07 Nov 11 - 03:35 PM (#3252312) Subject: Hark the song of Jubilee hymnsing 11/20/11 From: Haruo The fifth Evergreen Hymn-Sing will take place at Fremont Baptist Church, Seattle, the afternoon of November 20th (officially 2 pm, but we may actually start a tad early as we have to get out promptly! the refreshments will precede rather than follow). This time the focus will be on the songs of two somewhat neglected hymnwriters, F. E. Belden and C. A. Tindley. The former is fairly well represented in the Seventh Day Adventist hymnal, but essentially unknown outside that denominational tradition, while Tindley, though he merits the title of grandfather of black gospel hymnody, is almost unknown outside the black churches and not as well known there as he deserves to be. (IMO, of course.) We will also feature a number of other songs some of you may like to hear or sing. Here's the tentative songlist: Be joyful in God (Montgomery; tune from Hesperian Harp) Together let us sweetly live (I am bound for the land of Canaan) Hark! the song of jubilee (Montgomery; Syro-Phœnician aka Lebanese tune) I will sing of Jesus' love (Belden) We'll build on the rock (Belden) Lo, what a wondrous sight appears (to a composite tune reminiscent of "Joys Seven") Jesus shed his blood for me (Korean hymn to Doane tune) Stand like the brave (Fanny Crosby) Shout the battle cry (W F Sherwin) Courage, my soul (Tindley) The great storm is over Let every lamp be burning bright (Belden) Give me oil in my lamp A certain man held a feast Bruce's offering O when shall I see Jesus (Morning Trumpet) When Israel camped in Sinai (to Webb) God who is Father, Mother (to National Hymn) Where shall I be? (C P Jones) You who fed us quail and manna A better day is coming (Tindley) Heaven's Christmas Tree (Tindley) Pisgah Medley There is a land that is free (Tindley) Belovèd, be faithful Sqwah-tee-nee-she-sdee, Yee-ho-wah (Cherokee; Cwm Rhondda) Christ, the Lord, all power possessing (Cwm Rhondda) I'll write some more on some of these in the next few days. I'm particularly interested in what I can learn of the tune for "Lo, what a glorious sight appears" (#446 in the 1985 Seventh-Day Adventist Hymnal).
