NOËLS DE NOTRE-DAME DES DOMS, PROVENÇAL CAROLS
Notes about some words: some specific words are often used, so instead of writing a note at the bottom of each and every song including any of them, here there are: "bregado/bregada": "group/brigade": here, band of shepherds, set of co-workers, coterie of people...) The term "bregado/bregada" often has a militant connotation and implies a common aim. We've translated it as "countrymen" "counfraire/confraire": member of the same brotherhood or just co-worker, colleague. "coumpaire/compaire" (fem: "coumaire/comaire"): fellow-countryman/woman, neighbor, friend/buddy. "sénher/senhor": senhor is mainly a term of address and means lord, but it can also be used otherwise. Sénher can mean either lord, sir, gentleman or Mr. according to the context, i.e. "Nòstre Sénher"= "Our Lord", "un sénher vièlh" = an old gentleman, "Sénher!" = "Sir!", "Sénher Untal" = "Mr. So-and-So". In Provence "sénher grand" was used to mean "grand-father" hence also "old man" "sus": "come on", "get going" it's an expression used to exhort, encourage, urge on |
19 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM (#3276646) Subject: NDDD thread change history From: Monique This post describes significant edits which have been made to messages after they were posted; it does not list when new song entries are added, as the posting dates reflect this. We're in the process of revising the Provençal lyrics and making other changes which affect the ABC scores. Also, in the scores, after the modernized notation, we now include an approximation of the original music notation.

19 Dec 11 - 01:50 PM (#3276647) Subject: ABCs, MIDIs and scores for NDDD carols From: Monique [Message from Artful Codger] ABCs, MIDIs and PDF scores for these songs currently may be downloaded from this SkyDrive repository: (CLICK). The scores include only the first verse and refrain (if any), in the Provençal classical norm. With the ABC notation you can generate your own MIDIs and scores, possibly transposed to a different key or modified in some other way. If transposing, I recommend that you first remove any "Original notation" sections. My notation uses ABC version 2 extensions and abcm2ps-specific directives which may cause problems for convertion tools other than those based upon abc2midi and abcm2ps. I recommend using the online converter at mandolintab.net (but pass it individual tunes, instead of the entire NDDD tunebook!) Don't bother with the Concertina.net converter; it cannot handle my notation. For writing or converting ABC on your own computer, several packages exist which integrate the compatible programs, such as Nils Liberg's EasyABC (available pre-built for Mac and Windows, with simple installation). They should also be capable of loading the entire tunebook. For most songs, the original 16th/17th c. manuscripts include music notation, from which the scores were derived. No meter was indicated, and temporary variations in meter were common and not overtly flagged. Meter notations and bar line placements in the modern notation have been inferred. The musical notation in the second collection largely corresponds to modern notation (apart from bar lines and persistence of accidentals), so for those songs I present only the original notation, as closely as I can emulate it. We have had to guess at the appropriate tempos; the transcribed scores contain no tempo indications. Sometimes we were aided by finding recordings of the pieces; at other times we were guided only by the tone of the words, bearing in mind that noëls of the period were commonly set to dance tunes or the tunes of popular secular songs. Any glaring differences in tempo from actual practice in Provence are largely my own. --AC (Jump to quick links) |

01 Feb 12 - 03:44 PM (#3300478) Subject: Lyr Add: Sus, levem-nos, bregada From: Monique There are two transcriptions of this carol on the manuscript.
(2) A consistory, in RCC is a meeting of the cardinals summoned by the pope; outside the RCC, the word may also apply to a local administrative body. (3) The version you'll find at the bottom is previous to this one which has one more verse. It's clearly visible on the manuscript, the handwriting is quite different, the spelling of the version above is better. Though, the first version gives this word as "cou" (neck/collar) and "un cou de pelisson" did have a meaning: a fur collar, here to keep the baby from the cold while "un cor de pelisson" (a fur heart) is quite puzzling.

17 Nov 12 - 10:49 AM (#3437811) Subject: Music: 1-25 Cantem tots la gloria dau filh From: Artful Codger The score accompanying this text is clearly a harmony part; I haven't found a corresponding melody part. We know from the index and the several page numberings that not all pages of this collection have survived. Not infrequently, the first part written down with a text was a harmony part, possibly because the melody was so well-known at the time that recording it was of lesser priority, or even deemed to be unnecessary (until later). In these cases, the melodies might appear on another part of the page or on a separate page entirely—wherever room remained. Here, the melody part was either lost or never written down. The first is the melody of the song. At the end of that score is written the beginning of one of the other three parts, but while those parts fit together (after a fashion), they don't fit well with the song's melody. My belief is that they form an instrumental piece, perhaps played after the song or between verses of the song. There's only an old saying "A fach coma lo curat de Quinçon, monsur Raselet" ("He acted like the priest of Quinson, mister Raselet") but I couldn't for the life of me find anything about what this priest might have done -the town tourist information office is as tight as a clam so far. It seems that nothing happened there during the French Religion War that might explain the reference. Nevertheless, "faire coma... monsur Raselet" might be a corruption of "faire monsur Rasclet" which means to run away, to flee, based on the verb "rasclar" which means to scrape but also to run fast. (3) Beatus garnitus: Beatus means "happy"; "garnitus" is no Latin from the Middle Ages, this pseudo-Latin was used to mean "preserved", hence "beatus garnitus de còsta would mean "happily preserved aside". Rob found actual Latin texts which used "garnitus", as well as concrete citations of its use to mean "garnished"/"dressed". So he thinks it means "richly garnished on the side." (4) "pro frigoribus": against the cold.

26 Jul 13 - 11:07 AM (#3542006) Subject: Lyr. Add: Anem, anem a nostra Dama From: Monique There are two lightly different versions of this song. FIRST VERSION
(2) "But": we had long discussions about the accuracy of this "but" which doesn't make logical sense; logically, it should be "So the good man woke up (consequence). Though, the way I imagine the whole thing "in real life", it does: Herod has planned the slaughter of all the baby boys. The angel comes to warn Joseph in his sleep then flies away. The murderers are on their way but Joseph wakes up and flees with wife and son. What is missing to make sense in the verse is a line about the murderers' coming to contrast against so that "but" can be justified. Maybe it's because I could use such a shortcut in my own speech that it never sounded really weird to me. (3) This verse also was a source of many discussions. After adding words and re-ordering the end to make it clearer, here is some additional explanation: First, I take "lou fet" (classical "lo fach") literally "the fact" to mean "the event", i.e. Jesus' birth. So I take it to mean that since they go to Bethlehem dancing, it shows that the birth happened secretly and when the news spread, they all headed for Bethlehem. If it hadn't been a secret, they'd have gone there before. (4) It means that he'll play well, not badly.

I have assumed that the key is C and that a C clef was positioned on the first line. In the Trésor, they have assumed the key is F (one flat), with a G clef positioned as in modern notation. Consequently, until the final note their note intervals are a second lower relative to the tonic than mine (and pitched a third higher). I'd be very surprised if that was the proper reading.[Back to song index by name, by number] |

(2) L'espissario: Carriero de l'Espissario /Carrièra de l'Especiariá: the former name of a street in Avignon, nowadays called "Rue des Marchands" (Merchants' Street) (3) The line in the manuscript 1181 is cut just after "dison". In the manuscript 1250, there's generally only the first verse as the manuscript displays only the bass voice staves. "Ben naut" (very loud) are the two missing syllables added by Clamon and Pansier. I see no reason to change them as they fit perfectly.
