From: ollaimh i have played a few for years visions of johanna is my fave, a great finger picking guitar song with great lyrics, followed closely by boots of spanish leather for the same reasons. the "you gott a lot of nerve"(it's got anothet title, thats the first line, because it addresses a lot of folkies. my back pages there are lots of others i have played ocasionally but those are the ones i have kept playing. |

In the early sixties there were frequent Hootenannies in school gyms and church basements. Before the shows all the performers would get together to be sure there were no duplications. I recall the biggest arguments were about who would get to do Don't Think Twice. |

It is not clear, and believe me I have looked, if it was a given name or one he adopted after his 1960's UK tours. As is commonly known Dylan collected English Folk Tunes and used them for his own songs. Apparantley he was most taken by English Morris Dance tunes and maybe that's where the name came from. He also used Morris tunes for some of his songs. I play "Black Joke" from Adderbury. A great tune - run through it and see if you can see how it was used for one of his songs. Cheers L in C# |

Didn't want to be pigeonholed. It was the hard way as learning other people's songs would've helped me make a better living at the time. Now, however the royalty checks quarterly tell me I made the right decision. Same w/John Prine, Jackson Browne, James Taylor, etc. While I learned a bit of their material and copped a few licks my sets were almost all original and traditional Celtic/British Isles, Appalachian, Delta blues, ragtime covers and old country chestnuts like El Paso, Wolverton Mountain or Saginaw, Michigan. Sounds like a tour schedule. :-) Also, I would cover songs by little known songwriters of the time. Tom Dundee, Al Day, Harry Waller, Kedall Kardt, Sally Fingerette, Jodi Alis, Mike Jordan, Mick Scott. All based out of Chicago. A friend gave me a book of Dylan lyrics a few years ago and I read it over and over for about a week. Made me realize that like the Beatles he didn't merely write songs he shifted culture. To attach words like brilliant or genius is like danming him w/faint praise. He'll be part of literature like Shakespeare, Tolstoy, Whitman, etc. Completely transcendent. |

I did Hard Rain on a "Dylan Night"; I got through the verses, spoken, in three minutes flat, then let rip on the very last line, which is of course ...And I'll know my song well before I start singing Then sang the last refrain, accompanied by the entire audience. Magical. Near misses: I've worked up Girl from the North Country and Idiot Wind for performance, but never actually sung them out. I recorded Percy's Song for 52fs, but it didn't come out very well. |

About the time that song came out, everybody and his pet turkey was singing Dylan songs. He had become a fad. I was prevailed upon by a young woman friend to learn the song, and she even lent me the record so I could. I sang it some, but I generally stuck to my traditional songs and ballads because, to me, that's what it was all about, and although I think Dylan wrote some good songs, I'm afraid I never became one of his horde of worshippers.
