why do some threads which seem to have been inactive for a while suddenly start again with a guest name and the only message being "freelance writer"

I don't see the point of the spam.

Do they think someone here is going to be inspired to hire a freelance writer because we have seen the words "freelance writer" incongruously added to a thread? Fat chance.

Maybe it's a secret plot to harm freelance writers and the people who hire them. I suppose it would frustrate people who use Google to search for "freelance writer" and end up at Mudcat.

OK, it just dawned on me what the point of the spam might be.

Ads on Mudcat pages—placed there by Google, I think—are frequently matched to the content.

So putting the words "freelance writer" in the text increases the chance that certain ads will appear.

Let's see what happens if I do this:

OK, I see an ad for "amazing joint relief." Is that related?

'OK, I see an ad for "amazing joint relief."'

Sounds like a good idea to me, but I always get the munchies, man.

---------------Yeah - it's an old line of spam which sometimes survives longer than it should. (Note to self: Must try harder.....) Mudelf-------------------------
