Getting a Song Outta Your Head???

Subject: Getting a Song Outta Your Head???
From: Bobert

First of all, this is a first... No, not having a song stuck in your head but having one of your own songs stuck in your head...

I mean, it's been two days now... I go to sleep running thru it and then when I'm working it's there bugging me... I tried listening to the radio today and that helped until I turned the radio off...

I mean, it ain't like the song is a bad one because it isn't but I'm sick of it buggin' me...

Any ideas short of suicide??? (That was meant to be a joke, folks...)

B~

So, Bobert, I hate to tell you this, but suicide is the only sure method for getting rid of an earworm. Either that, or listening to songs that are even more obnoxious and pervasive than the one that's bugging you now.

I'm very glad you didn't tell us the name of this song. If you do, it will be in all of our heads, and we'll hate you for it.

love,

-Joe-

P.S. It's a small world, after all....

Fortunately for you Joe, is that seein' as I wrote it about 20 years ago and never released any recordings of it, even if I did tell you the name you'd be just fine...

As for substituting Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey", think I'll take a pass...

(Now you've done it, Boderdz... Just the mention of "Honey" will get it on your head... Get the gun, son...)

Sheeesh!!!

It is certainly a mistake of listening to a tune before you go to bed.One tune that was sent to me I love, but never put it on for the reason that I cannot get it out of my head. As for your own tune you have to complete it.Work out an ending , go right through to the end and then try to forget it. Very difficult Bobert it seems to be a tune writers problem. You are obviously pleased with it.
A good sign.

Maybe that's it, Al... I thought it was complete... I recorded it (reel to reel) 20 years ago and hadn't thought about it in the last 15 or more years... But maybe it needs a rewrite???

See the tree, how big it's grown,
And girl, it hasn't been too long
It was just a twig....

And honey I love you,
And I really care
And I love thinking of you
But I don't really dare....

Aw, I can't remember it.

C'mon Joe....You know those are the wrong lyrics!

"HONEY".......(revised edition)

See the tree,
How big its grown
And now you're dead
I can't get blown
I've got an itch.
When you were alive
It cost twenty-five
Why did you always charge so much
You fuckin' bitch

Our tree grew large,
It fell on you
Now you're gone,
My balls are blue
I can't get laid.
So now I've started shagging sheep
And sometimes chickens in their sleep
But they want paid.

Oh Honey I miss you
Cause when you were alive
I could at least get a hand job
For a buck fifty-five.

Get it right next time ferchrissakes............

The best way is to replace it. Or rewrite it. I had that problem a while back with an incessant fiddle tune, "Mason's Apron" that I couldn't shake so I decided consciously to change it with another tune and rewrite it as a composite of another tune.

One of the most constructive ways to handle this problem is to write another tune or song.
Or take the one you have rolling around in your head and do what so many songwriters do,
recycle it.

I've found that earworms can be gotten rid of by meditating upon this picture .

No, wait! Earworms? I thought you said tapeworms!

Oh, Joe! How COULD you?!?

(I have NEVER forgiven my ex-husband's cousin for taking us on that musical ride at Disneyland on New Year's Eve 1974-ish. Arghhhh!)

Linn

P.S. -- Since sometime last year when I inexplicably woke up with "Green Green" being sung inside my brain by the New Christy Minstrels (which I hadn't actually even HEARD since sometime in the mid-'60s), I've been keeping a list of what song is in my head when I wake up...very strange list.

I too have no understanding whatever of the tunes that are running in my head when I awake. Yesterday morning it was 'Time to Get a Gun'; this morning it was 'America, the Beautiful'.

It is as if a continuous tape runs in my brain.

As for Bobert's problem - although after the sadism displayed in this thread :)- I expect it is now a different song haunting him - I agree with those who say it may be time to take a fresh look at that long-ago written song.

Sure sign you're watching too much news.
