What about Sunday afternoon (was it 1pm Pacific?) - I'll have a mic this week I hope.

STill don't know on Paltalk - can you play together or is it a take it in turn thing?

Nick - Unless they have changed it, it has been a take turns setup.

Frank - I tried music - live music and music - other without finding it (parental controls off), and searched by title, about an hour after you posted.

We do need to know when to expect the room to be open. 1 pm Pacific would be 4 pm Eastern/Mudcat time. That sounds good. I would be late on days when we host a Sunday afternoon sing here once a month.

Will you be open Sunday afternoon? Tell us exactly what you are under so we can find the room.

Great, Nick. I was just going to try to open one.
It is now 3:45 pm on the East coast US, so 12:45 on the West coast US, which is about what you suggested earlier. I'll go sign on now.

Now closed. Let's get some sort of schedule so we all know when to look for the room(s) on Paltalk. I can change the thread title to reflect open/closed/next open on ____ if people let me know.

From: Susan of DT

Is there any interest in having a room open on Sunday? Last time it was open 4pm Eastern/Mudcat time/1pm on the west coast US/9pm(?) in the UK and, I think, morning for Jacko in NZ. Is this a good day and time? Post if you are interested.

If Francy is not available perhaps he can share the
"code" with another who wants to moderate the room..
beware of tricks...it will be april fool's day tomorrow!

I have not heard from Francy (I did PM him). Nick opened the room last time. If he does not, I will start one, if there is any interest.

Paltalk runs a website where people can get together in "rooms" in real time usually to talk to each other. We use it to sing to each other. Mudcat has been using Paltalk (and its predecessor Hearme) occasionally since 2000 or so. It has been very occasionally lately. We are seeing whether there is interest in reviving this. We had a session two weeks ago, with just a few people.

You would need to go to the Paltalk site and download their software. Be careful when you do - their default mode is to open every time you use your computer, so install in advanced mode to say you will turn it on manually. We use parental controls off so we don't have to worry if someone sings a bawdy song.

Look under Music, Live Music. Francy's room of the week before was "Live Acoustic Folk Music", which we never found, and Nick's which we used two weeks ago was "Acoustic Folk". If I open one, I'll try to call it something like "Mudcat Live".

From: Susan of DT

To reiterate what is hidden above:

I will open a paltalk room today, Sunday April 1 at 4 pm mudcat/Eastern time. Assuming I can manage to open a room, I will call it Mudcat Live under Live Music, under Music on Paltalk.com with parental controls off. You need to download paltalk software to join the room.

We will see whether there is any interest. We had three people two weeks ago: more would be better.

From: Susan of DT

Someone else has claimed "mudcat live", so I have opened a room called "Mudcat Sings" under live music, under music. Remember to set parental controls to "off" to see the room.

I hope some of you will come. Since there has been so little response to this thread, I am merely hoping.

Come on in.

We had a few, but they left. Leadfingers was the last and I think he fell off, rather than planned to leave. So I am her eby my lonesome at the moment.

Another small but pleasant session, mostly me and Leadfingers, with a couple of others at the beginning.

I would really like to hear from interested people about when is a good time to have a room open and how often.

From: IvanB

No webcam required, maeve, but you'd need a microphone to be able to sing and/or play.

Sunday's fine for me, but I'm in SC until May and I haven't hooked a mic to the computer here. I probably would come in and listen though.

you can choose to activate a camera, but it is not required. (and I find it distracting, as you are already receiving audio from the room as well as the chat function scrolling...)

framus - I answered your PM.

So should we aim for Sundays? Every week? Every two weeks? Once a month? Is 4pm mudcat/eastern time good? earlier? later?

Is there enough interest to do this regularly?

I've been through several computers since my first attempts to get involved with PT. Seldom, if at all, was I able to establish a decent connection from my location, using the free access to that site. I remember spending more time asking for help than actually getting the help that I needed to get connected and stay connected. Even then, I couldn't be certain whether my mic time was able to be heard clearly by others in the various rooms I played.

Please tell me it's gotten better since then. I'd enjoy having the chance to share my stuff via PT again but I don't think that I want to deal with the glitchiness. It seemed that some, perhaps they were users that paid for access, had super fine clarity and others, like me, did not have an easy time of even staying connected to the site. Can anyone confirm whether they've worked out the kinks?

I'm guessing that part of the issue was my own gear. Apart from subscribing to the site, paying for better access, is there an optimal computer, operating system, sound card or perhaps a specific online access speed that one needs. What about the kind of microphone that one uses? Does that make a difference? Should I plug my guitar through a mixer and then into my sound card? Some of those who played sounded as though they were plugged into a PA system. I need suggestions about what might be the best gear to use. Any help out there in PT land?

Many thanks!

It does seem to have gotten better than it was. Do/did you have high speed internet access? I imagine that would be a problem if you had a slow connection.

Slow? Snail mailing my bits through the post office was faster but I was licking so many stamps that my tongue felt like the inside of a bottle of Elmer's glue. My mouth was so sticky that I could barely open it to chew. I decided to go on one of those liquid diets. Have you ever tried to stick a BLT and a six pack in a blender? (cue: rim shot)
