23 Oct 99 - 04:27 PM (#127247) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: eric anderson's album about c From: Roger in Baltimore Wasabi, The CD of "Bout Changes and Things" by Eric Andersen is available through CD Now. Just click on the Picture of the leaping Catfish that says "Support the Mudcat". You will see several icons, one that says CDNow. Click on that. In the search box, type in Eric Andersen and it will take you to his CD's. Two of the songs from that CD are in the DigiTrad Data Base. Try typing in Andersen where it says Search the DigiTrad Database and you will get them. I believe you are new here, so if these instruction don't get you where you would like to go, just post another message on this thread and I or someone else will try to take you a step further. Hope you enjoy those "old" songs. Roger in Baltimore |
23 Oct 99 - 04:58 PM (#127251) Subject: Lyr Add: THIRSTY BOOTS (Eric Andersen) From: Roger in Baltimore Wasabi, Boy, are you in luck. I should be cleaning my house, but I have decided I can enhance your life (instead of my own) and have more fun if I give you some chords. These were modified from RUS (Rise Up Singing, a songbook) which also has Violets of Dawn. I know that song even less well than I do this one, so I won't attempt proper chord placement. Perhaps someone else will try.
THIRSTY BOOTS

31 May 17 - 04:32 PM (#3858182) Subject: ADD: Thirsty Boots (Anderson)^^^ From: Joe Offer Thread #102943 Message #2091548 Posted By: Rog Peek 01-Jul-07 - 09:49 AM Thread Name: Songs for/about Phil Ochs Subject: Lyr Add: THIRSTY BOOTS (Eric Andersen) THIRSTY BOOTS For comparison, here are the lyrics we have in the Digital Tradition: THIRSTY BOOTS (Eric Andersen) You've long been on the open road You've been sleepin in the rain From the dirt of words and mud of cell Your clothes are dark and stained. But the dirty words and muddy cells Will soon be judged insane So only stop and rest yourself Till you'll be off again. Then take off your thirsty boots And stay for awhile Your feet are hot and weary From a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh Maybe if I try I'm just lookin' for the evening And the morning in your eyes. But tell me of the ones you saw As far as you could see Across the plain from field to town A-marching to be free And of the rusted prison gates That tumbled by degree Like laughing children one by one Who looked like you and me CHORUS I know you are no stranger down The crooked rainbow trails From dancing cliff-edged shattered sills Of slender shackled jails But the voices drift up from below As the walls they're being scaled All of this and more my friend Your song shall not be failed. ---------------------------------------------------------------- Words and music by Eric Andersen, copyright 1965 by United Artists Music, all rights reserved. 31 May 17 - 06:55 PM (#3858208) Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Eric Anderson/Andersen songs From: Greg F. Joe- The lyrics you've posted at 31 May 17 - 04:32 PM are the "correct" ones from his recording, with the exception of The morning in your EYES. And of the RUSTY prison gates they LOOKED like you and me. I'd 86 the "version" in the DigiTrad. A case can also be made that this was ALWAYS written about Phil Ochs- who WAS a "civil rights worker". "Hills of West Virginia" was about a tip Anderson & Ochs took. Best, Greg P.S. - you could ask Eric; he's still with us, god bless him. |
31 May 17 - 09:37 PM (#3858230) Subject: ADD: Thirsty Boots (Eric Andersen) From: Joe Offer I listened to the Eric Andersen recording on 'Bout Changes 'n' Things, and reworked Rog Peek's transcription. My changes are in bold. Sorry, Greg, I don't agree with either of your suggested changes to Rog's transcription. I learned how to do verbatim transcription in Spy School, so I'm pretty good at it.... -Joe- THIRSTY BOOTS (Eric Andersen) You've long been on the open road, you've been sleeping in the rain. From dirty words and muddy cells your clothes are soiled and stained, But the dirty words and muddy cells will soon be hid in shame, So only stop to rest yourself till you go off again. CHORUS: So take off your thirsty boots and stay for a while. Your feet are hot and weary from a dusty mile, And maybe I can make you laugh, maybe I can try. I'm just looking for the evening, the morning in your eye. But tell me of the ones you saw as far as you could see Across the plains from field to town a-marching to be free, And of the rusted prison gates that tumbled by degree. Like laughing children, one by one, they look like you and me. CHORUS I know you are no stranger down the crooked rainbow trail, From dancing cliff-edged shattered sills of slandered, shackled jails, For the voices drift up from below as the walls they're being scaled. Yes, all of this, and more, CHORUS Yes, you've long been on the open road. you've been sleeping in the rain, From dirty words and muddy cells your clothes are smeared and stained But the dirty words, the muddy cells, they'll soon be judged insane, So only stop to rest yourself then you'll go off again. CHORUS Notes: Originally written about a civil rights worker this song was dedicated to Phil Ochs after his death. It first appeared on the album "'Bout Changes an' Things" (Vanguard LP VRS 79206) released in 1966. RP jul07 Original Eric Andersen recording: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KZdJmzKqMAE - first verse and last are slightly different 2011 Eric Andersen performance with Inge Bakkenes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hDutkXW4T-M - first verse is not repeated at the end, and it's like the final verse of the original. I like Inge's harmony. 2014 Eric Andersen performance with Michele Gazich & Inge Andersen (note that): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhlRYbAdya4 (is Michele the one with the beard and the fiddle? I think Eric refers to him as Oliver.) Note: Later versions have "all of this, and more, my friend, your song shall not be failed." in the third verse - it seems to me that this works better. Here's a recording by Eric Andersen and Judy Collins - and Arlo Guthrie: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q841UwxzMF0 |
31 May 17 - 10:11 PM (#3858233) Subject: ADD Version Thirsty Boots (Eric Andersen-Collins) From: Joe Offer I think many of us learned this song from the Judy Collins album on her Fifth Album, and the Digital Tradition transcription is very close to her version. Here's my transcription (differences from the DT are in bold): THIRSTY BOOTS (Eric Andersen - as recorded by Judy Collins) You've long been on the open road You've been sleepin' in the rain From the dirt of words and mud of cells Your clothes are dark and stained. But the dirty words, the muddy cells Will soon be judged insane So only stop to rest yourself And you'll be off again.
And stay for awhile Your feet are hot and weary From a dusty mile And maybe I can make you laugh And maybe I can try And the morning in your eye. Then tell me of the ones you've seen As far as you could see Across the plain from field to town A-marching to be free And of the rusted prison gates That tumbled by degree Like laughing children one by one They look like you and me CHORUS I know you are no stranger down The crooked rainbow trails From dancing cliff-edged shattered sills Of slandered, shackled jails But the melodies drift from below As the walls they're being scaled Yes, and all of this and more my friend Your song shall not be failed. I incorporated at least some of them in the texts. There are still some places I'm not 100% sure of, but they will be forever open to debate. -Joe- |
