The song is referenced in Sea Songs and Ballads from Nineteenth Century Nova Scotia, containing the manuscripts of William H. Smith and Fenwick Hatt. The book was edited by Edith Fowke. The editor cites a reference to the Thomas Raddall, who wrote a short story titled Blind McNair, in which Raddall cites some of the lyrics as part of a "sing-off" in a local forge in the 1870s. Would anyone know the melody? The version in Blind McNair and cited by Fowke begins ... "Come all you fine young fellows. I'm going to sing a song...." Also I did find a passing reference in The Fiddler's Companion to a tune called The Lake of Coolfin. "Cazden (et al, 1982) remarks that this tune shows contour and focal points matching his Catskill Mountain (New York) collected 6/8 time "The Bounty Jumper" and relatives.
