13 Jan 13 - 06:40 PM (#3465686) Subject: Woody Guthrie at Topic, Bradford From: Nicholas Waller Here's a promo for people in West Yorkshire: this coming Thursday 17th January 2013 Will Kaufman is presenting his travelling live documentary-cum-concert Woody Guthrie: Hard Times and Hard Travelin' at The Topic folk club in Bradford. The show sets Woody Guthrie's songs in the context of 1930s America – the Dust Bowl, the Depression, the New Deal and the state of popular music. Consisting of songs performed by Will and accompanied by visual images, it highlights the blending of music and radical politics that marks Guthrie's most powerful work. "I urge everybody to see the show and find out more about the man who inspired so many" – Ralph McTell In 2008 Kaufman was awarded the Woody Guthrie Research Fellowship, which enabled him to write the first political biography of Guthrie, Woody Guthrie, American Radical (2011). Here the Guardian reports on his accompanying tour. |

Guthrie at Topic, Bradford From: GUEST,Fred McCormick If you can make it to Bradford, make sure you catch this one. personally I can't say it told me much that I didn't know already. But it's a very fine discourse on one of America's most important native sons from one of the leading authorities on Guthrie. While you're at it, don't forget to buy the book. |
