13 Mar 13 - 05:33 AM (#3489854) Subject: Lyr Req: Irish song Cruisein Lan From: Genie I have an audio file of The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makesinging the Irish song "Cruisein Lan," but I would like to see the lyrics, both in Irish Gaelic and in a sort of 'phonetic transcription' of those lyrics, and a literal (not "singable") translation. If you can help, thanks so much. I love this song and would like to learn it. |

Curfa Liam posted this on his website. He got the lyrics from an old fisherman in Ring, Co. Waterford, where he lives; and his son-in-law wrote out the words, but alas, not the translation. July 27 2009, 22:31 PM http://www.wakethebard.com/news.html I got this online but the words in English are different to the Irish. Cruisceen Lan ("The Little Full Jug") Let the farmer praise his grounds, Let the huntsman praise his hounds, Let the shepherd praise his dewy-scented lawn, But I, more wise than they, Spend each happy night and day With my darlin' little cruiscin lan, lan, lan, My darlin' little cruiscin lan. chorus: O Gra mo chroi mo chruiscin Slainte geal mo mhuirnin Gra mo chroi mo chruiscin lan, lan, lan, O Gra mo chroi mo chruiscin, lan. Immortal and divine, great Bacchus, god of wine Create me by adoption your own son In hopes that you'll comply That my glass shall ne'er run dry Nor my darlin' little cruiscin lan, lan, lan, My darlin' little cruiscin lan. (Cho.) And when grim death appears In a few but happy years He'll say, "Oh, won't you come along with me?" I'll say, "Begone, ye knave, For king Bacchus gave me leave To take another cruiscin lan, lan, lan, To take another cruiscin lan. (Cho.) Then fill your glasses high, Let's not part when lips are dry For the lark now proclaims it is dawn, And since we can't remain, May we shortly meet again To fill another cruiscin lan, lan, lan, To fill another cruiscin lan. (Cho.) (And I have no clue where the punctuation goes in the Gaelic parts! - Genie) |
14 Mar 13 - 02:11 AM (#3490105) Subject: Lyr Req: Irish song Cruiscín Lán From: Genie From "The Clancy Brothers & Tommy Makem: Come Fill Your Glass With Us," album (The Tradition Records, originally recorded in 1959, re-released in 1998): The Gaelic chorus of Cruscin Lan (My Little Full Jug)" means: Love of my heart, my little jug, Bring health, my darling. The chorus written 'phonetically' to the English/Americans is as follows: Oh, graw moh kree moh krooshkeen Slawnta gal Mohvoorneen, graw moh kree moh krooshkeen lawn, lawn lawn, graw moh kree moh krooshkeen lawn, Let the farmer praise his grounds, Let the huntsman praise his hounds, Let the shepherd praise his dewy-scented lambs. But I, more wise then they, spend each happy night and day With me darling little cruiscín lán, lán, lán, With me darling little cruiscín lán. Chorus Oh, gradh mo chroide mo cruiscín Slainte geal Mauver-neen, Gradh mo chroide mo cruiscín lán, lán, lán, Oh gradh mo chroide mo cruiscín lán. Immortal and divine, great Bacchus, god of wine, Create me by adoption, your own son In the hope that you'll comply that my glass shall ne'er run dry Nor me darlin' little cruiscín lán, lán, lán, Nor me darlin' little cruiscín lán. (Chorus) And when grim death appears In a few but happy years, He'll say,"Oh, won't you come along with me? "I'll say, 'Begone, ye knave, for King Bacchus gave me lave For to fill another cruiscín lán, lán, lán, For to fill another cruiscín lán.'" (Cho.) So fill your glasses high, Let's not part with lips so dry, Though the lark now proclaims it is the dawn, And, since we can't remain, nay we shortly meet again To share another cruiscín lán, lán, lán, To share another cruiscín lán? Chorus... |

15 Mar 13 - 12:18 PM (#3490736) Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Irish song Cruisein Lan From: GUEST,Beachcomber Genie I too love this old song even though it does extol the pleasure of alcohol. I have attempted a translation keeping as close to the original text meaning and meter as possible. I have added a phrase and a few words just to make up that meter. See if you like it and perhaps you can learn it quickly enough to sing on "The Night" ? 1 The two Johns and this John, went over to the fair, they started up a row there that was difficult to repair, They broke each other's heads and the woman of the Tavern was the one who minded my bald pate as shiny as a sovereign. And I'll find my little jug again and that 'll be grand. Cho. I'll take my little jug again, Here's health my little love again, It minds me not though her sweet head be fair or dark or curled, I will take again my little jug and that 'll be grand. 2. My wife I sent to Cashel, selling apples there you see, Two sales of half a penny was all she brought back to me, Aren't I a pity to Mary now, walking the country oér, Searching for that same ould flirt for whom her home's too poor But, I'll take my little jug again and that'll be grand. 3. My blessings now I'm leaving to the people of this house, For here they be both young and old, (with them I have no grouse) And never will I tire of them and their company so jolly 'Till through the roof of this old place will grow a bush of holly. And I'll take my little jug again and that 'll be grand. SING OUT And the blessings of St.Patrick be with you :) |
