25 Jun 13 - 12:28 PM (#3530231) Subject: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Nancy King Heads up, Getaway folks! The 2013 Getaway is being planned, and the Program Committee -- me, Carly Gewirz (Mudcatter "Carly"), and longtime Getaway-goer Kathie Mack -- is ready for your input! This year's Getaway will be held October 4-7, at West River Conference Center on an inlet of the Chesapeake Bay. This is the same place we've been at for the last several years, and it's a beautiful spot. If you'd like more information about the Getaway, just put "Getaway" into the Mudcat filter box, set the time for 2-3 years, and you'll get more than anyone could reasonably read. For a more concise description, visit www.fsgw.org, scroll down a bit and click on "Getaway" in the left-hand column. Complete, up-to-date information -- including an application form -- will be available on the FSGW site very soon. We have a fine lineup of Special Guests this year: LARRY HANKS and DEBORAH ROBINS will be here from the West Coast with songs of cowboys and more; ED TRICKETT's gentle approach and varied repertoire are sure to please; the delightful duo of ANN MAYO MUIR and CHRISTINA MUIR will join us once again (Ann couldn't make it last year due to a family emergency in France, so we're trying again); JOHN ROBERTS, a Getaway favorite, will bring songs from both sides of the Pond; CASTLEBAY (FRED GOSBEE and JULIA LANE), whom we first met last year, will bring back their fine Celtic and New England music; the irrepressible MIKE AGRANOFF will no doubt provide more than a few laughs; and an old friend of the Getaway, MARK GILSTON, will be back with his dulcimer and squeezebox. All of these folks will be performing in mini-concerts and participating in lots of workshops. Now we're starting to put together a list of possible workshops. We've thought of quite a few, and we're ready for your suggestions. One of the great things about the Getaway is that we really do try to tailor the program to the interests of those attending, but we can't do that until we know who's coming and what they'd like to do. So -- please tell us if you'll be there, and what you'd like to see on the program. Are there workshops you'd like to lead, co-lead, or attend? Workshops you'd like to see repeated (or not)? We're open to all suggestions, and although not all of them will end up on the final list (we have only 2 days, after all, so please don't assume that just because something is discussed here, it will necessarily make the final cut), we do promise to consider all ideas. You can post them to this thread, or PM Carly or me. Just so things don't get out of hand, it would be helpful if this thread were reserved for program suggestions. Other Getaway topics should be posted elsewhere. Thanks! The Getaway is all about participation, so start participating now! Nancy |

26 Jun 13 - 11:24 AM (#3530590) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Nancy King Looking forward to seeing you, Andrew and Carole! Any thoughts on workshops you'd like to lead? Dick, we'll have to see about that. We'd love to do it, but it takes just the right leader, and since Jonathan's no longer with us, it's harder. We did it a few years ago with Pete the Spy and Ken Schatz, and it went pretty well. We'll take a look when we have more knowledge of who's coming. Keep the ideas coming, folks! |
26 Jun 13 - 02:46 PM (#3530671) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: ranger1 Since a lot of my friends have become new parent in the last couple of years, how about a lullaby workshop? And no, I don't want to lead it. |
26 Jun 13 - 06:00 PM (#3530732) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Amos Bravo, Andrew and Carole! It's been too long! Nancy--your humble servant, songs on demand. A |
27 Jun 13 - 07:27 AM (#3530884) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: GUEST,Dani Not sure if this was an actual workshop or just a waterside caper, but I seem to remember something about Songs From A Hat, which was great fun. |

28 Jun 13 - 10:05 AM (#3531285) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Amos Well, it only goes up and comes down...never mind. I'd like to see a Bluegrass workshop. A |
28 Jun 13 - 01:39 PM (#3531381) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Ron Davies I'd love to see--and hear, of course-- an Amos miniconcert. I still can't forget those Steve Cormier songs you did--and Vincent Black Lightning. Etc. etc. The list goes on and on. Also, that workshop--or was it a miniconcert?-- with families doing close harmony last year was just stunning. Anything with close harmonies. I don't know how practical that would be as a workshop--people would have to be prepared. I'd always like a C&W workshop. But it would need a real good leader, like Nan, TJ or Chance. |
28 Jun 13 - 10:15 PM (#3531535) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Janie What Ron said.... And in these troubled times....how about songs about social justice that include latter day songs "in the tradition" |

06 Aug 13 - 11:26 PM (#3546374) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Big Mick This is getting a bit ridiculous! There is no where I would rather be, but I have an Ireland tour in October as well as other gigs. It just doesn't look in the cards folks. It is killing me not to see my friends. I am going to have to set up a house concert tour or something. I hate thinking of waiting another year! All the best, Mick |

11 Aug 13 - 09:27 AM (#3547866) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Nancy King We haven't finalized the program yet, and so would like to keep things fairly close to the vest a little while longer. We ended up with many more great workshop ideas than we actually have time for, and it's awkward to announce something and then have to retract it. We'll be working on the schedule grid in a week or so, and then, after tweaking it for a while to make sure we don't have people scheduled in two places at once, will put it on line, probably in early September. Whatever ends up on the actual schedule, rest assured it will be great! Please get your registration in soon! Bring your kids (or grandkids)! Be prepared for a super weekend! |
11 Aug 13 - 09:07 PM (#3548051) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Gorgeous Gary I was concerned for a bit that a major work commitment would keep me away from the Getaway, but it looks like I got a mostly lucky break and will be there to torment y'all anyhow. The only bummer is I might not get there 'til late Friday because of said work commitment. -- Gary |
28 Aug 13 - 03:46 AM (#3553602) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Genie I second Amos's plug for a bluegrass workshop. |
28 Aug 13 - 11:58 AM (#3553787) Subject: RE: Planning for 2013 Getaway From: Nancy King Bluegrass Jam is on the schedule, Genie. We're finalizing the schedule grid now, and will be writing to workshop leaders this week, and after allowing a reasonable time for any necessary changes -- which we hope not to have to make! -- will post a link for the schedule for all to see. Stay tuned! |
