12 Jul 12 - 05:15 PM (#3375424) Subject: Origins: Up She Rises From: GUEST,Shantyjohn Just heard the song Up She Rises on Radio Newfoundland on the internet. A bit of a search brought it up on You Tube, by Bob Porter. It has appeared on two albums of his, first in 1997 on 'Wave The Flag' and then in 1999 on 'Our Piece of Ground'. Can anyone please direct me to a source where I can buy either or both albums? There is an American Bob Porter, but he's into jazz; you know how some people feel about Marmite, well I'm the same with jazz.. Many thanks Shantyjohn YouTube here - Up She Rises by Bob Porter on YouTube For pm's :- For pm's if anyone can help |
12 Jul 12 - 05:24 PM (#3375428) Subject: ADD: Up She Rises (Songwriter?) From: Joe Offer Here are the lyrics from the YouTube recording - is Bob Porter the songwriter? UP SHE RISES (Bob Porter) When she leaves safe harbour, Headed for the fishin' ground's unknown waters again; And you wave goodbye to the friends on shore, Steamin' with a northern wind. The waves they roll and the wind's pickin' up, And the night is comin' on fast; She turns her back to the island shore, Through the high waves she will blast. And it's Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, The water rolls off of her deck; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack. Oh, oh, up she rises, She's headed straight into the wind; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, She goes back down, but she rises again. In the morning the winds are calm, And the waters they glisten with the rising sun; The captain says all men on deck, There's a day's work to be done. We climb the rails, and we hit the deck, We've reached the fishing grounds at last. We work the day and hear the captain say, There's a windstorm coming up fast. When the catch is made, we steam for home, To a harbour safe and warm; Through a restless night we toss and turn, In the winds and waves of a storm. In the northern gale and a ten foot swell, She's a-cuttin' through the mighty sea; And the sound of a song is heard from below, The men you can hear 'em sing. Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, The water rolls off of her deck; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack. Oh, oh, up she rises, She's headed straight into the wind; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, She goes back down, but she rises. Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, The water rolls off of her deck; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, Guided through the sea by her captain, Jack. Oh, oh, up she rises, She's headed straight into the wind; Oh, oh, oh, up she rises, She goes back down, but she rises again. |
12 Jul 12 - 05:33 PM (#3375433) Subject: RE: Origins: Up She Rises From: WalkaboutsVerse The Drunken Sailor chorus has the lines "Hooray and up she rises". |
12 Jul 12 - 06:18 PM (#3375454) Subject: RE: Origins: Up She Rises From: Big Al Whittle A real sailor wouldn't say Hooray. Real men aren't given to spontaneous outbursts of merriment and expressions of exuberant joy. My father was real man and you wouldn't catch him shouting Hooray! |

12 Jul 12 - 08:29 PM (#3375505) Subject: RE: Origins: Up She Rises From: meself I learned it & have always sung it as, 'Way, hey ... '- which is something a real man, even a real sailorman, would shout in an unguarded moment. Although, come to think of it, my father was also a real man, and I can't say I ever did hear him shout 'Way, hey'. I did, however, hear him shout, 'I'll beat the living daylights out of yuh!' on numerous occasions. ('I'll tan your hide!' was a pithier alternative). |
12 Jul 12 - 09:19 PM (#3375519) Subject: RE: Origins: Up She Rises From: Beer Now there is a thread in what you have said "meself". GUEST,Shantyjohn that song was always in my repertoire when I had my Celtic group together. Was a fun song to do and sure wish I could sing it again. I can't help you in your quest but that is the only version I have heard. Adrien |

14 Jul 12 - 09:16 PM (#3376341) Subject: RE: Origins: Up She Rises From: Big Al Whittle perhaps just one of those great human paradoxes - things we are not really meant to fully understand - and yet far too important for us to completely ignore, as it concerns all of us, and touches every single life. |
