I am just wonering what search engines you use out there, I use copernic 99 or if I have a lot of time I use dogpile both are meta searchers that can search a number of sites.
copernic is also boolean so I can even search with fragments of songs but you have to buy the original prog.
dogpile is at www.dogpile.com

I usually use dogpile. If I am looking for images, I use Alta Vista and choose the search for graphics.

I start out with Yahoo; I like the format. Sometimes I will go on to dogpile or metecrawler.

I use hotbot.com It's best feature is an "exact phrase" search that seems to work better then most.

I read somewhere about a search engine called google that's supposed to be terrific. I tried it just now, and it seems pretty good.
For simple searches, I just put a few keywords in the address bar of my browser - that works with Netscape 4.0 and MSIE 5.0, but not with all earlier versions of these browsers.
I guess what I use most is an exact phrase search at hotbot. If that comes up with no resposnes, hotbot provides a link to Lycos and do an "advanced search." Lycos and Hotbot are based on the text found on the Web pages they scan, so it helps to have an exact phrase or a distinctive combination of words likely to be found only on the pages you want.

Google first for most searches. (Joe, Have you noticed that Netscape uses Google in some cases?)

A web of online dictionaries for definitions, rhyming words, ...

The CIA Factbook for world information.

MapQuest for driving directions etc. (This might not be of much use outside of North America.)

When looking for song titles or lyrics, Northern Light and Google seem to be the ones I use the most. I like Northern Light sometimes for that they organize material into folders of (usually) related topics.

Being a writer, I have to fact check, get a definition of a term, find a short bio, refresh my memory about an event, get a fact, things like that, several times a day. Life got a bit easier for me when I started using Google. It is now my search engine of choice. It has an excellent algorithm for choosing the most promising hits. I think that is one of the things I like most about it. Also it is amazingly fast.

In a rating of search engines, it also scored slightly higher than any of the others.

Google is the rockin'est search engine by far. Try GoogleScout (on the page w/your results) as well

A new and supposedly amazing engine is www.searchling.com

Subject: Zeppelin & Golden Gate Bridge
From: Joe Offer

I like to think I'm pretty good at Web searching, but I'm stumped tonight. Sme of you are really good, and I wonder if maybe you could find what I'm looking for - a photograph of a Zeppelin flying over the Golden Gate Bridge. The Nut Tree Restaurant gift shop in Vacaville, California, used to specialize in aviation memorabilia. They had a wonderful poster of this photograph. I meant to buy the poster, but the restaurant went out of business before I got around to it. Can anybody find me an online copy of this photograph?
I don't know which airship this was. I believe the photograph may have been taken before construction of the bridge was completed, and that there may not have been a roadway on the bridge at the time.
So, can anybody find the photo for me?
thanks.

Wow Andy!!! I bet that is it. I started searching under Google for Shenandoah, Akron, and Macon figuring that it had to be one of them......I came back to ask a question of Joe, but I bet you got it with that one. That's a beautiful shot.

Hey, I didn't discovered until today that somebody had found me an airship picture. The picture Andy linked to is wonderful, but not the one I'm thinking of. It could have been taken on the same day. As I recall, the Golden Gate Bridge was under construction at the time my picture was taken - my picture had a much closer view fo the bridge. In the picture Andy linked to, you can see one tower of the bridge, but the cables and roadbed aren't there yet.

I know I'm a bit late on the scene, but as a librarian I always start with Google, it has no peer for keyword searching as far as I'm concerend. For complex boolean searches I use Alta-Vista advanced, after that I work through most of the above, if I still have no joy I go and speak to our reference department about possible hard copy sources.

Incidentally Joe, do you have any idea of the period of the photo you're looking for? One of the Bond movies, "A View to a Kill", had scenes of an airship over Golden Gate. But it was mostly models. How early was the photo?

Hi, Greyeyes - rhw photo I'm looking for was abeautiful picture of a zeppelin over the Golden Gate Bridge. As I recall, the roadway of the bridge was not yet completed, so that dates it to the mid-1930's. The picture showed good detail of both the zeppelin and the bridge. It was available at the now-defunct Nut Tree Restaurant in Vacaville, halfway between Vacaville and San Francisco. The Nut Tree had a gift shop with all sorts of aviation memorabilia, and I believer the poster was published by the Nut Tree itself.
