09 May 12 - 02:28 PM (#3348780) Subject: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: mandomad It seems a bit daft to be advertising a session that has been running quite successfully since February, but after last nights visit by a ukulele orchestra from Shropshire who found us by accident, I thought I would make us better known. It's on every Tuesday, starting 8.30ish, in the Elsinore pub on Flowergate, Whitby, North Yorkshire. It's a session rather than a Folk Club. and everyone and anything is welcome. Run initially by myself, + Jingle and Mick Green, with the support of our friendly landlord, Len Macknight we have had many very good sessions with people finding us by accident. Plus several talented local performers. Bring your instruments, your voices or just yourselves! The customers seem to like us too |

09 May 12 - 02:41 PM (#3348786) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: mandomad No, the squeezeboxes takeover for the Folk week sessions, while we tour the town as Folk tarts, to find one of the many great venues to sit in and play mandomad |

09 May 12 - 06:38 PM (#3348883) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Jack Campin It would be nice to meet some Whitby locals at the Folk Week sessions - I've been there two years running and haven't managed to yet. I'll be there again this year and I'm fairly distinctive, so say hello, somebody! |

09 May 12 - 07:17 PM (#3348901) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: GUEST Whitby Scratch Morris has a number of 'catters. We are out dancing (or in a pub drinking!) on Monday, Wednesday and Friday afternoons. There is an informal mudgather on Tuesday evenings in the Endeavour's hosted singaround. |
09 May 12 - 07:49 PM (#3348917) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Nick Not a Whitby local, Jack, but a North Yorkshire resident if that counts. Hopefully say hello at Whitby this year. You can explain all the bits about modes that I didn't understand and play me a tune or two? |
09 May 12 - 08:24 PM (#3348927) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Jack Campin I should be at the Euro fringe sessions if they run again, at the Elsinore and Station sessions in the evening, and trying to see everything my season ticket has paid for at other times. Look for the guy with the rucksack or fisherman's stool pack full of improbable wind instruments. |
10 May 12 - 02:35 AM (#3349008) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Ann N :) you met a few locals last year Jack ...... mingling unnoticed in the sessions :D .... I must get some more practice in on Lamma Bada Yatathanna before August :) |

29 May 12 - 08:02 PM (#3357036) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: mandomad Just got to say what a success our last couple of Tuesday night sessions have been. Last week 11 performers entertained around fifty listeners. This week we had 15 performers, and what a friendly, very informal session both weeks have been. A lot of passing folkies going back to their digs to fetch instruments. Some brilliant stuff! mandomad |
31 May 12 - 05:54 PM (#3357810) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Ann N Great session :) Guitars, autoharp, mandolin, melodeon, singers, concertinas, whistle, a superb accordionist and all in a really friendly pub :D See you next week :) |

11 Dec 12 - 03:17 PM (#3450594) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: GUEST,Raggytash The Tuesday session at the FILO (in fact all sessions at that time) were terminated by the Licensee. With a new landlord in place a Saturday session started which runs each week. However the Tuesday session (which was very good) was not revived due to work committments of two of the main players (Stuart & Chris) No fall out, circumstances beyond the control of the players. In February Len, the landlord of the Elsinore, asked Tony & Angie Maher if they would run a session at the Elsinore which they have done successfully ever since and a very good session it is to! |

12 Dec 12 - 08:22 PM (#3451170) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Commander Crabbe There have only been two times I've fallen out at the FILO. Once during folk week when the landlord at the time was being an arse and once when I was rat arsed! Other than that things are fine as far as I'm concerned. When work stops being a pain I'm hoping to get to the Elsinore once in a while as it's a good little session and pub. I also wouldn't mind getting back to the Dolphin or Friendship occasionally midweek either. I haven't fallen out with anyone! (With the exception of management at work and this government) Merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to you all. Chris |

09 Aug 17 - 07:08 PM (#3870807) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: GUEST,Phil Good night with some great singing and playing, but it's one of those "group of regulars take turns to entertain the rest of the pub" setups and hence not really geared to welcome newcomers. (Guess I could have dived in during a lull, but most of my stuff's older (and grimmer!) than most of what I heard, so I wasn't sure it'd be welcome.) Heading to Whitby FC tomorrow night, which I gather is more of a singaround format and perhaps a bit more traddy. Horses for courses! |
30 Oct 17 - 10:55 AM (#3885680) Subject: RE: Folk Session in The Elsinore, Whitby From: Raggytash Tomorrow night (Tuesday) will see yet another night of music at the Elsinore. It really is a good night with a wide variety of "artistes" anything from a national name of the folk scene to a trawler skipper from Cornwall. Just one thing though, it's not a folk night but a music night, but predominantly folk ........... ish !! |
