Lyr Req/Add: The Old Man (Phil Coulter)

I am looking for the lyrics of a song I heard years ago from an Irish folk group, entitled, I believe, The Old Man. I remember it as the memories of a son or daughter about his or her father, that had recently died.

The father of a friend of mine died in an accident, and I would like to share this song with him.

THE OLD MAN
(Phil Coulter)
As recorded by Phil Coulter on “The Songs I Love So Well” (2000)

The tears have all been shed now.
We've said our last goodbyes.
His soul's been blessed; He's laid to rest,
And it's now I feel alone.
He was more than just my father,
My teacher, my best friend,
And he'll still be heard in the tunes we shared
When I play them on my own.

CHORUS: And I never will forget him,
For he made me what I am.
Though he may be gone, mem'ries linger on,
And I miss him, the old man.

As a boy, he'd take me walking
By mountain field and stream,
And showed me things not known to kings
But secret between him and me,
Like the colors on a pheasant
As he rises in the dawn,
Or how to fish or make a wish
Beside a fairy tree. CHORUS

I thought he'd live forever.
He seemed so big and strong,
But the minutes fly and the years roll by
For a father and a son,
And suddenly when it happened,
There was so much left unsaid--
No second chance to tell him thanks
For ev'rything he'd done. CHORUS

Enjoy, Gudrun !
Regards,
Alisdair

Hi Gudrun ! Hi Dick !!

YES !!! It is sung wonderfully by Mr. John McDermott, available on one of his CD's ... are you in Canada ? He is Canadian ... got to YAHOO and search his name, there is a Fan Club. They may have the music, or know how to get it. I'm sorry I don't. The entire CD is fantastic !!! Traditional Scottish and Irish music !!! Dick, I couldn't see anything regarding copywrite, and it didn't indiicate who wrote it on the CD, but I am a Scientist and do not not know a THING about copywrites or laws or the like !!!

Sorry I couldn't be of more help !

Alisdair

Actually the song was written by Phil Coulter for the Furey Brothers in memory of their father, Ted Furey.

All the best,

Mick
