Looking for lyrics for Mammy's Little Baby Loves Shortenin' Bread.
My 5 year old grandson/granddaughter(twins) in Denmark have requested this.
Any help would be appreciated.
Send all info to my e-mail as well.
Thank you.

Chorus: Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’, short’nin’
Mama’s little baby loves short’nin’ bread - twice.

Verse 1: Put on the skillet, put on the lid,
Mama’s gonna bake a little short’nin’ bread - twice.

Verse 2: Two little babies, lying in bed,
One was sick and the other ‘most dead.
Called for the doctor, the doctor said,
"You gotta feed them children some short’nin’ bread."

This should be a start anyway.

HTML line breaks added. --JoeClone, 11-Feb-02.

I was WRONG. The verse goes like this:

Stole the Skillet, Stole the led, Stole the Gal to make Shortenin Bread.

Paid six dollars for the skillet, Paid six dollars for the led, Spent six months in jail eatin' Shortenin Bread.

This is completely irrelevant, but my twins sing, to the same tune;

Two little monkeys jumping on the bed, One fell off and bumped his head, Mummy called the doctor, the doctor said, 'No more monkeys jumping on the bed'.

I can't work out where they got that from, but is that cute or what?!!!

To Harold W. & Stoney,

Thanks a lot. Emily and Christopher will be so happy, and my daughter thanks you too as right now they only know how to sing the first two lines.

Here's another version...

SHORT'NIN' BREAD
Traditional Plantation Song

Two little babies, lying in bed
One was sick and the other 'most dead
Sent for the doctor and the doctor said
"Give those children some shortnin' bread."

Chorus:
Mama's little baby loves shortnin', shortnin'
Mama's little baby loves shortnin' bread
Mama's little baby loves shortnin', shortnin'
Mama's little baby loves shortnin' bread

Put on the skillet, slip on the lid
Mama's gonna bake a little short'nin' bread
This ain't all she's gonna do
Mama's gonna make a little coffee, too.

CHORUS

When those children, sick in bed
Heard that talk about short'nin' bread
Popped up well, to dance and sing
Skipped around and cut the pigeon wing.

CHORUS

^^

This is a great start. i did a search on this site but came up blank initially. i don't usually join threads, but this place is great! You have been wonderfully helpful and i am greatful to you all for you've done. i have some ideas for a blues version of this and will slip you guys a wave of it if i ever record it. i belong to a blues band from the Cleveland Ohio area called Blue Moon Express. Hope to have our website up soon. We're working on our first cd. Hope to have it ready by June or July 00. It's coming along great. Take care, all. Will log in on occasion just to see whats up.

From one of Garrison Keillor's "commercials" on Prairie Home Companions:

Mama's little baby loves rhubarb, rhubarb,
Beebop a Reebop, Rhubarb pie.

You might find more of it by hunting through the archives of his shows at Minnesota Public Radion (mpr.org)

Greetings!

The Mudcat thread Shortnin Bread Origins contains multiple versions of that song, including one that I adapted in 1998 or so for contemporary children's groups.

Underneath this thread's title there is a listing of other Mudcat threads on Shortnin' Bread. However, I prefer the thread that I hyperlinked because in additin to providing examples of Shortnin' Bread, 'Catters and Guests discuss the history & meaning of that song and some of its lyrics {for example 'the lid' probably means the 'cover' of the pot}.

Enjoy!

Then there are;

I'm so glad the old hog is dead
So I can get more shortnin'in my Bread
   (repeat both lines)

and

Two litle children lying in bed
One of them farted the other fell dead
Doctor come and the doctor said
That's what you get for farting in bed

It seems the kids love the last one.

By the way I hope you are singing this a la Skillet Lickers and not the dirge that I always heard as a kid sung by Paul Robeson. Took me years to find out that this was a good up tempo dance tune.

The Mississippi John Hurt version:

SHORTNIN' BREAD

Put on the skillet put on the lid
Mama gonna fix some shortnin' bread
Whole family loves shortnin' bread

Two little boys layin' in the bed
One turned over and the other one said
My mama cooks shortnin' bread

Shoo that chicken off that lid
'Fore he eat that shortnin' bread
Whole family love shortnin' bread

No 'one person' wrote the song, clu norwood. There are many versions, some of them have traceable origins, but many of them are anonymous...passed down from one person to another through the years.
