Need some quick assistance! I am directing a one-act play entitled "The Rising of the Moon" by Lady Gregory (c. late 1800's). There is a ballad singer in the play that sings a song about Johnny Hart and another about Granuaile. I have the lyrics, but not the music. I could use sheet music or any kind of audio sample of these songs. I found the Granny Wale notes on the Digital Tradition that referred to the music, but didn't include it. Here are the lyrics:

As through the hills, I walked to view the hills and shamrock plain,
I stood awhile where nature smiles to view the rocks and streams,
On a matron fair I fixed my eyes beneath a fertile vale,
And she sang her song; it was on the wrong of poor old Granuaile.
Her head was bare, her hands and feet with iron bands were bound,
Her pensive strain and plaintive wail mingles with the evening gale,
And the song she and with mournful air, I am old Granuaile.
Her gown she wore was stained with gore...

Johnny Hart:
There was a rich farmer's daughter lived near the town of Ross,
She courted a Highland soldier; his name was Johnny Hart;
Says the mother to her daughter, "I'll go distracted mad, if you marry that Highland soldier dressed up in Highland plaid."

There's more than one tune called "Granuaile" (Graine Mhaol/ Grace O'Malley) The oldest is on my website with two songs to it in file Scarce Songs 1. www.erols.com/olsonw (For other early copies of the tune see the Irish tune index there). There's one in DT, but I haven't checked to see which tune it is.

Hi! Both songs, with music, are in Colm O Lochlainn's "Irish Street Ballads" , a book which is fairly widely available still. If you have problems I can try sending you a GIF - or fax, if possible.

Big Mick, I am in the states, so if you have the tune, I'd appreciate your help in accessing it (so would my actors!). Another response to my message told me that I could find the Granuaile tune (to the lyrics I posted) in Irish Street Ballads (compiled by Colm O'Lochlaim). I'm going to see if I can find it.

O Lochlainn's tune seems to have been taken from the Stanford-Petrie collcetion, #790, "Poor old Granua Weal". A close variant is "The Foggy Dew", #58 in Joyce's 'Old Irish Folk Music and Songs'. It's not very close to the original "Granuaile" tune.

Big Mick seems to have disappeared. I can't find the Johnny Hart song in 'Irish Street Ballads', here's the tune for the other, the words differ slightly from those you quoted, so you may have to make some slight adjustments.
