Is there a suicide epidemic? I think no family is safe.

He's with Jesus now, so isn't he better off? Besides, its God's will - not ours to question.

It's a tragedy whenever a family loses a child, but especially when the child commits suicide. Matthew Warren was 27, son of Pastor Rick Warren (Rick Warren is author of The Purpose-Driven Life.

I'm sure Rick Warren is too conservative for many of us, but he's one of the more reasonable megachurch pastors. He has tried to involve evangelical Christians in social justice issues and service to the poor. That's not something we liberals can do, because we're not in a position to communicate with evangelical Christians in a way that they can accept.

May Matthew rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in their loss.

Warren has enough rational ability that he turns up on NPR and PBS in the role Joe describes. I am no fan of Warren or his religion, but from some of the nasty remarks on facebook I am eqally repelled by the trolls who are gleeful at his loss.

too right-some people just dont seem to have any decency or compassion.those of us that have lost family in such circumstances know how distressing it is.maybe the moronic remarks were made by those never affected by a suicide.

And not just on Facebook, as witness the second post on this thread.

Both progressive thinkers and conservatives should be capable of compassion whenever tragedy strikes. There are times when one's political or social position might influence tragic circumstances but our society is strongest when human compassion transcends social and political agreement. Sympathy for the Warren family at this time should be natural and sincere.

The coroner hasn't released the means of committing the act as of this post.

Well, I may be jumping the gun here (no pun intended) but if he shot himself, as many mentally ill people do, then maybe a background check would have prevented this... I donno???

No matter... Suicide is such a painful thing for family and friends to deal with... I'm sure everyone here knows at least one, if not several, who have committed suicide...

My heart goes out to his family and friends...

"if he shot himself, as many mentally ill people do, then maybe a background check would have prevented this."

There are plenty of other ways. If he shot himself a gun didn't make him do it.

Lets stick with this.

"May Matthew rest in peace, and may his family find comfort in their loss."

I agree, Jack. But while we feel compassion for the suffering, we should also be asking, "How can this prevented in the future?"

Now about that smart-aleck, puerile 2nd post. It's a good place to apply my chron-psych method of analyzing posts. The post was made at 8 in the evening, Mudcat time. Mudcat time is the U.S. Eastern time zone. Mudcat regulars probably know that that person is in the British Isles somewhere. (That has about a 92% probability, I'd say.) Time there is five hours ahead, so that post was actually typed at one o'clock in the morning.

Why was it posted at 1 a.m.? Is the poster feeling the negative effects of a night in the pub? Is insomnia messing up his mind? Is the boredom incidental to friendlessness driving him to acts of pure malice?

Or all of the above? Whatever the case, posts made in the wee hours of the night are often both irrational and unreasonable.
