I hear this morning that Caryl Weiss died Saturday; she was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer just over a month ago and it seems things went very quickly.

I'm mostly opening this thread because I'm hoping to hear other people's recollections of her: she was brilliant, exasperating, a fine instrumentalist, singer, and songwriter, and I know she did a lot more things than I ever knew about. When I first encountered her, in the mid-1970s, there were a lot of women who sang, but not many who focused on playing instruments. Although, obviously, she also did a lot of singing; she was one of the Liverpool Judies, a three-woman sea shanty group. In the early 19080s, we shared a record producer (Paul Mills). When I caught up with her again in the late 1990s, she was living in Austin, TX, and the next time I found her after that she was living in Annapolis.

Carol was a regular at DC area shanty sings. It is sad to hear. She had a great sense of humor. Her business card, which I am reading now, reflected her humor: Admiral Caryl Weiss of the Texas Navy (clearly pre-Constitutional), and listed her address as the Texas Embassy, Annapolis; her email was [e-mail]

She knew her songs of the sea and would gently inform those of us (landlubbers) just learning the songs, that "belay" probably didn't belong at the end of a capstan chantey.

I am sure the local DC area chantey haunts will sing some chanteys in her name. Most likely the Wheaton MD venue this Tuesday and Baltimore on 13 June.

Shocked to hear this news. Her late-1970s LP, "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm," was one of my favorites; I once emailed her to ask whether it was being reissued on CD, but at that time her reply was in the negative. I'm going to search again to see whether that might have changed in the years since our correspondence. Condolences to her family and friends.

Mary Katherine: four of the songs on With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm are on a CD she issued in 1994 as "The Twinstar Sampler". There are also four songs from each of Not Just Another Pretty Voice, Brand New Line, and Nautical But Nice.

Oh NO! Oh, how sad... Caryl was one of the world's great characters. I met her a few times in the early 80s - in particular a very crazy Philadelphia Folk Festival. I bought "With Her Head..." from her there and I sing many of her songs.
She told me how she had driven Stan Rogers to the airport and waved him off... the last friend to see him.
Oh, that is so sad... knocked me sideways, that has.

first met caryl p (and wendy g) at a rochester NY GL festival in 1981 or 82...I remember dueling versions of Roseville Fair, caryl p and "the ark" bob w making dewey-eyes at each other singing townes' "if I needed you", while singing partners and ex-wives grit their teeth...told her I was going to philly in the fall, and she gave me her "naked girl on a motorcycle" business card...we hung out at PFSS parties, cherry tree, bothy club (which I ended up running-I booked her regularly until she left)...I had fun at juggernaut sb jams, until some bad blood developed with her and peter t...she hooked me up with dennis g and kathy d'a, which later became an ot band...I remember her gurian w/ over-the-top fretboard inlays...

caryl was a superb singer, instrumentalist, interpreter, song writer and performer. she was a scream to be around. murray c told me she was unwell..I am so sorry to hear of her passing...

Caryl P was a good friend and a great supporter of other musicians whose work she liked. I remember showing up in Phillie for my first gig at the Cherry Tree and she was there (this was before her terrible accident) offering to carry my guitar case and ushering me off to the Gene Shay show. Whenever I was with her, I felt like a star--- she did that for people. She often backed me up on bass-- a great treat for a ballad singer!

I was delighted when she moved back East to Annapolis and we often jammed together or met to sing shanties in Wheaton. A few weekends before she died, Christina Muir, Judy Cook, Dennis Cook, Charlie Baum, and I sang on her birthday with her-- a few friends dropped in and her landlords made us feel very, very welcome.

Caryl told us wonderful stories from her life and sang a few a capella songs. I am glad, once we all learned that there was no hope, that she went so quickly.

Oh, no. I think the only time I ever heard her was last year at Mystic. I could tell that she was highly respected by performers (look at the crew who joined her onstage in KathyW's link!) and by audience members who were glad to see her arrive at the late-night pub sings.

I did not know that Caryl was ailing. My last chance to spend time with her would have been at one of Dick and Susan's sings earlier this year. Unfortunately, we had a conflicting commitment.

We met courtesy of Bernie Klay and the X-Seamen and she and the Judies performed at several events I ran in the 70's and 80's. Then, we all drifted in different directions.

I did not really know Caryl, but I had the privilege of seeing/hearing and video recording her at the FSGW Getaway in 2010 and 2011.   Here, with her permission, is a link to Caryl playing and singing An Angel's Wings at Getaway 2010.

I am deeply saddened by her passing. When she agreed to play banjo, concertina, and sing backup on my Sailing Ships & Sailing Men" CD, I was proud as punch to have someone of her calibre accompany me.
And she taught me to flatpick the "Beaumont Rag" on guitar. Caryl P was a superb instrumentalist, a great singer, a brilliant performer and a funny,funny woman.
I'll miss her.

I have crossed paths with Caryl numerous times over the years but the story which stood out to me as being the most remarkable was this.

Caryl said she would always wrangle some Press credentials and get a Press Pass for the Americas Cup race. In 1983 the U.S. lost the race for the first time ever (since 1851 when the race was first held). Australia had an innovative keel (which they successfully kept hidden from the Press) until after they won the Cup.

Caryl described being 1 of maybe a dozen photographers that were allowed to photograph the secret keel down at the dock the evening we lost the Cup.

She described herslf as being at the right place at the right time. She heard the keel was to be unveiled to the Press and she went down to the dock with her camera.

I think that one of photo's of the keel was featured in a number of magazines and may have been made in to a poster.

So for any of you that wondered if she ever had a brush with being famous; the answer is yes.

I was working with Caryl when she found out about the cancer. It was really a shock to even her, as she had assumed that it was only a gall bladder issue initially. Things progressed suddenly after she was diagnosed. I went to visit her in the hospital, and she was the same bold, vibrant woman, just stuck in an ailing body. She told me that she wasn't scared...just a little surprised to find that her time was less than she had thought. She told me that she wanted to get a bottle of liquor and float away to sea in a little sail boat.

Those who knew Caryl, knew that she was bold and said how she felt without inhibition. When she was mad, you knew it. When she was sad, you knew it. She told jokes that would make you laugh so hard you thought you would pee. She made friends with strangers, and treated them like she had known them forever. She gave advice that was always straight to the point. She talked about all of her dreams and hopes, and had faith still that she could accomplish them all. And she did accomplish anything she tried to do. She was talented, creative, witty, charming and invaluable to the world. Never have I met someone who was confident enough to be themselves regardless of what others thought. Although Caryl took me on an emotional roller coaster ride, I still believe that the world is less colorful without Caryl P. Weiss.

I just returned from a week away only to find this sad and shocking news in my in box. Like others, I knew Caryl was ill but this happened much quicker than anyone would have expected. I am deeply saddened and my thoughts and condolences go out to her friends and family.

I had the pleasure of producing Caryl's album, "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" back in 1980. I was introduced to her through my dear friend Stan Rogers. Caryl had done some work with him and was looking for a producer for her next album. She came to Canada and we recorded her in the same studio that I had used for all of Stan's albums to date - Springfield Sound near London, Ontario. We had a ball! I loved her musicianship, great singing and wicked sense of humour. The resulting album is still one I am proud of today.

Caryl and I kept i touch off and on through the years and talked about getting together again. She even hinted she may want me to produce another recording with her. Unfortunately, this was not to be.

R.I.P. Caryl P. Weiss. I will always remember you with great fondness.

Scatterd thoguhts: Every year, except this one, on May 1 we would receive a happy anniversary call from Caryl. I remember when she drove to visit us in NH circa 1984 in her blue MGB-- she loved it as we loved ours! Eating at the Pizza Hut in Dover, NH after her mcycle accident. Bill remembers her desire to do an album of sea shanties and cowboy songs entitled "Surf and Turf". Sitting with her, Bonnie and Bill in a bar in Philly circa 1975(?), visiting her Dad later....She hosted our son, Bowen, when he visited MICA in Baltimore, 2003. She had a voice we will miss.

So many good memories of Caryl as the sassy youngster in the sea shanty quartet Outward Bound, performing on the waterfront in Philly during the late '70s, opening for Stan Rogers when he'd play here. Then later as a solo act at the Philly Folk Fest. She was a joy to listen to and the world will be poorer with her voice gone.

Caryl was my friend from the early 70s and like many have mentioned here, the range of events with Caryl went from backstage at packed festivals to see Bonnie Raitt and Emmylou Harris, to hanging out at Gene Shay's show, to camping out in her room in her dad's house on the Main Line in PA. Her amazing connections included so many personal encounters with people who were big names and not, and it didn't matter in the least to Caryl who you were. If Caryl had a friend with her and met a friend, it was an introduction (by Caryl) of two incredible people who had in common a connection to Caryl Patricia Weiss. Caryl was not in great physical shape after her motorcycle accident, but she never lost her quick wit, deadly humor, and sense of connection to all of us -- close friends and musicians -- and people she met for the first time. To know Caryl was to love her, and also to hope that she didn't slash you to ribbons at an inappropriate time because that was an equally present part of Caryl. She was certainly one of a kind! Glad she went quick, and sorry I didn't get to say farewell. Caryl would slice that to pieces --- that's what I'll miss!

Caryl was always coy about what the P stood for and refused for years to let it be known - I told her to say "The national anthem" and, obviously, she took it to heart. It actually stood for "Phyllis", a name she apparently had no truck with. And, while confessions are in order, I did the art for the naked motorcycle rider - at Caryl's behest, of course. Not in a month of Sundays would I have ever considered such a drawing, byt Caryl was nothing if not persistent.

I am so happy to read everyone's wonderful remembrances of CP. I spent some time with her just prior to her death and was on my way back to Annapolis when I received word that she had died. I personally feel that she did it to avoid dealing with the tens of thousands of photos she had in boxes in her crawl space. I guess when she said I was to deal with her 'stuff', she meant ALL of it.

There are memorials and wakes planned for Annapolis, Austin and Philly and there will be a box(es)of photos which I hope will be from that era of her life. Your job will be to sort through them, laugh, cry, take or give so that they won't end up in a landfill but in the homes of people she loved.

There's also a call for some benefit concerts for her and for the hospice that took such great care with her in her last week of life. If anyone is interested in helping with this or her memorials/wakes, please contact me a [e-mail]. Thanks.

I called her up a couple of times in the last days to see if I could visit and just share some phone time, but she couldn't speak on the phone for more than five minutes, something that others said they experienced.

They had a benefit concert for me a few years ago, and she offered to sing buy the roster was full. She was a very supportive friend and we appreciated each other's crazy sense of humor.

At one time, after the Annapolis shanty sing had moved locations, she wanted it moved back to the original site. She went back there to sing and invited a few others, but I was the only one who showed, We had a wonderful night exchanging songs whether anyone else in the place was listening or not.

I remember one time at the Wheaton MD sing where I sat with her and a former teacher of hers that she still kept in touch with and great stories flowed all night.

I still have a copy of a little songbook of nautical material she used to sell that I got from her the first night I ever met her.

She had some stories of my late friend Al Grierson from her Austin days.

I hope I can get word of any services and memorial concerts or sings as they happen. She'll be missed by me and many others.

We remembered her at Mystic. Bonnie Milner talked about her great contribution to women and chantey singing at the first night's concert. I opened the final concert with a song we both loved and learned at the same time: "I Wish I Had Someone to Love Me." The audience sang they hearts out, bless 'em, and many remembered her from the previous year's festival.

This is very sad news. I did not know that Caryl was ill. She and I haven't been in contact during the past few years. We met in Jr High and were best friends though High School and many years after. Back in "the day" she took me along when she did her gigs and she taught me a lot about the music world. We used to hang out at The [old]Main Point in Bryn Mawr Pa, where she often took the stage and "sang for her supper."

I hope she is finally at peace. The world has lost a wonderful lady....

I remember her from the late sixties until now. She was one of my best friends and I've loved her since I met her. I backed her up on many occasions (Cherry Tree - Gene Shay - gigs - etc.) and (as she often said - not true) taught her some fiddle tunes learned from Doc Watson (also recently gone - we have to do something about this). I will miss her more than can be expressed, and one of the truly originals - musically, personally and humanly - is now gone!! I was supposed to go first, but you know Caryl!! Love You!!

It was July 24, 2009, according to my computer. Lisa and I drove over from Silver Spring to take her to lunch and she chose this place on the water with lots of boats.

There has been some mention on this post about people wanting to locate Caryl's recordings. Among other treasures I found going through her 'stuff' were cds and cassettes of most everything but "With Her Head Tucked Underneath Her Arm" (which is on the Twin Star Sampler) and a few 45s (!) of her recording of Bill Staines "Sampler Song". I'm also trying to see how many people might be interested in a copy of Caryl's last unreleased album, The Crabtown Chronicles. Just listening to a CD of Caryl's, as a widower I was moved by her tune 'This Old Bed'. I was hoping to find a video of it to share online with my widowed friends, and I discovered this news of her passing. Listening to her songs has always made me wish to hear her vibrant talent live. I'm saddened that I never will and, having lost somebody very close, I get that there are folks who now truly miss Caryl on a level that goes much deeper than the admiration of a fan.

Caryl and I grew up together and became close friends in High School. She was an amazing musician and sailor. We sailed the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia, many times, together. We were both guitarists and loved singing Duets...it was a good friendship. I will miss Caryl, but I will always have her music to remind me of the classy lady that she was. I can't figure out how I missed meeting Caryl, because it appears from this thread that our paths have crossed. I came across a video of her this afternoon, and then watched several. What a great singer! Wendy linked to a wonderful video up top. I'll give it again: click.

Back in the mid '60s, when I was working my way through college, I was an assistant manager for a book store and Caryl (still in high school, IIRC) would come in often. I let her use our copier free to copy her poems and we got to be good friends. We would sit outside the book store and I loved to hear her read her poems to me. We lost track of each other until many years later at the Philadelphia Folk Festival where she was performing solo and I was a volunteer. We bumped into each other through pure serendipity. We talked for hours behind one of the workshop stages and she told me all about Austin and her music career. She also told me that, back in Philly, she had had a mad crush on me (I'm dense about social cues, unfortunately, and missed a priceless opportunity [sigh...]) and that she had written a song dedicated to me that her band used to perform in Austin. She was GOOD people! I live in Jacksonville, FL, now and we have never restored contact. I just found out that I'll be relocating to Austin and tried to look her up. The first citation said she had left Austin for the Chesapeake Bay area and was recording a solo album. Tracking her further, I came across this page. It is with tremendous sadness that I learned of her death. I lost a good friend that I had let slip away many years ago. I will always miss the one I let get away.
