BS: New Royal Yacht...!

From: Big Al Whittle

Apparently there is a campaign to buy the Queen a new royal yacht.

She could sell the Van Dycks to the National Gallery, then we could all see them when we wanted. That would buy her a new yacht, and we would all get something out of it.

Education isn't a common thing among certain families, I mean they go to school and all, but they have this genetic incapability to actually learn. It's very common among the inbred and those who support and vote Conservative.

Al, maybe sell of some of her real estate holdings that should bring in a few quid! (thinks: "I wonder Balmoral and the surrounding land is worth?") :-D

Royal yachts are a fascinating anachronism, perhaps, but anachronisms can be fun. Apparently, The Royal Yacht Britannia was decommissioned in 1997 and is open to tourists in Edinburgh. Admission is £11.00, £9.50 for us old folks over 60. I didn't find a cruise schedule - too bad.

Wikipedia has a List of Royal Yachts of the United Kingdom. and a fascinating article on Royal yachts in general.

The Daily Mail has an interesting article on the Britannia.

We tourists find all this monarchy stuff very entertaining.

sorry you really do need to read your history, before making idiotic statements like that the lend lease loan was repaid:

Payment was to be stretched out over 50 annual payments, starting in 1951 and with five years of deferred payments, at 2% interest.[27] The final payment of $83.3 million (£42.5 million), due on 31 December 2006 (repayment having been deferred in the allowed five years), was made on 29 December 2006 (the last working day of the year). After this final payment Britain's Economic Secretary to the Treasury, Ed Balls, formally thanked the U.S. for its wartime support.

As to World War I, the US stayed out of it till 1917. The American presence made little or no difference to the final outcome.

It should also be noted that the US were not the only country loan the UK money for reconstruction, Canada also did, and they were repaid as well, so...the UK owes you nothing.

It seems to me that the "prestige" of traveling on the Royal Yacht, and the amount of time the Royals actually spend on it could pay for at least the use of a cruise ship. People pay thousands of dollars to ride on a boat with the likes of "The Barenaked Ladies" and "Glen Beck" How much more would they spend to sail with royalty?

According to the Daily Mail (who initiated the campaign to build a new Royal Yacht on 12th November this year, and designed a blueprint of it) the 80 million pounds would be funded by 'donations from individuals and corporations'. It would, they say, earn its keep by being chartered by various organisations. If these 'individuals and corporations' have 80 million pounds to spend, would it not be better to use the money to generate employment for the young? Or any other charitable/beneficial enterprise? And why let the Queen use it? What does she propose to contribute financially? (Nothing, I bet!)

You do not seem to realize the valuable contribution I am giving right here on this thread. I am suggesting that the Crown commercialize the whole thing. I am simply suggesting that it be taken one step further and run like a US sports franchise.

By the way, I see that the on-the-night total for the Children-in-Need event was 26 million. If these wealthy boat contributors would instead donate to that very worthy cause, they might do some good. 80 million would be only too gratefully received.

I see what you're getting at , Jack. But would Her Maj be prepared to appear in this commercial enterprise? No-one would pay to board the Royal Yacht unless the 'Royal' was present. She already makes a mint by charging an arm and a leg to visit a few State rooms of Buck Palace. But a mere boat would need some incentive to command £1000 entry tickets. Maybe the corgis...? Be photographed wearing Princess Beatrice's weird Wedding Hat? Free tupperware cereal boxes...?

So.....when I become queen (I'm still waiting) and buy the new Royal Yacht, you are all invited to the inaugural Mudcat Royal Yacht Shindig. Tiaras optional. Royal Yacht Shanty Singing will begin at 5pm.

Cheers

Do we have any suggestions for Royal Yacht Shanties? All suggestion welcome, either known or composed-on-the-spot shanties. May Gawd bless all those who sail in....sorry, on.....her.

Actually the Britannia was not a 'yacht' in any sense of the word - it was a cruise liner, albeit a small one. It has no sails whatsoever. But I'd like to see her Maj. leaning over the side feeding the fish as they tend to do on tall ships.

Actually I don't think it'll ever be built. The speculative articles in the press are all based around a campaign mounted by likes of The Daily Stale, The Daily Torygraph and their acolytes, and you know who you are, and they'll be campaigning hard you can bet.

......and speaking of benefit scroungers and tax gougers I see the old royal yacht is finally earning its keep as a tourist attraction berthed at Leith Ocean Terminal, Edinburgh.

all the Royal Yachts have been designated yacht since they were first built, so seemingly accuracy is not been asked for.

The United Kingdom has had 83 royal yachts since the restoration of King Charles II in 1660. Charles II himself had 25 royal yachts, while five were simultaneously in service in 1831. Since the decommissioning of Britannia in 1997 the Queen no longer has a royal yacht.

The old Brittania was not a cruise liner, but a hospital ship, and served in that capacity. HM just got to use it when Britain wasn't at war. After a repaint.

Gurney, according to Wikipedia. Britannia was designed so that it could be converted into a hospital ship in time of war but it was never used in this way.

I'm not sure how it works but other ships also can be called up to serve in time of war. SS Canberra was one of a few that did serve during the Falklands war. for example.

My guess is that HM's own would always have been very low on a call up list for wartime service.

There's a scots song about Elizabeth the Yen which points out (correctly) that as the Scots never had Elizabeth Tudor as their Queen, our present Queen is Elizabeth I to them. ("How can we have a second yen when the first yen's never been?") So I would therefore be Elizabeth II!!! Perhaps Her Present Maj would relish an early retirement? She could mingle among the guests and (for a small fee) recount interesting stories from her past travels with 'Pheeleep'
By the way, does anyone know all the words to that scots song? I can't find them on Google.

I think it was by the writer who called himself Thurso Berwick, actually a Scots dominie called Morris Blythman. I think he also wrote Sky-High Joe, a song about the blower up of the letterboxes with the EiiR logo which went on then, to the Rickie Doo-Dah tune ~

Noo Sky-High Joe is on the go

I heard that song in Ireland, way back in either '67 or '68. Curiously at least a couple of the natives seemed to think it too irreverent, though the same audience happily sang 'Off to Dublin in the green'.

A further verse (as I remember it) went;

Now, her sister Meg's got a bonny pair of legs,
But she wouldn't hae a German or Greek,
Peter Townsend was her choice
But that didn't suit the boys,
So they sent him up the creek.

Back to yachts-can I come too? I think that purser would be a good position.

No it isn't McGrath. It is more like the US elects the "prime minister" and makes him do ceremonies as well.

Well done, MtheGM and gnomad, that's the very song! We sang it to 'The Sash My Father Wore'.
Queen Jennie, your emeralds are being crafted as we speak, and a very good choice, may I say! I will have enormous bling-bling diamonds, no need to stint is there?
Royal wave and sickly smile (as after Her Maj's Christmas message, she always looks like Grommit!)

And thanks to you too, Eliza* ~~ I have racking my brains as to what the tune of Scotland Hasnae Got A King was originally, and you have reminded me.

*Ooops, sorry ~~ Your Majesty, I mean of course.

"I think that purser would be a good position."

Don't know that one, Gnomad ~ or not by that name. Anything like reverse-missionary?

Of course you can come too, gnomad, and you can adopt any position you like.

Ta, I think my experience in crewing passenger boats, preceded by banking, sort of fits. Added to that it shouldn't be too strenuous, so yes, somewhat like reverse-missionary. I get to see the world, meet all the visiting folkies, sounds good. Think we can get this project rolling?

More words here, second post down. I searched under Scottish breakaway, which I thought was the title.

gnomad, I don't see why our project shouldn't be a goer! Yes thank you for your kind offer, we will need a purser. You can have a grand uniform with lots of braid. Good Queen Eliza and I like to see a bloke in a nice uniform.....at least, I do.

Hurrah for the Queen and her yacht!
To me Way hey ! Ha!

Braid eh! Sounding better and better, I'll be in my cabin until your arrival(s) is(are) signalled.

Sounds as though the deckhands have started to arrive. There may be one who needs to lie off a while until he is slightly less 'lively' (and notices that we need two Queens in the chorus, as in the verse) Picky, yes, but this job is about attention to detail.

The Queen was in the quarter gallery
Eating bread and honey;
The King was in the cabin boy
And he was in the money!

There most be hundreds of such floating verses, as easily adapted to the Royal yachting crowd.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Oh the ship's dog was a corgi
He was in on every orgy

The footman, he was Whittle,
who was up for the slap and tickle

Gnomad was the purser
And he was even worser

The song title you were looking for was: - "The Scottish Breakaway"

Our Royal family costs the Exchequer of this country (Note: Exchequer NOT Tax Payer) £32 million a year. The Civil List only has two recipients The Queen and Prince Philip between them they cost the Exchequer £7 million per year.

The Contribution of the Royal Family to the Exchequer not counting personal tax bills is somewhere around £320 million each year.

So a Royal Yacht can be bought for £80 million eh?

Look what you could buy for around $360 millionUS

Plain old Offshore Construction Vessel
