BS: Jim Carrey & The Cold Dead Hands of FOX

Subject: BS: Jim Carrey & The Cold Dead Hands of FOX
From: GUEST,Gern

Anybody see Jim Carrey's video "Cold Dead Hands?" It's a spoof of Charlton Heston, country music and self-righteous gun owners, set as an episode of Hee-Haw. I know, I hate Jim Carrey too--even in serious roles, I'm afraid at any moment he might goof out and sing out his ass, but this is well done. It's clever, funny and the song he sings is spot-on satire. But this video is suddenly getting harder to find. On You Tube it's buried under a deliberate mound of FOX News commentary. The whole network teams up to trash Carrey's "cultural intolerance"(don't miss the irony here) and picking on a dead and formerly crotchety Alzheimer's patient. I think FOX folks are really shaken by this criticism and are fighting back with some corporate censorship. Any other thoughts on this?

Great stuff!

BTW, I don't hate him. I think he's an extremely talented man in every way from... nevermind... in every way. I know many don't like him pushing the envelope BEYOND the absurd to the WTF is that? but that is exactly why he makes the UNREAL coin that he makes. His successes FAR outweigh his failures. Even Ted Williams didn't land every salmon he hooked. Played baseball pretty good too, I heard.

This should be the whole thing on the site that produced it.

This is the whole thing at Huffington Post. Looks like Jim Carrey (and Ghandi, Lennon, Clearly Sam Elliot and others) but sounds a lot like the Austin Lounge Lizards. I think it's funny AND good.

Sean Hannity and Ann Coulter review Carrey's video:

"Coulter and Hannity opted for some tried-and-true complaints. Among them: Why are you only allowed to make fun of Southerners and Christians? Why do these wealthy people keep insisting that regular folks not carry firearms? Why are the rich elites trying to monopolize on guns and ammo? And so on, and so forth."

Perhaps my expectations were raised too high by the praise for this video earlier in the thread.   If Fox is attacking it, that's clearly a waste of their energies.    It's a bit over the top, to put it mildly, that anybody should get exercised about it--either on a positive or negative basis.

There's a difference between a sledgehammer approach and effective satire.   Americans are famous for not being able to tell the difference--and this seems to be a case in point.   Understatement, for which the British are famous and we are not, is often far more effective.

Anybody who thinks my criticism means I endorse the NRA is invited to read my postings on gun control.

But in humor, often less is more, and that's not Jim Carrey's forte. Obviously this is a matter of taste and Carrey's approach has many supporters--as witness his huge box office success.

I thought Jim Carrey has had some amazing performances....such as his portrayal of Andy Kaufman in Man in the Moon.

And I love The Eels....(although how can one call this "The Eels" without Mark Everett.

But I tend to agree with Ron Davies about this video. It's a 'sledgehammer' rather than effective satire.   But it's great to see that it's getting such a reaction from the gun-nuts.

Like I said, Carey pushes the boundaries. He plays to all audiences (AND BEYOND), as any performer must do in certain situations, without attempting to target any particular segment of the audience but, rather, the largest part of the audience he can play to. Any performer worth his weight in salt does the same. You can't produce satire for Dumb, Dumber and Dumbest or Smart, Smater and Smartest... ya gotta go with dumber or the smarter and hope to hit the middle as accurately as possible when you play to a wide audience. No? Surely most in this here Café, at least among the performers of whatever sort, understand what it takes to entertain the widest audience possible???

Hmmm... if your marquee says Traditional New England Sea Shantys then all the patrons who enter will be entertained. If it says New England Folk Music and you sing too many shantys, expect someone to write a bad review. Is that a better explanation?

Subject: RE: BS: Jim Carrey & The Cold Dead Hands of FOX

IMHO Jeri is right on the money.
Gnu is onto some of it.

If you have to say that it is "social satire" twice in the song, then it may be social satire but it also may be something else entirely.

No wonder Sean Hannity has his girdle in a twist.
Mr. Carey is reverting to his comedy roots for this one, the broad parodies and violent slapstick of his "fire Marshall days. As propaganda, it is genius. He is going after the most important demographic to the future of the NRA. He is appealing directly to preteen and teenaged boys by redefining and repurposing that icon of the movement. Mr. Charlton Heston.

I wouldn't be surprised at all if Carrey's next release features Wayne LaPierre talking out of his ass. Which would be closer to documentary than parody. But Carrey is the man with the resume to do it.

Look at that Fox News, where talking heads speak without moving their lips

Why do people watch it? Insanity wears such a flimsy disguise
And spouts right wing lies

All the stupid people,
Where do they all come from
All the stupid people
They've found where they belong

Interesting.    Jeri's contribution just above is not exactly subtle either--but for some reason it works a lot better than the video.    Course I do love parodies of specific songs a lot more than supposed parodies of a style, so that might have something to do with it.

Your parody is just great, Jeri.   Is it yours?

I was just talking to my brother-in-law, a stalwart of the Tea Party, about an event that happened in 1775 and he brought up the Monitor and Merrimac. I couldn't figure out why he did.   I asked him if he knew the Monitor and Merrimac were after 1775.   When he didn't answer I asked him if he knew which came first, 1775 or the Monitor -Merrimac.   He said he didn't know.   i'm pretty sure he was serious.

These Tea Party types are real winners.

Pedant alert!!

For those who may be in doubt, the battle between the Monitor and Merrimack occurred on March 9, 1862, during the Civil War. It was a naval engagement that occurred at Hampton Roads, Virginia, a harbor at the mouth of the James River, and was notable as history's first duel between ironclad warships, and the beginning of a new era of naval warfare.

Illustration.

It had nothing to do with the American Revolution. OR the "Boston Tea Party," which, presumably, the "Tea Party" considers itself to be a modern version of.

Every kid who stayed awake in their high school American History class knows that. So. . . .

"preaching to the choir..."    Amen, brother.   But I'm not the one who found the skit so wonderful (in large part since it reflects your own point of view).

And perhaps you'd like to explain how a clumsy video parody can be productive of any desired change.   All it does is solidify the well-known battle lines. If you know any pro-gun rights person whose mind was influenced in the slightest by this feast of stereotypes by one of the country's current favorite clowns, please tell us.

I think we may have a long wait.

Because teenage and preteen white boys will watch it because they like that kind of humor and when their gun toting uncles talk about the "great" Charlton Heston and his leadership of the NRA, they will snicker. If their family hunts they might still be pro-gun. But they might not buy into the "cold dead hands argument" or the need to have a 30 round clip AR-15.

Mr. Carrey isn't talking to you. He is talking to the kids who read Mad Magazine and watch Tosh 2.0.

I'm not saying this video will be the thing that breaks the back or the NRA, but it certainly it undermines some of its basic arguments and iconography.

When Joe assault rifle, tells his grandson about Heston, this video will run in the back of the kid's mind.

"run in the back of the kid's mind".    You hope.

I think you may be engaging in fond self-delusion (not for the first time).

Kids have no idea who Charlton Heston is and never did think Hee-Haw was cool.   The few kids who actually handle firearms and also see this video will think:    "What a bunch of idiots.   This is nothing like the way me and Dad handle guns."

This video is likely to accomplish precisely nothing except make a few liberals feel good about themselves (certainly a desperate need) ---which you would realize if you were able to see it through objective eyes.

I can only speak for myself (and those who try to do otherwise often look like dumbshits), but I just though it was funny. I thought the impersonation was funny. I thought the physical stuff was funny. I especially thought the making-fun-of-intentionally-stupid-people was funny.

I think debating the higher purpose of the video and critiquing its effectiveness is funny, too. Mostly because it's stupid, and stupid that doesn't harm anyone is funny.

You have to laugh. If you don't, you wind up as bitter and doggedly adversarial as some of the perpetually fighting shitsacks around here.
