Help: New York

From: karen jonason

I am from England, visiting New York from 23rd - 27th October. I would love to visit a folk club during my stay. Please let me know of any venues during that period. Addresses, times etc. gratefully received. (I am not keen on C&W.)

Hi!

I hope you enjoy your stay.

23OCT - Sea Shanty Sing @ Seamen's Church Institute, 241 Water Street (near South Street Seaport), 8 - 11PM, all are welcome to sing.
23OCT - Irish Music Session @ O'Neill's Pub, 729 Third Avenue (near 45th Street), 9PM - 1AM, Brian Conway & Dan Milner.

The period during which you'll be here is not the best for folk events.

Take a look also at New York Pinewoods Folk Music Club.

All the best,
Dan MIlner

*grumble* of course, NY consists of a lot of territory OTHER THEN NYC - but why bother mentioning that? I'll just put my antiurbanocentric soapbox away now that I've made my mandatory grouse.

Hi Philippa!

In addition to folk music events, I suggest you go to the Metropolitan Museum... one of the wonders of the world!

Radio City Music Hall has just been restored.

There are a lot of interesting things to do Downtown. Strange as it may seem, The New York Stock Exchange is a very interesting place to visit. Nearby are Fraunces Tavern (where Washington bid farewell to his troops), the twin towers of the World Trade Center, South Street Seaport Museum and the ferry ride to Staten Island... which costs nothing and gives you a great view of the city and harbor.

Refresh this thread early in November and I'll let you know whether anything else is happening.

All the best,
Dan Milner

HI! This is Karen again, from England. Someone called Philippa has taken over my thread! Thanks for the suggestions while I'm in NY - city not state. If I go to the sea shanty club I may sing a feminist sea shanty I wrote.

These aren't really folk clubs per se, but they're my favorite music bars in New York, had to recommend them.

Paddy Reilly's on 2nd Ave at 29th Street features my favorites, the Prodigals, most Fridays at around 11 pm. They do Irish stuff but speeded up and rock and roll. They do a version of Spancil Hill to the tune of Ghost Rider in the Sky (sort of), and Some Say the Devil is Dead and Celtic Symphony plus some nifty originals.... Hard to explan, easy to dance to. Also there's Guiness on tap... can't go wrong... I think the cover is $5 but I never pay 'cause I'm sort of a fixture there. They have other bands there too that you guys might want to check out. (Yes, they're English friendly there :) )

Also there's Rocky Sullivans on Lexington near 29th Street which also has good music a lot, including my second favorites, Seanchai, which I babble about in some other thread.

write me if you want -- lorettagrace@excite.com -- I can recommend tons of neat stuff in NYC that doesn't neccesarily revolve around irish bands and beer. :)
