Bob Fox in War Horse?

There's a rumour that UK folk singer Bob Fox has won a place in the cast of War Horse, in London. Anyone know if it's true?

Last I heard was that he'd been asked to audition, so I wonder if that's still the case, and the story has simply grown with the retelling? I can't find any official confirmation, which is what makes me wary.

Tim van Eyken was best singer by far in War Horse, the next one was awful.

Apparently so as he's had to cancel all his 40 or so booked gigs

I heard last week that Bob couldn't make his gig at the Sunray club next month (for which we were the booked support act) because he'll be working in a West End show...

It's definite. He's had to cancel a gig at the Pump House Watford, and as has been said 40 in total. Shame for us, but a great opportunity for the man! Good luck to him I say.

I was at the last gig Bob did before all those he had to cancel/postpone due to being in War Horse for a year. He said he was very pleased to get the gig and that he'll have to learn melodeon for the part. Now I'll *definitely* have to go and see it.

Tht's good. He'll be great at it.

But now I'm kicking myself - I've tickets to see him next month in a show called the Pitman Poets, with Jez Lowe, Benny Graham and Billy Mitchell. So I didn't bother going to see him at the folk club the other night, thinking I'd be seeing him soon enough anyway. Now, I suppose, they'll be doing the show without him. Bugger!

Bugger! I would love to have seen Bob Fox.

We're going to see Warhorse later this month.
Does anyone know who's singing in it at the moment?

Saul Rose is the singer until the beginning of November.

I've just been in touch with Bob, and had the following from him, with a request to post it here:

Yes it's true!! I've been in London for the past couple of weeks since rehearsals started for a cast change on 16th November so I've had no time to make any kind of official announcement. I was very sad and sorry to have to cancel around 35 gigs to accommodate me being in War Horse but it's an opportunity that I can't turn down for all of the obvious (and some not so obvious) reasons.
I have managed to salvage some gigs including all Pitmen Poets, and the gigs that still appear on my website are all going ahead.

Well done Bob for getting the gig. Of course it's a shame for folks not to have him performing at their club/event, but, what an opportunity for Bob, (as indeed it was for Saul)
To play in the West End in such a prestigious show is an opportunity not to be missed. Bob....If you read this. Break as many legs as you've got, and don't take any advice from that Rose bloke!

"he'll have to learn melodeon for the part". Goodness. It took me about twenty years of practising guitar to be confident of performing in public. I can't imagine having to learn a new instrument to performing in the West End standard in a couple of months. But then again, I always knew he's a super-talented bloke.

Bob got in touch with me to say he would have to cancel the Topic FC gig planned in November which was disapointing for us but I can totally understand he couldn't miss an opportunity like this. Glad he has been able to keep the Pitman Poets gigs though - wish I could get to see them!

Bob said he is still doing the Pitman Poet gigs at Durham and Hexham and others that fall on a Sunday as that is his only day off from Warhorse. I heard him say this himself at the Davy Lamp just before he started his West End stint. Good luck, Bob. Hope you get the recognition your beautiful voice deserves at last!

You've got a brilliant replacement for Bob though haven't you? Benny Graham does a fine night.

Story in the local newspaper for Bob's home town.

(I'll only say that its appearance may not be unconnected with the news having been confirmed here on Mudcat ...)

Bob Fox takes over the role as Songman on 16th of November doesn't he?

Subject: RE: Bob Fox in War Horse?
From: Bainbo

Thanks, Joe, but I can't take credit. I offered to write the article, but the reporter insisted on doing it herself, so I suspect the description is Bob's own, for the benefit of a non-folkie. But you're right - barring one or two typos, it's a good piece, and probably all the better for having been written from the non-folkie perspective.

BTNG - yes, it's November 16. In fact, there appears to be a whole new cast from then.

I must remember to use the line 'Married father-of-two Bob, who is from Seaham and now lives in Chester-le-Street' in the publicity if I book him again!

Just read the book (Michael Morpurgo). If I go to see the show, it'll be like the bit where they shoot Bambi's mother most of the way through, and I'll need a couple of boxes of paper hankies.

(Don't let that put you off -- it's a wonderful story.)

I was there on Saturday night (14/4). I wholeheartedly agree - it was a fantastic production, and all the better for Bob's great singing and Tamsy's excellent songs (Only Remembered, sung by Bob and ensemble, never sounded better).

BTW - I thought Bambi's mother died in the fire??

We finally got to see the show yesterday afternoon. It was oustanding and there was not a seat to be had in the house. Bob Fox was brilliant, well I would say that wouldn't I, being a Chestalad (Durham speak). Using the national coach and bus pass in London made an economical day trip from Peterborough. This show is a must. Gan canny Brian

Saw it on a previous tour. Hated it. Couldn't wait for it to finish; if I'd been on my own I'd have walked out. Lame plot and those bloody puppets! The best way I could describe it was a pantomime with more than one horse.

On the other hand, you might like the thing but don't say you weren't warned.

"He'll have to learn melodeon for the part" - see Hamish's comment 12.10.11. My thoughts too, so when I saw Bob Fox at our local folk club just over a year ago, I complimented him on his playing and learning it so quickly (took me years too!)
"Ah" says he, "I only know that one tune - just learned that one - can't play anything else"! What a professional!

I saw the show a few years previously when Bob was Songman: best piece of theatre I have ever seen. had to resist the temptation to join in with the songs, all of which I knew, being surrounded by various unknown people who might not have appreciated that!
