An airline can change the "pitch" between seats pretty much at will, and even knowing the specific model or airplane you intend to fly on doesn't give a lot of assurance of how much space you'll have. As a general rule, if you get the "front seat in the class" there won't be a seat in front of you, so many times there'll be a little more room to stretch out. Also sometimes, the rearmost seat in the class also will have more leg room, but you may not be able to incline the seat, and the bulkhead behind is probably a lavatory. Nearly always the seat rows with the emergency exit doors will at least assure you that you'll have as much leg room as anyone else in the cabin class. In an airplane set up to ordinary spacing, the exit seats may be a little longer in pitch. In "higher density" layouts they'll be the same as all the others. In "very high density" layouts it may be necessary to leave them a little longer in the leg than the others, since there has to be at least the theoretical possibility that the fat people won't jam up in the exit. IF you can get a seating plan for the airplane you'll be on, it may be some help; but the airlines - especially recently - don't seem to much care whether they give you any reliably helpful information. Your most likely source for decent information is the particular airline(s) you plan to fly on, and they may be able to send you something or may have something online, but my experience with what they publish hasn't elicited a lot of trust. I'm flying Lufthansa, one airline that does seem to care about it's customers but in the old days (before online seat bookings) I was told by a pimply faced youth at the British Airways desk at Heathrow that there was no difference in the legroom. Some others were in the bulkhead row. All of them looked as comfortable as those of us crammed into the regular seats. I'm on the west coast of America and haven't flown anything but Alaska Airlines in recent years. They don't charge for seat assignment. I had no idea that any did. In fact, when one gets a boarding pass from a machine one is given the chance to change seat selection. |

They also offer extra legroom seats for, I think, $60 more (comes with board-first privileges), which might be worth it for some (I'm 4'11", so not for me). Carryon and one checked bag are free, and flights are inexpensive. By far my favorite airline. C |

It is MUCH easier to travel - long distance today....than 55 years ago.
Standard cabin configurations offer OVER 50% isle seats.
ALMOST every single NATION in the world has an international airline. Follow the maps...the refueling stops offer astounding bargains.
There is NO Extra Charge for seat selection. You can view (via computer) the current seats available.
With a prior phone call. SOMETIMES (not always) the cabin crew will adjust tall, or the fat (Grand lower Junctioned), and children to alternative seating if it is flexible.
EVERYONE onboard ... wishes EVERYONE a peaceful flight.
(I believe, I witnessed, a passenger - sedated, manacled, and seated in the "flight-crew-jump-seat" behind me. Perhaps, ten fellow fliers were aware...on a full passenger load of 360. But, if the Captain, leaves the cockpit - something most serious - is a float.)
The air space is secure. You are free to move around the world at will.

He leans across to her and says the Delta Airlines motto, 'We love to fly and it shows.' The woman looks at him blankly. He sits back and thinks up another line. He leans forward again and delivers the Air France motto. 'Winning the hearts of the world.' Again she just stares at him with a slightly puzzled look on her face. Undeterred, he tries again, this time saying the Malaysian Airlines motto. 'Going beyond expectations.' The woman looks at him sternly and says 'What the fuck do you want?' 'Ah!' he says, sitting back with a smile on his face, 'Air Canada.' |
