From: GUEST,old git Just returned from holiday to find my original thread had been hi-jacked by a huge thread creep which may have put some people off commenting. So what were the highlights of your week? No personal attacks please! Here is my original posting.................. Back from a great week at Whitby...songs,beer and friends old and new...priceless! Thanks to everybody who gave "Icebound" such a great reception and sorry to all those who couldn't get in! I also enjoyed the rest of the week ,whether performing, MCing , running singarounds or just joining in impromptu sessions. Where did the week go? Here's to next year! Oh..and congrats to Jim and Graeme's maritime sessions for raising such a large amount for the Whitby Lifeboat. £3113!!! geoff t |

From: Ann N Highlights .... so many :) George Garside's melodeon workshops and tune sessions, the inimitable Scratch Morris, the Eurosessions, the music in the FILO, the huge choice of events to go to (a tardis would have been handy), the stalls at the Leisure Centre and the friendliness :D |

Whitby never fails to provide a diverse collection of music, dance, song and related folk events. Am I alone however in finding this year a bit quieter than previous events? My highlight was Wednesday afternoon firstly in the Station with Hissyfit and a few others followed by a session in the front room of the Black Horse. One of those rare, spontaneous, raucous, very, very amusing free for all events that will be long remembered. Oh, and we raised £133 for the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat on the Glaisdale trip! |

Roll on 2013, the spare room was snaffled for next year's festival as soon as my friends arrived for this one :) |

Bagpuss was fun! I enjoyed the Scottish concert in the Rifle Room on the Friday, or maybe it was Celtic? Ballads in the Conservative Club were brilliant as always. Plus lunchtime storytelling down at the Spa! |

From: Paul Davenport We had a great week and although we always enjoy performing at Whitby we were especially pleased to have a concert in the Coliseum, a lovely venue and a great asset to the festival. The Family concert on Thursday in the Spa Theatre was great fun too, great audience (as always at Whitby) |

From: Willa Crammed full; workshops with David Oliver, Joey Oliver, CMR, Robin and Carol, couple of evenings at the Folk Club, one at the Football Club, singarounds in the Endeavour and Rifle Club. Loved the concert with Eliza and Saul (and Martyn)and the Yorkshire Songs event, Steve's presentation at the Coliseum.....I know I've missed several other things! From: cujimmy I thoroughly enjoyed listening to the Shanties at the Endeavour on Monday, numerous visits to the Black Horse + Friendship Rowing club throughout the week, some great singing at Mo and Joes singaround (especially a rather naughty but hilarious song by Arthur) and a lovely walk along the old railway path to Robin Hoods Bay where the Dolphin hosted "half Day at The Bay" concert which included Robin Garside and Chris Miles and songs from people in the audiance. Yes it was quieter than last year but wish I could go back and do it all again. |

'Icebound' was superb, made more poignant as I've just read / TV watched about Ernest Shackleton's own and his supply missions, both of which were icebound and experienced the same problems and heroism. Hours and hours of excellent English music sessions, old time American, David Oliver's ceilidh band workshops, Hexham Morris session in the Middle Earth, melodeon net session welcoming me even though I'm from 'the other side' and play concertina, everybody friendly and lots of laughs. The feedback form has been completed and sent, the organisers have been emailed and told. Roll on 2013! And THANKS to everybody who helped to organise it. You brighten up my life. A list of tunes as long as yer arm to learn for next year.... Joy |

Just one suggestion for next year... at readarounds and singarounds, could organisers take names when people arrive and call on them in that order? This would avoid the situation of people arriving early only to find themselves at the end of a long queue or not being called on at all, when the organiser says "I think we'll go around the room anti-clockwise!" It's really frustrating to see people arrive late and then get a turn to perform before you! |

From: Mick Tems Just to tell everybody: Folkwales Online Magazine is out, with Mike Greenwood's Dancewales column focusing on Dawnswyr Aberesc's visit to Whitby (with pictures - our grateful thanks to Bill Rich.) Whitby Week is always fabulous; we saw the wonderful Melrose Quartet, Taffy Thomas, Alison McMorland and Geordie Macintyre, John Conolly, Pete and Sue Coe, Lynne Heraud and Pat Turner, Johnny Dyer & Vicky Swan, Nick Hennessy, John Kirkpatrick... we didn't see The Wilsons (although Tom popped in for a pint and a meal while we were in The Granby), Martin Graebe, Steve Gardham, our friend Alma, the breathtaking Grace Notes, Johnny Handle, Alistair Anderson and the Whitby legions of folkdom. We didn't ride the North York Moors Railway last year, but this year we spent our free day down at Whitby station, seated in a corridor carriage, as 4-6-0 The Green Knight and a Urie 4-6-0 took us all the way to Pickering - well worth the money! ...and I DO love fish and chips, for which Whitby excels. |

The building used to belong to my uncle and there was a listed Delft-tiled fireplace which has been ripped out and destroyed for no reason. Hang all Town and Country Planners! (Special thanks to the Rugby Club for the new showers at their campsite.) The clash with the Regatta made the streets rather congested for the first few days, but that was never more than a minor inconvenience - even though it made the re-routed Saturday parade rather a trudge for the dance teams. But in exchange for that we got the Red Arrows and a firework display. Of the numerous festival events (both programmed and informal)that I attended, every one was a winner. Here's to the next time. Workshops In tthe morning, sessions in the afternoon and Mo & Joe's singaround in the evening. I did go to Purple Acres on Tuesday Afternoon. It was very well done especially as two members were missing and a third was unwell. |
