Lyr ADD: Living Above My Station (Martin Mull)

I'm looking for a song called Living Above My Station - I think this is a music hall song, but it may be burlesque (the American version of music hall, always pronounced by its practitioners 'burleskew' - a friend of mine in the 60s told me of visiting New York from his Hollywood home, and meeting old friends from the great days who would say "Burleskew will be back". All wrong, alas) - anyway, this song concerns a boy of good family who marries a poor girl and they buy or rent a petrol station, and now he is delighted to be "living above my station". A charming song.

I'm wondering if it's this, by Martin Mull, and I've misremembered the story a bit.

LIVIN' ABOVE MY STATION
Written by Martin Mull
As sung by Martin Mull on "Martin Mull," 1972

1. Well, I never been to college; I barely finished seventh grade.
That don't make me worse nor better; I'm just made the way I'm made,
Workin' hard at what I'm good at: pumpin' gas an' fixin' cars.
I like the smell o' gasoline and I don't mind passin' bars(?).
Paid my dues by workin' places where the owner's hands was clean
Ain't no Christian thought erases how he treated me so mean
But I done the things he asked me, an' I smiled right to his face,
'Cause I knew that in a year or two I's gonna own that place.

CHORUS: And I kept my dreams within my reach an' ever' one came true,
'Cause when you stick to what you're good at, good things come to you,
An' now I'm happy here livin' above my station.
I ain't jokin' when I say that it's a gas.
Come and fill your tank up downstairs at my station,
Then y'all come with me upstairs an' get your glass.
You'll see I'm happy here livin' above my station.
I got no complaint at all about my life,
'Cause there's just one way to live above your station,
And that's with your friends an' Doctor Pepper and your wife.

2. Well I got friends back in Wyomin' where I spent my pearly days,
Livin' lives like Willie Lowman, losin' sleep to get a raise.
In pursuit of some big fortune they go runnin' on ….(?)
Don't they realize that happiness is just bein' who ya are?
Now I hear them talk about me; I can hear the things they say:
That I could have been a doctor or a lawyer in L.A.,
But I tell them 'bout that carpenter whose greatness fills us all,
And they realize that in his eyes no dream is ever small. CHORUS

Just figured out the fourth line of the first verse.... "and I don't mind patchin' tires".

I think the first line of the second verse is "spent my early days".

Thanks for the transcription. I just love this song. :)
