I would like details on recordings by Stan Rogers that have the song Northwest Passage on it please. Any music/ABC's and/or chords would also find a good home. Many thanks Bev Lawton

I think the only recording of Stan singing it is on the album "Northwest Passage". If you go to this Web site http://www.summerfolk.org/srmain.htm, you can find lists of Stan's recordings, songs, recordings of his songs by other people, etc. Good luck!

Bev,

Welcome to the Mudcat Discussion Forum. If you are new (and I suspect you are), stay around a bit and read a few other threads that sound interesting. Be aware that this suggestion is like saying "try a little cocaine", it can lead to an addiction.

The lyrics (which you didn't ask for so I suspect you have them) and the chords are in Rise Up Singing. Many folkies have this book even if you don't happen to have a personal copy. But you might have to ask 'em 'cause if they have it becasue, just like Modern Maturity, they don't frequently don't leave it out where visitors might see it.

And if by chance you don't have the words, they are in the DT. Just type in [northwest passage] (and do include the brackets) and it comes right up. Sorry there is no tune. Many of the DT listings have melody lines you can play back on your computer.

I won't be surprised if someone posts and ABC version for you very soon. In fact, I'll be surprised if that doesn't havppen.

Enjoy the song!

Roger in Baltimore

Thanks for the help - I have been away from the Mudcat for a while but I have been around for 2 years now! I did get the words from the DT - I heard this song sung at the end of the last episode of Due South in the UK and it fits in with another I sing Lord Franklin. credits rolled past so fast I only got the name Stan fuzzy search in DT revealed the rest. A search at CDNOW only produced one hit without this tune on it. I was reccomended the Rise Up Singing book a while ago but can't get it in the UK - I will have to get it on-line somewhere. Many thanks for the links and info. Bev

Most of Stan's songs recorded during his lifetime are in the excellent songbook put out by OFC publications: heres on on-line source. Songs from Fogartys Cove

This book is an excellent intro to dadgad tuning which Stan used to great effect. Don't know if it has chords for Northwest Passage which of course was recorded in 3-part a capella. But I've found, since Stan's own versions of his songs tend to be "definitive versions" in order not to sound like a poor imitation, I like playing NW Passage as a DADGAD finger-picking ballad. The chords are fairly straightforward--if you need 'em, pick a key and i'll try to construct them for you.

Welcome! Bill

They played a recording of this over the credits of the last episode of the first series of Northern Exposure. I didn't know where it came from. I do now. Thanks.
