The link is to a recording of me singing "My Little Castagnette", a short piece from The Desert Song.

Hi, Morwen -

I think I'd replace the recording - there's too much distortion and shuffling of papers to make it easy to listen to. But your singing on this one is very good, and the song seems to be more comfortably in your vocal range.

Joe: Sorry about the shuffling paper sounds. My mum was doing stuff, and everything I do in Audacity seems to to be distorted. Thanks. I might record it again.

Well, I haven't had problems with distortion in Audacity. You just have to watch the "scope" on Audacity to see where you're distorting, and adjust input volume accordingly. I usually record onto my Zoom Handy H2 recorder, and then load the recordings from the SD chip to the computer and then edit with Audacity.
Can't say I've had much experience recording with Audacity, but it's great for editing.
Now, if you're using a computer sound card and computer microphone for recording, you're doing yourself a disservice because they won't fit your dynamic range.

Joe: Thanks for the tip on the scope.

What equipment are you using to record, Morwen?

Just a computer microphone. I've just figured out how to record on GarageBand.

@Maeve: Thanks! Incidentally, just found out from my mum that we have actually got a pair of castanets. IMO it'd be great to be able to play them while singing this song.

Note: "My Little Castagnette" is the opening chorus of Act II, introducing Clementina and the ladies of the Brass Key from Barcelona. The women are spoils of war, and I've always seen this song as a song about homeisckness, "My little castagnette, never let me be forgetting my Spain." Any comments on my acting?

I listened to the kareoke recording and enjoyed it Morwen. You have a nice, clear voice. I still wish you could join a choir so you get more practice.

Dear Morwen, I agree with Leenia joining a choir or singing lessons would be useful. trying simpler material until you are really secure in terms of your range and hitting notes might be a good idea. Attenpting what are quite difficult pieces you seem to be trying to run before you can walk.
