Lyr Req: He'll Have to Go; He'll Have to Stay; etc

Subject: female reply to song 'He'll Have to Go'
From: SingsIrish Songs

I have a vague recollection of hearing such a song years ago...when I was a kid...

I think it might have been the same melody--and definitely the female's reply to the song "He'll Have to Go" (ya know--Jim Reeves)..."Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone..."

Can anyone help me with the lyrics? Thanks muchly.

And my favorite is "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" by Kitty Wells--an answer to "Wild Side of Life" by Hank Thompson. There is also "Hello Fool" by Ralph Emery--in answer to "Hello Walls" by Farron Young

In the case of the Kitty Wells one. I like the answer better than the original--mostly because of the better instrumentation.

Subject: Lyr Add: HE'LL HAVE TO GO (Joe & Audrey Allison)
From: Jim Dixon

Looks like this has never been posted at Mudcat. It might as well go here.

HE'LL HAVE TO GO
(Joe Allison and Audrey Allison)

Put your sweet lips a little closer to the phone.
Let's pretend that we're together, all alone.
I'll tell the man to turn the jukebox way down low,
And you can tell your friend there with you he'll have to go.

Whisper to me. Tell me, do you love me true,
Or is he holding you the way I do?
Though love is blind, make up your mind. I've got to know.
Should I hang up, or will you tell him he'll have to go?

You can't say the words I want to hear while you're with another man.
If you want me, answer "yes" or "no." Darling, I will understand.

REPEAT FIRST VERSE

[A hit for Jim Reeves, 1960.]

Subject: Lyr Add: HE'LL HAVE TO GO (Homer & Jethro)
From: Jim Dixon

And now the parody: Lyrics transcribed from the sound file at http://www.geocities.com/u2page5/

HE'LL HAVE TO GO
(As sung by Homer & Jethro)

Put your big mouth a little closer to the phone.
Don't you try to tell me that you're all alone.
You only go out with your friends. You told me so.
But you don't have no enemies. You'll have to go.

The tomcat said, when he kissed the skunk, "Though it's been grand,
I've enjoyed all of this that I can stand."
You said you'd stick with me through thick and thin, I know.
The longer you stick, the thinner I get. You'll have to go.

When your mother came to visit us, she would knock, then knock again.
You and me would always have a fuss, 'cause I wouldn't let her in.

Oh, put your fat mouth a little closer to the phone.
Don't you try to tell me that you're all alone.
The man with you must be a navy man, I know,
And you can tell him the coast is clear now; he'll have to go.

[Recorded by Homer & Jethro on "At The Convention," 1962; "Humorous Side of Country Music," 1963; "Ooh, That's Corny," 1963; "The Best of Homer & Jethro," 1966 and 1996; and "Country Comedy," 1971.]

Well, we have the others, so I guess we ought to have the requested song for comparison. This is from the Cowpie link provided above.
-Joe Offer.

HE'LL HAVE TO STAY
Recorded by Jeannie Black/Lyrics by Charles Grean
(Original words and music by Audrey Allison and Joe Allison)

CAPO: 3rd Fret/KEY: Bb/PLAY: G
[G] I am glad you've finally [C] called me on the [G] phone
I've been waiting here tonight but not a-[D7] lone
You broke the [G] date that we had [G7] made just yester-[C] day [Am]
Now there's [G] someone else who's [D7] here, he'll have to [G] stay

I have found another love I know is true
And he holds me much more tenderly than you
Loving you's not worth the price I have to pay
Someone else is in your place, he'll have to stay.

Once I [C] loved you with all my heart
But [G] now I must say no
You [C] broke my heart too many times
So [G] now you'll have to [D7] go.

I can hear the jukebox playing soft and low
And you're out again with someone else, I know
My love was blind, i'm not your kind that's all I'll say
So you can hang up, I'm in his arms, he'll have to stay.

TAG: Now someone else is in your place, he'll have to stay.

Looks to me like all the original/answer pairs of songs listed above are from the country-and-western genre. I know there are plenty of similar sets of tunes in the rhythm-and-blues archives as well; I wish I could list a bunch of them off the top of my head, but can't.

"Annie Had A Baby," sometimes cited as the "first" R&B or R&R single, inspired at least one answer song, and there have been plenty of similar answers and follow-ups ever since. Anyone out there inclined to do the research?

Many (maybe most) of these answer songs were quickly and deservedly forgotten, but many others emerged as memorable in their own right, like "He'll Have to Stay." In a very few instances, the answer became a bigger hit and/or more memorable song than the original -- "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" by Kitty Wells is a good example. Murray, I'm sure you're not the only one who prefers that answer to the original that inspired it.

Ah, the culture of small town, small time people! So she's home and there's a man with her. It never occurs to him (or the parody writers) that the man could be her brother, her adult son, the plumber or a Jehovah's Witness on the porch. No, everything is about sex and jealousy.

Could the fact that he's calling from a bar have anything to do with it?

The original is a song open to different scenarios.

It could well be a female who's supposed to be singing the song in any case? Or, for that matter, it might be a male at both ends of the line...

leeneia, you say small town, small time people assume it's always about sex, that they never consider that the man with her could be her brother, her adult son, the plumber or a Jehovah's Witness on the porch.

Let's not US be too quick to jump to conclusions either.   In some regions, it might be one of those guys you mention and STILL be about sex and jealousy.

Well, the singer's being in a bar DOES have something to do with the state of the relationship in question, and I think we (the audience) are supposed to take that under consideration, whether or not the singer (i.e., the character he represents) is fully conscious.

I really don't think we're supposed to believe that the singer just happened to see a male person at the woman's house, and that he might be misinterpreting an entirely innocent and coincidental meeting. No, he's calling her and knows the guy is there even though he's elsewhere and can't see, because the guy is always there, or at least has been most evenings lately.

Which came first ~ the man's exile to a barroom, or the woman's taking up with another? Could be either way, which in turn would gtell us which partner is more to blame for thye break. Of course, it's almost always true that both share in the culpability.

Fer God's sake, Leenia--it's a COUNTRY song!! Those aren't small town, small time people, they're just flippin' COUNTRY!

You know what you get if you play a country record backwards? You get your truck fixed, your dog comes home, your girlfriend's not pregnant anymore, and your beer mug is full...

Carole King wrote an answer to the lovestruck Neil Sedaka's 'Oh Carol' which he wrote for her when they were both very young songwriters at, possibly, Capitol Records?
She used the same tune and, daringly, rhymed 'Sedaka' with 'chewing tobacco' ('terbacca', I think the approximate pronunciation was).
I only know this because I heard the record a few weeks ago for the first, and probably last, time.
I think she called the song 'Oh Neil', which would give it a strange pseudo-Irish quality.
Or perhaps not.
