I tried it just now, and it seems pretty good. For simple searches, I just put a few keywords in the address bar of my browser - that works with Netscape 4.0 and MSIE 5.0, but not with all earlier versions of these browsers. I guess what I use most is an exact phrase search at hotbot. If that comes up with no resposnes, hotbot provides a link to Lycos and do an "advanced search." Lycos and Hotbot are based on the text found on the Web pages they scan, so it helps to have an exact phrase or a distinctive combination of words likely to be found only on the pages you want. -Joe Offer- |

Life got a bit easier for me when I started using Google. It is now my search engine of choice. It has an excellent algorithm for choosing the most promising hits. I think that is one of the things I like most about it. Also it is amazingly fast. In a rating of search engines, it also scored slightly higher than any of the others. Sourdough

Sme of you are really good, and I wonder if maybe you could find what I'm looking for - a photograph of a Zeppelin flying over the Golden Gate Bridge. The Nut Tree Restaurant gift shop in Vacaville, California, used to specialize in aviation memorabilia. They had a wonderful poster of this photograph. I meant to buy the poster, but the restaurant went out of business before I got around to it. Can anybody find me an online copy of this photograph? I don't know which airship this was. I believe the photograph may have been taken before construction of the bridge was completed, and that there may not have been a roadway on the bridge at the time. The picture Andy linked to is wonderful, but not the one I'm thinking of. It could have been taken on the same day. As I recall, the Golden Gate Bridge was under construction at the time my picture was taken - my picture had a much closer view fo the bridge. For complex boolean searches I use Alta-Vista advanced, after that I work through most of the above, if I still have no joy I go and speak to our reference department about possible hard copy sources. |

As I recall, the roadway of the bridge was not yet completed, so that dates it to the mid-1930's. The picture showed good detail of both the zeppelin and the bridge. It was available at the now-defunct Nut Tree Restaurant in Vacaville, halfway between Vacaville and San Francisco. The Nut Tree had a gift shop with all sorts of aviation memorabilia, and I believer the poster was published by the Nut Tree itself. -Joe Offer- |
