alive and back in her barn in Virgina, chasing mice and generally owning that barn...

Thanks again, all...

Maybe where she is now, she can catch the mice, but the mice don't die, so they're there for her to chase them again. : )
