29 Nov 12 - 05:13 AM (#3444179) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: GUEST,Eliza I feel very sorry for the poor woman who's lost her entire home after 26 years living there. I do hope she can get re-imbursed with insurance. Here in Norfolk, our coastline (particularly Happisburgh and nearby villages) is eaten away and homes fall into the sea periodically. But at least here it's been known about for decades and monitored regularly. This event in Whitby sems to have been a sudden shock for all concerned. And so near Christmas, in the winter weather. So sorry. |

29 Nov 12 - 05:27 AM (#3444185) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: Dave MacKenzie It shouldn't have been that much of a shock. According to Michael Portillo, Bradshaw's Guide mentioned Yorkshire coastal erosion in the first half of the nineteenth century. |
29 Nov 12 - 05:43 AM (#3444188) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: Jack Campin That is not coastal erosion, it's half a mile inland. Given how poorly that area is maintained I'd be suspicious of Yorkshire Water's involvement, as people in the area seem to have been. |

29 Nov 12 - 11:00 AM (#3444343) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: GUEST,leeneia It may not be on the sea, but it's still a very dangerous-looking, unstable slope. Homes should never have been built on a slope that steep. The link that Mo provided gives a view of fine, brown soil with large boulders in it. That's either glacial till or fill of some kind. Neither seems like good material for a cliff-top home. I feel sympathy for the poor woman who lost everything. |
29 Nov 12 - 11:21 AM (#3444359) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: Stu It looked to far back from the harbour mouth for it be behind The Endeavour, I was wondering if it was closer to Middle-Earth? |

29 Nov 12 - 02:38 PM (#3444449) Subject: RE: BS: Whitby landslip From: gnomad It is upstream of the Endeavour, SJ, but nothing like as far as Middle Earth. Come out of the Endeavour and turn left, about 4 doors along and through an inconspicuous arch, there's a set of seriously steep steps (about 128 if memory serves) up the side of the harbour, takes you up to Aelfleda Terrace. Some of us call 'em the kamikaze steps, or refer to Jude's many front doorsteps. There are easier ways to get there, but no vehicular access at all. We will all help out as we can, and Jude matters to the folks around here. The material stuff can be replaced, people cannot. |
