21 Feb 12 - 06:09 AM (#3311538) Subject: Lovers killed by parents From: ChillToad I'm looking for songs involving lovers being killed by their parents. I'm singing at a good friend's wedding soon, and thought I'd throw in some depressing songs, just to show how lucky they are. I've been riffling through my current repertoire and Kate Rusby's 'A Rose in April' springs to mind, as do 'Suzie Clelland' and 'Andrew Lammie' (but thats a bit long). 'The Drowned lovers' (not strictly killed by parents, but they are certainly morally culpable) might suit. Other suggestions please? |

"Lady Diamond" could be a possibility- her father kills him (suffocation and sword) and is morally culpable of her death (broken heart?). Surely "Andrew Lammie" belongs under the category 'brothers'? I don't exactly see the foul play in "Clyde Waters"-surely he drowns trying to ford a river in flood? |

22 Feb 12 - 05:40 AM (#3311757) Subject: RE: Lovers killed by parents From: ChillToad Thanks people. Any combination of parent(s) out of four will do, as will any or all lovers. The Drowned Lovers is really Nic Jones' take on Clyde's Water, and I think that the two mothers definitely deserve to end up in Auld Nick's less than tender care. I had forgotten Famous Flower, though that too is perhaps a bit long. Andrew Lammie? Agreed, it was the brother wot dun it, and though the whole family connive at her death, I am trying to stick to parents. (I'm saving "brothers" for an incest theme on another occasion - don't ask.) I do like Young Edwin though and Betsy The Serving Maid. Lady Diamond too - anyone recommend any particular variant/recording? |
