I would like to be able to play a few traditional songs on my Mandolin. Does anyone have any suggestion I could learn a few "simple" songs quickly. lloyd61 |

05 Oct 99 - 01:25 AM (#120844) Subject: RE: Need help with Mexican Music From: CarlZen (1)The CD 'Los Super 7' is mainly Tex-Mex, but most of the songs are older Mexican songs, many which the musicians remembered from their childhoods. Check out the "SingOut!" web site. The most recent issue has a big article on this CD, along with some songs. (2)One song I always teach my fourth grade students is "Cielito Lindo". I don't know how remote the village is, but this is such a widely known song that it can always get a response. The Hispanic children in my class all seem to be familiar with the song, and I get lots of response from parents who are happy their children are learning the song. |

We had an earlier thread with lyrics and chords recently on "La Llorona" which is a wonderful, scary, Mexican border song about the ghost of a weeping woman. There are two versions on record available: Joan Baez on Gracias a La Vida, and Tish Hinojosa's Aquella Noche (with lyrics). It is really easy to play (I do it Am, Dm, Am, E7 (repeat) Am, G, F, E, Am, G, F, E (repeat)) and would sound fabulous on the mandolin. There is a tougher one Tish sings, a traditional called "Estrellita" which would be dynamite on the mandolin. I can post the chords if you hook up to that album (great, great album, turned up thanks to a Mudcatter). yours, Peter T. |

You can als search the Digital Tradition lyrics database by category by putting @spanish or @mexican in the blue search box. Ted (inactive) I have always liked "Adelita"--but I have a suggestion for you-- When you play for people from in other countries, remember that they know their own songs, and usually way better than you--what they would be most interested in are the songs from your country, so polish up your favorites, and take along a couple songbooks of stuff you could play if you knew the words, to cover any requests that you get--there will be requests! |

My friend, Leo, enjoys the old American folk tunes like "Old Joe Clark" so it will be interesting to see how his family reacts to the music. The family lives on a farm far out in the mountains. But show interest in Mexican folksongs and learn some by the people you're visiting: I'm sure they'll appreciate it. I've made the experience that a certain knowledge of foreign folksongs is most appreciated by people abroad. One evening during a student meeting in Germany I played two greek folksongs on my flute, and the Greeks present nearly went crazy for joy - it was so unexpected. Wilfried |
