Lyr Req: I'm Going to Live the Life I Sing About..

This is the hymn sung by Joseph Spence on his '59 Folkways recording. As with most of his vocals on that great album not much is intelligible word-wise. Any help with these (or any other lyrics from that album) would be much appreciated . F

Lamarca, that was refreshing. This posting only was up there a day or two and it hadn't occurred to me that it could be revived as such. Thanks, F

Quite a long time back, Gogi Grant recorded an album of spirituals called "Shout!". One of the cuts began, "I'm gonna life the life I sing about in my song." It later says, "I can't go to church and shout on a Sunday, go out and get drunk and be a sinner on Monday." I don't know if this is the same song. I no longer have the album; but if you can find it, her words are quite clear and easy to pick up.

Allan, a belated thanks. That sounds like it might be the one from the few words by Spence I can distinguish.
I'm refreshing this in hopes someone has these lyrics or perhaps knows of a source for lyrics to other songs that Spence performed. Thanks.

From: GUEST,Michele in NM

Josh White recorded this song, GONNA LIVE THE LIFE I SING ABOUT, don't know if it's the same one:

Gonna live the life I sing about, down in my soul, oh yes, in my soul.
I'm gonna fight for the right and shun the wrong, shun the wrong.
Out in the street or in my home,
If I have company or if I'm alone,
I'm gonna live, live the life I sing about, down in my soul, oh yes, in my soul.

Every day, every day, on this bush thoroughfare,
People shun me, look down upon me. They don't like me. I don't care.
I can't sing one thing and try to live another,
Be a saint in the church and a devil under cover.
I'm gonna live, live the life I sing about, down in my soul, oh yes, in my soul.

There are two more verses in the Josh White songbook, and he recorded it on several records, esp. the 25th anniversary on Elektra. If you want the rest just ask.

Thanks for the verse, Michelle. From the snatches of it I can make out on the Spence record I think White's is the same lyric. If you get a chance to post the rest of it I'd really appreciate it.

From: Jim Dixon

Allmusic.com lists a song called I'M GOING TO LIVE THE LIFE I SING ABOUT IN MY SONG, attributed to Rev. Thomas A. Dorsey. It was recorded by Mahalia Jackson and several others. I found these lyrics at http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8065/life.html:

I'm gonna live the life I sing about in my song.
I'm gonna stand for right, always shun the wrong.
If I'm in a crowd, if I'm alone,
In the street, or in my home,
I'm gonna live the life I sing about in my song.

Every day, everywhere, on that busy thoroughfare,
Folks may watch me, some may spot me,
Say I'm foolish, but I don't care.
I can't go to church and shout all day Sunday,
Go out and get drunk and raise sin on the Monday,
I'm gonna live the life I sing about in my song.

Not for gold nor for fame, but the love of Jesus' name.
I must always walk the straight and narrow way.
Jesus promised me, one of these days,
He's gonna give me a crown of life.
Yes, I've got to live the life I sing about in my song.

Joseph Spence singing it there. Despite being re-mastered, it's still a bit difficult to comprehend.
