CAROLINA MOUNTAIN HOME

This is the wonderful Debby McClatchy version, with her awesome banjo accompaniment. I'd appreciate the missing lyrics in the third verse:

I left my old home back in the mountains
For many long years I roamed around
I can hear that lonesome whistle blowin'
I'm going back there to settle down

        I love those Carolina mountains
The little girl I left behind
And I know that I never will forget her
Oh, how I long to make her mine

I looked out my window and wondered
How everything there seems the same
I can see those blue eyes of my darlin'
I'm going back there to change her name

I thought I'd head for the big time
I thought her bright eyes would be my guide
....
....

One line to go!

I thought I was headed for the big time

And I thought her bright eyes would be my guide

But now I

And sweetest girl will be my bride

I received a reply today from Cecily. She's gonna look for them and get back to me. I'll post the lyrics if indeed she finds them. But I'll let you know either way.

Here's my attempt. I think it's pretty close.

CAROLINA MOUNTAIN HOME
(Len Wright & E. L. Scarborough)
(as sung by Debby McClatchy on Sweet Sunny South)

I left my old home back in the mountains
For many long years I roamed around
I can hear that lonesome whistle blowin'
I'm going back there to settle down

     CHORUS
     I love those Carolina mountains
And the little girl I left behind
And I know that I never will forget her
Oh, how I long to make her mine

I look out the window this mornin'
Everything there is the same
I can see those blue eyes of my darlin'
I'm going back there to change her name
CHORUS

[instrumental break]

I thought I was headed for the big time
I thought those bright lights would be my guide
But now I miss those fields of blackeyed susans
And the sweetest girl to be my bride.
CHORUS
...Yes, how I long to make her mine.

I'm not totally sure of that last line, but that's what it sounds like to me. This recording is 2:50 minutes. She has a longer one, 3:55 minutes, on the Ancient Tones album. I don't believe that either CD included lyrics - I put them in deep, dark storage once I ripped the albums to MP3, so I can't find the CD booklets right now. I e-mailed the lyrics to Debby for final clarification. She may not be able to respond for a few weeks.

On Ancient Tones, the second verse is a bit different from what I posted above. Here's what I hear:
I looked out my window this mornin'
Oh, everything there was the same
I can see those blue eyes of my darlin'
I'm going back there to change her name

Many thanks, Joe.
I'd never have picked up "black-eyed susans" but that's what it is now I listen again. Thank you.

Thank you, Joe. I've written to Cecily and asked her to stop looking. Much appreciated.

Here's the e-mail from Debby McClatchy:
Hi Joe; words all seem fine. This is a radio ballad written by the Stanley Brothers, third verse by me. They had a weekly radio show where people sent in requests for short songs (ballads) they had written. It is one of my most poplular singalongs. The longer version has bluesy guitar, but I prefer the short with just banjo.
So, THAT's the story - Debby wrote the third verse. I found a recording by Ricky Skaggs, but it had only the first two verses. Now I know why.
