Well, I started out kinda rootin' for the 49ers but by half time had switched... Not because of the score but because I know folks in Baltimore but I don't know anyone in San Fran...

Baltimore Ravens Defeat San Francisco 49ers, 34-31, to Win Super Bowl
The Baltimore Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII, 34-31, by withstanding a determined second-half comeback by the San Francisco 49ers."

I do have to say that no-call on holding on that long pass was dubious and would have made all the difference. The Ravens strategy of sacrificing the safety points was brilliant.

It was the obvious call (the safety). Maybe a mod can combine this thread with the one that has been on here for months?

obvious, you mean like the roughing the passer when flacco was hit a yard out of bounds??? oh wait, that didn't get called, either.
sheesh... crybabies

Why do our American cousins insist on calling this game Football. During the course of the American "football" game the ball is only kicked with the foot occasionally. At such times a team member is brought onto the field of play to kick (with his foot) the ball. The rest of the time the ball is thrown by hand from one person to another.

There is a bit of a clue to the actual game of football played in the much of the world. The two words FOOT and BALL are combined to indicate that the BALL is played with the FOOT, hence FOOTBALL.

The rest of the world does have a game that the American "football" resembles and it is called RUGBY.

Perhaps you Guys and Gals over the pond could start a movement to rename your game.

Handball was already taken, Raggytash. Rugby and North American football are as alike as tennis and ping pong. And even football is a misnomer because the ball has an OAL of only eleven inches. We're fooked I tell you, fooked.

Well... how is it that the rest of the world who plays REAL 'football' calls lunging foot-first to try to steal the ball a 'tackle';>)?

A real tackle happens when a player is caught and dragged down or knocked over. I'm sure the Baltimore Ravens would be glad to demonstrate the difference to Manchester United. *grin*

Just to clarify... American football was named when there was a lot more kicking of the ball. Some players were experts at "drop kicking", similar to what is done on Rugby at times.
That fancy forward pass thing was kind of a surprise when it was used in about 1906, and the rules were changed several times as they tried to decide how to fit it into the game.

Thanks, Bill, for producing the sweet sound of reason.

The DH and I decided to go out for dinner yesterday, (3 pm) and the first four restaurants we went to were 'closed' for the annual staff party. We were told that it made sense to have the staff party on the slowest day of the year, Superbowl Sunday.

(This was all news to us.)

We had a lovely dinner at the fifth place, and we liked it so much I'm sure we'll be going back.

I've heard that US football--or whatever you want to call it--combines the worst of American culture:    senseless violence punctuated by committee meetings.

But any sport that gave us "Dropkick me, Jesus through the goalposts of life" can't be all bad.

I was at a bluegrass gig during the "big game" and tried to get the band to do it.   They like the song but weren't ready.    A terrible missed opportunity.

If you compare the FA Laws of 1863 with the Melbourne Football Club Laws of 1858, you might come to the conclusion that Soccer is derived from Ausie Rules.

I might be wrong, but isn't Baltimore the only city to have won championships with 3 Pro Football teams: the Colts, then the Stallions (Grey Cup) and the Ravens (twice)?

1858 .............Hmmmm I think if you read up about Mary, Queen of Scots 1542-1587 you'll find that she was fond of the game of Football and it is rumoured that Henry VIII 1491-1547 owned a pair of Football boots.

Sorry Lads but when it come to history Australia and America are somewhat lacking and the UK is somewhat lacking when compared to many other older civilisations.

Welcome back, Raggy. Long time, no read.

The call it Football because all of the contenders are on foot...duh.

The reason for Henry's boots was to kick the heads of his various wives about the field.

In 1837 Swarthmore College (a Quaker school) "played" a game against Harvard College in which an ovoid bladder was kicked, carried and thrown so that one team could carry it over a goal at the end of the field. The Swarthmore team was composed of 200+ pound students, each of who was a farmer and could push a plow through a furrow without a horse or mule hitched. The Harvard team consisted of players whose greatest feat was to lift a mug of beer while singing "We are poor little lambs." Swarthmore won 77-1 (a pity goal allowed by Swarthmore) and Harvard named the new game "We're f***ed ball" because of the times the Swarthmore team ground them into the mud of the playing pitch and ran over their backs to score. Over the years this was shortened and made more acceptable in the drawing rooms and parlors of society, eventually becoming the game now known in the US and elswhere as "football."

Once again, a mastermind spins a yarn so sweet it's almost honey. Thanks for the laffs, Rap.

Yankee football shouldn't be called football if one can touch the ball one's upper appendages? Gee... where have I heard that before?... a thousand times.

For anyone who hasn't read countless threads herein about such matters, I shall state, yet again... I like em all but Yankee football is the best because it is as much a game of chess (perhaps moreso) as it is a game of physical prowess and it involves and engages it's fans far more than any other. It is, indeed, the ultimate sport. Short of warfare.

There is no joy in Mudville.....

Word has it that many Californians stayed home sick today. I hear there was hardly any traffic on the freeways in Sacramento this morning.

Myself, I can't say I watch much football. We took a nice hike in the woods during "The Big Game." I did watch a few minutes, though. Then I got distracted and did something else.

Couple of thoughts...

First, will a whacked out 49er fan be found to have played a part in the blackout???

Second, I agree with Amos about the safety... I was telling the P-Vine just before Baltimore elected to purposely take the safety that that is exactly what they should do... She didn't get it and then, bam, it happened... I felt vindicated...

Third, how about going back to leather helmets??? Players feel invincible with the ones they have now and if they knew that by leading with their heads was going to cause them pain then they would adjust their technique???

Fourthly and lastly... Pocket QBs v. Option QB's... What's your opinion???

They got seriously injured in the days of leather helmets, too.... there just wasn't video and 40 channels of news programs to document and list it all.

When 300lb. guys grab 185lb. guys and run into them and fall on them, stuff is gonna happen.

"...if they knew that by leading with their heads..."

There are rules governing such and they are strictly enforced,,, even if not called during the game. A fine/suspension may be imposed.
Subsequent infringement can carry more severe penalty.

"Pocket QBs v. Option QB's... What's your opinion???"

A QB and a team who can't do both is limited and there are lot's of both that can. So it goes a lot deeper that just that question... all the way to leadership, respect and even if the QB can tell a good joke... hell, it's far more complicated than pocket or option.

It will come to the point where all the QBs will be mobile, a running threat who can pass on the move and have a strong arm. Kids will be selected and trained that way from now on. Its been trending that way for some time.

I agree, Jts...

The down side is that these QBs won't last much past 26-27 years old... You won't have 35 year old QBs...

My friend Raptor is a huge 49ers fan. He must have been devastated by their loss to Baltimore on Sunday. I saw him today, mentioned that I'd heard his team had lost, and he said, "I don't want to talk about it."

He has a little stuffed 49ers bear...I think it's a Beanie Baby. It was lying comatose on a nearby counter top, staring at the ceiling with glazed eyes, obviously in a state of shock.

I tried to get the bear to talk about the game too, and got no response at all.

The 49ers football helmet thingie that holds chips and dip which you can eat while you watch the game sat forlornly on the counter. It was empty.

The 49ers flag that normally flies proudly in the front yard is now at halfmast.

The several 49ers 6" tall action figures of famous players on top of the TV all had their faces turned to the wall.

Why someone living in Ontario, Canada would be a 49ers fan, I don't know. It puzzles me. I don't get it. But then, I know very little about football. I'm sure Raptor has his reasons for loving that team, and I trust he will recover soon and pin his hopes on their chances in the next season.

I have a question. As I mentioned before, I didn't watch the game. So tell me, what did the broadcasters do during the unexpected 20 minutes with lights out and no play?

To me, that would be a real nightmare. Somebody saying, "Millions of people are watching and there's nothing to see. Do something!"

What did they do?

(I've searched online and not found the answer.)

The two minutes (it felt like 2 minutes) between when the power went out to the broadcast booth while they were just panning the cameras around showing the lights, both on and off and confused players and coaches was among the best sports coverage I have ever seen. It made me wish I had a mute button on my tv which only cut out the jabbering jocks and just take in the game with the ambient noise.

Do what I do, Jack. You can turn the volume down to the point where you can't hear the announcers but you can still hear the sound of the crowd. I don't watch spots much, but when I do that's how I do it.

But I still want to know what they did in the 20 dark minutes.

The P-Vine is always telling me to shut up during football games 'cause I am like a born annalist... I especially get on defenses... I mostly yell at linebackers and DBs...

Then the P-Vine asks me why this or that happened and I do X's and O's or set stuff up on the table... She likes that part... Just not the yelling...

BTW, she really impressed her sons a few years back at Thanksgiving when she commented that she commented on a game saying, "These guys should get out of that zone and play man"... Her sons all looked at each other with that "Oh shit, mom knows more than we do about this game"... It was funny...

Nobody will tell me what the broadcasters did to get through the unexpected 20 minutes with no play. Y'all probably don't know. You weren't really watching the game.

In a movie, a sweet young thing who's trying to make it in show biz as a minor member of Beyonce's show would step up and wow the crowd. That probably didn't happen.

Oh well. I tell my husband that there are only 800 people left who watch television, but he doesn't believe me.

Sorry Leeneia,

Thought you were joking.

For one thing, it was 34 minutes, not 20.

Keep in mind that we the viewers did much as bobert and occupied ourselves otherwise. But from what I saw the announcers did what they usually do during delays. They engaged in pointless speculation about the rest of the game and gave situational updates every few minutes which were mostly useless speculation about when the lights would come on.

The players milled around on the field. It being New Orleans, it is likely that the fans mostly drank.
