Princeton is about 300 km (200 miles) E of Vancouver (about a three-hour drive through spectacular landscape). A free festival, and entirely volunteer-run, open to all performers of traditional music. Two outdoor stages. The festival starts Friday night with a free public dance in the town square. Presentations, workshops, concerts, panels, from 10am to 6 pm Saturday and Sunday. About 100 performers. Glorious countryside (semi-desert, mountains), an ideal vacation spot, too. Each year we celebrate one of the founding cultures of Princeton. Last year was the year of the Scots, and this year we've put together several presentations from eastern Europe, which contributed some 40% of Princeton's population in the 20's. They came mostly for the mining - gold at Hedley, copper at Copper Mountain, just south of town, and coal at Coalmont (obviously!), Blakeburn and Princeton itself, which still sees occasional sink holes appearing in streets and gardens, where underground workings have collapsed. We'll have accordion music from Albania, a cabaret band from Turkey, a roma band, specializing in dance and wedding musics from across the Balkans, Slovenian singers, dancers and accordion music, and Russian songs (from our MP and also from a twenty-voice Doukhobor choir). Seattle's Folkife was across the street from my job for 3 decades, and only across the Sound from home, and sustained me for years, but it's gotten awfully stodgy and controlled over those years. I haven't been up to southcentral BC for nearly a decade despite a lot of time in VIctoria, so that will be a huge bonus as well. They are described as: "an outrageous Turkish-Balkan cabaret band. They describe their music as "kitsch meets classic with traditional music, warped into something east of cabaret and west of gravity." With guitar, bass, viola, darbuka (hand drum), vocals and accordions" I couldn't find anything by them on youtube, but here's something from myspace. Pierogies, cabbage rolls, some Greek food...as well as the great Indian food that was sold last year, plus a couple vendors doing hamburgers/hotdogs. I'm particularly looking forward to seeing what Barbara at Coco's Bistro puts together. |

I've just had some sad news from David Lowther of Without a Net - he's had a death in his family and can't make the Festival. A huge loss for us, but we send our very best regards to him and his family. Replacing Without a Net will be Kitty Lie Over (Annie Brown on fiddle and Mike Dowler on clarinet and pennywhistle) who promise to rearrange our notions of traditional Irish tunes. Which brings me to a question: I notice one group is called IN THE FAMILY WAY....and they describe their music as "traditional folk songs in three-part harmony" But I can't find out anything about them online. Who are they? What kind of traditional songs might I expect from them? Just curious. |

Doukhobors settled in BC about a hundred years ago and their reclusive communal way of life ensured that their folk traditions were well preserved. One of the most moving musical experiences of my life was hearing hymns sung by the Doukhobor contingent during an anti-Iraq-war rally in Nelson BC and realising that these people were not just responding to current events but were living out an ethical commitment to "peaceful life" which their ancestors had made many generations before, on the other side of the world. |

Palrticularly enjoyed Zeelia, Orchestra Silovicia, and Something About Reptiles. Also had the pleasure of meeting mudcatter's Bob the Postman. Hope you enjoyed it, Bob.
