08 Dec 12 - 03:01 PM (#3449354) Subject: RE: Three Score & Ten Dirt Cheap From: John MacKenzie Well I'm really enjoying it. As I don't get to any concerts, and I never listen to folk progs on radio, some of the names I know only from the Living Tradition, have now become flesh (as it were), and I have discovered some really great songs and singers. The only time I get to hear and see new folks (to me0 is Whitby, which is now the only festival I go to. Interestingly, although I have a fair collection of vinyl and cassettes, there aren't very many duplicates of stuff I already have. |
09 Dec 12 - 09:07 AM (#3449720) Subject: RE: Three Score & Ten Dirt Cheap From: John MacKenzie That's it. I have now listened to all the tracks, and I enjoyed nearly all of it. Some stuff was inspiring, some was not quite to my taste, and there was only one track I had skip, because I couldn't stand it. I've discovered some great stuff, and been amazed that Ewan McColl EVER recorded that track! Well done Topic, good selection of tracks, and the theming of the CD's worked well for me. I recommend it whole heartedly. |
09 Dec 12 - 03:24 PM (#3449838) Subject: RE: Three Score & Ten Dirt Cheap From: GUEST,Fred McCormick John. I presume you're referring to 16 Tons. Not only did MacColl record that track for Topic, there is also a National Coal Board film of him singing it. Well, it was in the early days of the revival, at a time when MacColl, Lloyd et al were intensely concerned about revitalising workers' musical culture, but hadn't quite settled on how they were to do it. |
