Congratulations on finding a new home, and an earlier time frame for those who work during the week.

Here's a song in the works to help commemorate the opening:

By Charlie Ipcar, 2012
Tune: traditional after Jump Her, Juberju/The Bigler's Crew/Light on Cape May

Dog Bar

The wind it blew from sou'-sou'-east, it blew a pleasant breeze,
As the man upon the lookout cried, "A light upon our lee!"
To which replied our captain, who by the rail did stand,
"Cheer up, me jolly sailor lads, it's the light on old Cape Ann!"

Chorus:

Watch 'er, catch 'er,
Jump her juberju!
It's brace her yards and give her sheet,
And the boys will see her through;
You should have heard 'em howling,
As their ship lost all her spars,
As she swept across the breakwater,
Well known as the Dog Bar!

Our helmsman swung our ship around, the mate he tossed the log,
As the wind blew up to half a gale, our ship was lost in fog,
But our lookout kept sight our guiding light, glowing faintly through the night,
"We'll soon be docked in port, me lads, enjoying seaside delights!" (CHO)

to be continued…

Feel free to contribute a verse or two.

Cheerily,
Charley Noble

Notes from Ruth from Gloucester:

The Dog Bar Breakwater is a granite breakwater covering a dangerous reef known as Dog Bar. The auxiliary light at the end of the wall had to be turned on nightly by the keeper by hand - often a challenging feat if seas were crashing over the breakwater. The breakwater is about mile long and made up of heavy granite slabs from Rockport, each weighing 12 to 13 tons. It is a popular spot for fishing and walking. To get there, follow East Main St., through the stone pillars just past Niles Beach onto Eastern Point Blvd. to its end, where there is a small parking lot.
